Moto Guzzi V7 III Stone - Reviewed on Italian roads

Here's another of my Italian reviews. This time I looked at the base model of Moto Guzzi V7 - the stone. The V7 is the best selling range of the Moto Guzzi so I was very curious how this bike feels.
As you will see it could be very good choice for beginners, possibly as the first motorcycle.

Had a 2017 Yamaha XSR900, 2018 Aprilia Tuono Factory, and now this. Trust me.. Speed isn't everything. I've hit 170mph on the Tuono but sometimes simplicity makes you appreciate riding in a much better way than technology. Will this bike make your feel like your arms are being ripped off the sockets? No, but I smile more and more each day riding this daily. I love my V7 III Stone.

Giant fuel tank, top horsepower at 6200rpm, top torque at 4900rpm with a 6 speed transmission. Excellent fuel economy. My friend rode 540 km on secondary roads at low rpm from Pecs, Hungary to Siofok- Budapest-Szeged and back to Pecs. The total distance was 590 km, he needed to buy fuel about 50 km from Pecs on the way back. If you are looking for a standard, simple, low weight bike that is EASY to ride every day? Here it is...

Yeah the V7 III lost something from the V7 ii which produces max torque down at 2800rpm; max power still at 6250rpm but doesn't drop off as sharply as the V7 III, so is can continue to pull up to around 7200rpm. Althuogh they both rev freely, the V7ii doesn't appreciate being maxed out like a japanese sports bike, its power characteristic is down low, sweet spot 3500-4500., open up from there and you have 3000 revs of power band to enjoy. Cost cutting with the V7 III methinks and to meet Euro4. Very good at taking bends and not a beginners bike by any means, it's not happiest in slow town traffic with its wide turning circle and the single plate clutch is not best for fine control; our reviewer was not giving it the beans and was riding like a newbie. For comparison a Tigger 800 has nearly double the horse but you have to work the gear box to find them, consequently the V7 is noticeably quicker on back roads with twisty bends, the Tiger constantly struggling to juggle the gear box whilst the V7 just steams through them, handling is rather better too. To get it to stick to the road though, those Pirelli have to go in the bin.

@@jeffslade1892 I feel easy to ride a lot of motos that offers quite more in luggage and space, like cb500x, 790 adventure, even the v85... if this moto got oversized would be a win. But anyone with a trail bike wouldn't change for this "toy" because... where is the space for passenger plus luggage here? so its more a solo rider moto, or a daily trip rider I love the bike but thinking in the change... i loose utility

I own this exact bike, this exact color. It's a dream. Completely underrated. Enough power that feels like you're accessing the entire bike, and not cracking the throttle 1 millimeter and you're going 100mph. It's different in a completely beautiful way. Yeah, it's got plastic here and there, but pssssssh, whatever, you never notice. I also figured out that you can know what gear you're in when you set your dash to TRIP as opposed to the ODOMETER. Love this thing. You can't go wrong with it.

Would this bike be able to handle two full sized adults on a lazy day trip or weekend trip? Also what options or links are there that you can recommend to improve engine performance on this bike?

@@shmac96 two-up, yes. Been there, do that. Guzzi always design their bikes for sensible two-up, not some elevated perch requiring a step ladder to board. More day trip than touring. Unless you're prepared to throw a lot of money at it altering the engine, the performance is more-or-less fixed. Buy a bigger Guzzi?

Wonderful geography and a very nice basic motorcycle which can give pure joy.One point is yes it may be an easy and forgiving bike but your statements underrate the bike a bit yes it may not have a huge engine ( which is not necessary according to my limited experience of 20 years on bikes ) and may not be too fast but it's a seriously built machine which an experienced biker can do a world round trip without a single complaint.Yes and the beginners are also very lucky to have an access to a medium capacity refined Guzzi in the same price range as the japanese bikes in my twenties owning a Guzzi like that was a dream only lucky kids and thank you for your review of the machine.

