Count Fleet was every bit as dominant in his 3rd yr as was Secretariat. He was the 6th Triple Crown winner, taking the Derby by 3, Preakness by 8 and Belmont by 25 lengths. In between the Preakness & Belmont, he also won the Withers Stakes by 5 lengths.

And some of us remember that Citation was basically invincible, and easily dominating four-year olds, as a young three year old BEFORE the Derby, and didn't even race at all at four in 1949 due to injury/illness. When he came back in 1950, he wasn't at the condition he had been in before, and was only back to cross the million mark in earnings.

This excellent 1988 documentary chronicles every triple crown race, for each winner, from Sir Barton (1919: the first) to Affirmed (1978). What makes it such an important historical production is the contemporaneous footage of Secretariat and Seattle Slew: the horses are standing near narrator Jim McKay as he begins their respective segments! The great horse Alydar also appears with McKay when he begins the segment that focuses on triple crown winner Affirmed, which is a touching and beautiful moment given the terrible and tragic circumstances involving Alydar that occurred two years later. Other amazing horses who were not triple crown winners (e.g., Seabiscuit) also appear in this documentary. This video is well worth watching for all horse racing fans and historians.

Recency bias, and the state of racing at the time really clouds this argument. Man 'O War never raced the TC, but he destroyed Sir Barton. Considering the steel shoes, slower tracks, and racing multiple times a week, imo, the mighty Man 'O War stands alone. Though doubtless Secretariat, the other "Big Red" was an amazing race horse. Seattle Slew also gets slept on, as does Count Fleet and Whirlaway.

Steve Veasey Probably the best discussion I've seen of the technical issues involved in the change of Secretariat's official Preakness time has been Victor Mather's June 21, 2012 column for The New York Times, "It’s Secretariat, Faster Today Than in 1973." Your suggestion would not work for races recorded on film in pre-videotape days. Videotape was relatively new in '73. Its timing is perfectly uniform at 29.97 frames per second. The suggestion is additionally unnecessary in any race in which hand-held and electronic timers are in close agreement and backing each other up. But if an important record were in question again, and there was such a glaring discrepancy between the electronic timer and various human clockers, I dare say the authorities would again turn to videotape analysis-- and in a much more timely (truly, no pun intended) manner, now that the unvarying nature of videotape is understand by racing authorities. It was known from immediately after the '73 Preakness something was screwed up, because the two Racing Form clockers had Secretariat *so* much faster (1:53 2/5) than the electronic timer (1:55). CBS Sports videotape a few days later showed Sec going faster than Canonero II. The stewards' decision to go with Pimlico's official and very poorly positioned hand-held clocker (1:54 2/5) was a compromise allowed by the rules of the time. I believe the Racing Form never did accept the 1:54 2/5, either using their own faster time, or putting an asterisk by the official time. The change by the MD Racing Commission was a matter of their rules catching up to modern technology.

In the span of that time he won 27 of 29 starts, and although his winning streak is surpassed it remains arguably the greatest of all time. During that time he won at every distance, at 10 different tracks, in 7 different states, traveling by dusty trucks and sweltering trains. We won almost all of his races held back by 66 lengths, set 4 track records, 1 world record, swept the triple crown by 17 lengths, beat the best stayers and sprinters in the country, beat 4 year olds before he even ran in the triple crown. He often raced days after winning a different race. His later seasons often tarnish his nearly perfect record. He was injured from running so much that he was off for a year. Until about 6 months ago I lived just around the corner from Churchill Downs. Many interesting local relics still exist in one form or another if you know where to to look...the"Whirlaway Inn" on 4th St., and the home on Central and 3rd of Roscoe "The Goose", jockey who rode Donerail, a 91-1 logshot to win the Derby in 1913 . This story is well-known but it turns out that Roscoe's older brother Carl rode a filly named Cream to victory in the Oaks, too. It seems that his mother and brother lived at the corner house as well. Kurtsinger rode the Admiral like they'd been created as brothers for one another. So did Red "Cougar" Pollard, Seabiscuit's jock...although he was in traction, barely able to move, at the time of the famous match race race. His dear friend and excellent jockey George Woolf was able to fill in, and Pollard gave him the key to breaking War Admiral's iron heart. Let both horses run eye-to-eye for a bit---a few seconds, a quarter of a minute---and after a while WA would *definitely* crack and fall back. The 'Biscuit was naughty and relished taking the spice out of all owner Charles Howard's horses, which was becoming a problem! However, he hardly needed instruction as it was child's play to run up to The Big Horse and pop out his micky. Dr. Riddle was heartbroken as he led his Mighty Atom off the track. But had he known, War Admiral would send us horses from the female line: Swaps and Seattle Slew (TCW '77). Affirmed and Alysheba both had WA in their lines, which for race lovers is an interesting bit of trivia. WA shows up in American Pharoah's pedigree 15 times.

