Having personally seen NYCB tutus up close and on stage I would have to disagree and say they are stunning. There are different styles of tutus and they are all equally beautiful.

+J Webb I'm interested to know, with which comment are you disagreeing? I agree about the NYCB costumes being stunning (as is true, to varying degrees, of really well designed and made ballet costumes in numerous companies, though NYCB, with the heritage it has, is one of the greatest in that department).

This is lovely! And I’m not sure if this was pointed out, but the costumes were designed by Barbara Kiska in 1967. A Russian immigrant who set up shop in the USA. She one anAcademy award for her designs but in my mind she’s best known for her association with New York City, Balet and her fellow Russian George Balanchine. One of her lasting influences was designing the “Powderpuff tutu “

I remember quite a few years ago, PBS broadcast the Paris Opera Ballet dancing JEWELS. Of course, their dancers are some of the greatest, but I was a bit disturbed by the costumes, which, I believe, had been newly designed by maybe Christian LaCroix. The ones for RUBIES, in particular, struck me as so wrong. The skirts were kind of frou-frou-fluffy looking, as if the theme were an old fashioned, doily-ish Valentine; clearly so wrong for the music and dynamic of RUBIES.

Same. I have the DVD of that performance and the Rubies costume is just a no-no. I especially hated the pink colour peeking out from under the skirts. I love that there's gold under the Royal Ballet costumes.

Interesting. I would have thought in a Ballet like Jewels, the Balanchine Trust would have had some control over whether a company could recostume. This would be like doing Western Symphony in evening gowns and tuxedos

@@minissa2009 I agree. I thought that the costumes were proscribed for each ballet to be the same, no matter what company dances it.

I wish the Royal had gone their own way with the Diamonds tutus. The Bolshoi did and the Paris Opera Ballet also did, to great success. Their costumes for Diamonds are absolutely ravishing. Barbara Karinska may have been a great ballet costume designer but the execution of her Diamonds tutus is living proof that no one in the NYCB costume shop ever learned how to cut a tutu.

These costumes are based on the New York City Ballet originals made by Karinksa, right? (See the book COSTUMES BY KARINKSA by Toni Bentley, I'm sure these are the origs.)