Have been riding motorcycles for over 50 years--Suzuki, Zundapp, Moto Morini, Ducati, Triumph, BSA, Indian, BMW, Laverda, Cagiva, Kawasaki. I now have a 1989 Moto Guzzi Mille GT that carried me over 120 miles at highway speed on one cylinder when a plug wire crapped out. I also have a 2013 Moto Guzzi V7 that I absolutely love. Plenty of power for a guy my age, relatively light weight, sharp brakes, easy to maintain (especially since I am not sharp on mechanical issues). At 69, this should be my last bike. The problem with the brakes (9:25) is not the Bremos but the awful Pirelli tyres. Since fitting Avon Roadrider I've not seen the ABS light up because the tyres now grip the road. The cornering is also transformed from just 'stable' to 'cat on rails', no more side-stepping.

Like the review; countryside was great. I too am taller and heavier and was encouraged by your comments about being relaxed and comfortable. I have had some reservations about fitting comfortably on a Moto Guzzi bike. Looks like its going to work. Someone else asked about your weight; maybe think about that, when you review, as so many other people giving motorcycle reviews are smaller and larger people don't get a sense from their perspective. I would be included in the new rider group.

Awesome video man very informative. I just purchased the V7 carbon Edition haven't pick it up yet. Since the virus has laid me off I've been reading the owners manual and service and service manual I almost got it backwards and forwards. Question for you you said there's a USB port I never knew that is it on all models or did I just miss hear you.

Good review, and it is a good beginner bike, however it does not have to be, I have a big bike and I’am thinking about down sizing, the bike is a classic in the 60,s and 70’s this is the size bikes we were riding, but with the advent of bigger and faster we got away from simple machines, like the triumphs, BSA, guzzi’s, so in that sense for me it is not a beginner’s bike, but a bike I can just ride!!

Very nice review! I have the same motorcycle and is my first bike. I agree with all the statements that you said about this moto, it’s note for going fast but is easy to ride, it forgives you a lot of errors..anyway if you put some Agostini pipes the sound will be much more Guzzi and also the torque will improve and will be available even at lower ranges ;-)

@@JFMotorcycles Would you kindly confirm or deny that the Agostinis would increase the power, and by how much (in horses), please? Thanks for any information, because I was told by the sales mechanic at my MG dealership that the cost of changing the pipes would be astronomical but that the increase in power wouldn't even be noticeable. Thank you!! P.S. That was a fair and succinct review! I love my MG, I've got the V7 Classic .. it's an identical m.c. but with gorgeous old-school styling. TBH, I think this is the perfect old lady's motorcycle if you've been riding solidly for a lot of years (since I turned 17yo) and want something that handles really well in all conditions and will keep you riding well into your 60's. I say this because the comfort level is definitely there, and even though I'm a tall 5'10" I really like the riding position. I'm over wanting the fastest machine on the road, and this m.c. is not that kind of bike. I still do some serious kms on solo rides (1400-1800kms in a weekend) and this m.c. is perfect for me due to its reliability, comfort, ease of handling, simplicity for doing all of my own maintenance and cleaning/polishing, etc etc. It's also a respectably quiet machine - I like to be able to think when I ride! But I'm NOT saying that only old ducks like myself should get to enjoy the fine Italian engineering of this great m.c!! In fact it would appeal to a very wide range of m.c. enthusiasts. Personally, I really like having a m.c. that looks like a real beast but is actually a dream to ride : )

I've just traded in my bonny for one of these . A totally better bike . It put the passion , feel and fun back into my ride . The triumphs a refined ride and you have that look . For me that's where it ends . The guzzi is so much more it's chalk and cheese . What a great bike , fantastic , period

How about the torque that gives the engine out.. Do you feel it I mean when you open the throttle does your whole bike shake clockwise? Another think that I have in mind is that the cylinders become hot... Does your leg feel it?

@Bo Libor Kroupa Yes, these days all bikes are good, only matter of preference and ergonomics. Guzzi V7 may be small for you. Because of the cylinder heads you will need to move quite far back on the seat. It's a little strange position, I had to lean forward to reach handlebars but my feet were also a bit forward because I had to move my ass back. You can see that on this video as well, maybe it's just something to get used to. Strangely I didn't want Triumph Bonnevile T120 any more after seeing it in person - I felt on it like I'm an old fart, too retro for me :D But I really liked Triumph Speed Twin - it looks great and it's also a bit taller. The most comfortable bikes for me were Kawasaki Z900RS (not Cafe) and Triumph Speed Twin. Among these three I was mainly choosing in the end: Z900RS, Z900RS Cafe, Speed Twin.