Your dad was correct!! Seabiscuit was never bred to a good racing mare so he had no great offspring! His owner loved him and never sought out mares for him!! Incidentally, there's something a lot of people don't remember about the War Admiral and Seabiscuit race/rivalry. For all the talk of Seabiscuit being "the common man's horse", the facts of the pedigree lay out a different reality: War Admiral was his step-uncle. And if War Admiral was his step-uncle, that means that his grandsire was...you know who. Seabiscuit's "interests", owner and trainer, were more common men, yes, and they certainly weren't Eastern Establishment. But make no mistake: Seabiscuit's blood was just as royal as The Admiral's, and they both did their immortal family proud in different ways.

Ain't no horse gonna beat Secretariat's Belmont record under two minutes 1.59 FLAT
@jm16575 ай бұрын
@@bacatherineczekaj6456 are you referring to the fact that during his Belmont Stakes, Secretariat ran 1.25 miles in 1:59 flat - which he did.? That bested his fantastic Kentucky Derby finish time of 1:59 and 2/5.

@JoeReynolds-iw1sn 1 other horse has won the Derby in under 2 minutes: Monarchos, in 2001. Although Sham was runner-up to Big Red in the Derby, he also ran it in under 2 mins.

California chrome didn’t even win the triple crown. He holds no records. The best horse not to win the triple crown is spectacular bid. He holds the world record for mile and a quarter 1:574/5. Chrome couldn’t touch that.

Notice that Alydar is pointed out as would-have-been Triple Crown winner if he was not there at same time as Affirmed. There was 10-year gap already after Affirmed's Triple Crown, and it wasn't won again until June of this year.

I've read that Whirlaway's trainers, the Joneses, and his rider, Arcaro, did not think of Whirlaway as in the same class as Man o' War or Citation. I gather that they regarded him as useful, but not great. Given his brilliant performances in the classic races, I find this point of view hard to understand.
@marysueeasteregg9 жыл бұрын
tubeyhamster Don't know how familiar you are with Whirlaway's overall record, but -- HIs career record was 60:32-15-9, a much less impressive winning percentage than Man o'War's one loss in 21 starts, or Citation's 2 losses in 29 starts before he was injured sometime between the end of his 3-yr-old year and what would have been his 4-yr-old campaign. (I am discounting here Citation's admittedly much poorer record at 6 and 7, when he came back to the track after sitting out his 4-yr-old year.) But at 2, at 3 and at 4, Whirlaway was winning only 45 to 65 percent of his starts each year. He was heavily campaigned all 3 of those years, with 58 starts. Could his poorer record have due to overracing rather than less talent? Maybe. But there is also the issue he was an exceptionally difficult horse to ride, with a habit of heading so far to the outside rail that the photo finish camera sometimes had difficulty picking him up. Whirlaway was rated 26th of 20th C. American racers by a 1999 Blood-Horse panel. When you think about the tens (or hundreds?) of thousands of horses who would have run in those hundred years, that's actually a very high ranking. But the consensus opinion seems to be that he was a terrific but erratic runner. I'm not suggesting he was an underserving TC winner, just that I can easily see why he's not ranked as high as some other horses, Triple Crown winners or not. The TC races are only one part of a horse's career.

The greatest horse of all times is Big Red. Nick name of Man o War and Secretariat. Man o War: was a better stud, 28 ft stride of 110 degrees, 1/2 hand taller. 21 races with 20 wins, a majestic horse just look at the conformance visible in his statue in Lexington. 2017 was his 100 year anaversary. I love Secretariat ❤️ but see a greatness in Man o War. Too bad he didnt run in all 3 races of the triple crown he would be on this documentary.

I have been slow on the uptake on this information but now that it did dawn on me, isn't Seattle Slew's bump into other horses a violation? Shouldn't he have been disqualified? He did that more than once during his racing career and was called a "Bully". Secretariat won, but was disqualified from the Champagne Stakes for bumping another horse. This seems a bit unfair. I know someone out there will call me "dense" for not understanding this one. But "bumping" should be a disqualification. Maybe they pick and choose who gets the violation???

Did Zenyatta ever run for the triple crown? I thought all good horses will run the races at Kentucky Derby, the Preakness, and Belmont Stakes as a 3 years old.

She didn’t make her first start until late in her 3yo year. She was so big that her trainer let her take the extra time to finish growing.