hi I have a 125cc but I'm thinking changed for something with more cc. I use the motorcycle every day, to go work and some rides with and without passenger. The style that I like the most is classic/retro and the models I like are the Triumph Street Scrambler and the Guzzi V7 III. I tested the V7 II last weekend and it pleased me a lot, the transmission being by shaft (which means that it does not need to stretch and lubricate the chain from time to time) for me is a strong point, as have an air cooled engine, which I think reduces maintenance costs compared to Triumph. I have not tried the Street Scrambler yet, but I'll wait for the opportunity. I also have the problem of being 190 cm, in your opinion do you think I would feel more comfortable in V7 than in Street Scrambler?

@@pookiewookie7679 I've a Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 since March 2019, now have almost 20 000 km. And meets all my requirements. The Interceptor 650 has a low price compared with the Guzzi V7 and triumph street scrambler, and for me that makes some difference.

@@isaac.oliveira great choice👍🏼 I have a 125 myself, and I'm thinking what to get next. Here in Denmark taxes on bikes are quite high so you pay almost double than in Germany for example. I'm also thinking about Royal Enfield maybe the Cont. GT or like yours. Or maybe just a Benelli bn 251 or Leoncino 500. But 251 is not much more than my 125 lol. My favs are tge r9t or Speed Twin but they are way too expensive and probably too powerful for what I need anyway.

I just did a camping tour of the Lake District from Berkshire (285 miles each way and 100 miles around the Lakes) on my Moto Guzzi V7 I Special. The things I like - retro looks, general easy of use, low seat height, shaft drive, loads of torque, large fuel tank (21 lt, giving a range of approximately 240 miles). Things I don't like - vibrations, my fingers, arms and shoulders were sore and stiff every couple of hours, same with my butt and lower back, wind buffeting on my chest even though I had a Dart windshield, stiff rear suspension, I could feel every bump. Wonder if the V7 iii is much better? I wish Moto Guzzi came out with a touring version of the V7 designed with long distance touring comfort in mind.. maybe a retro modern version. And no I am not a fan of large adventure tourers, the seat is too high and they are darn heavy!

Hi Luciano, I actually felt more comfy and better on V7. I think 190 cm could surprisingly work, but you have to really try and think for yourself. No doubts this bike is meant for smaller riders but I felt nice on it with my 193 cm.

I watched this particular review of yours several times. The part about who is this moto for, that you mentioned "those that are coming back to motorcycles after 30 or 40 years" made me laugh! But in part it was me, that I am coming back after 15+ years break. And last 2.5 years I am driving a scooter, so I am the perfect buyer hahaha. In truth I loved this model's classic looks, and while reason was prompting me to go for Honda NC 750 instead, I followed my heart and bought this one, the V7 III special to be accurate! with a tall rider like you would a passenger go confortable too? or the seat gets to small, i am tall rider too and this is also one of the many problems of being a tall rider wanting a classic style bike

I believe the V7ii was tuned a little to deliver 50bhp and the v7 originlal had 48bhp this bike was given an overdrive 6th gear I don't think the last 2 examples had 6th but had 5 gears! so the 6th and perhaps a few tweaks here and there like lighter engine internals and different mapping perhaps account for the extra 2bhp but it is a lovely bike! ride safe!

The 2016 V7II was the first V7 with a six speed. The 2017 and 2018 V7III models get their additional hp primarily from a cylinder head redesign; the V7II and prior have what is called a Heron-head design, while the V7III has a hemispherical cylinder head. I think the main reason for the change was Euro 4 emissions compliance, but the hemi head is also supposed to flow more volume in higher RPM ranges, giving a slight performance improvement. Mine isn't broken in yet, so I haven't been able to try it's higher rpm performance. I didn't buy mine to go fast, but to have something beautiful, fun, and relatively practical, and it does all of those very well.

@@aaron.hudacky - yeah, the V7 II gets its maximum torque a lot lower down, at 2800rpm (V7 III is up at 4900). So one trick for an overtake is to change up then open the throttle. Regarding the top end, the V7 III (which I have tested) maxes out around 6800 shortly after peak power at 6200, whereas the V7 II keeps going to around 7200 after peak power also at 6200. The V7 II is certainly very willing at the top end and will hit the rev limiter, whereas the V7 III is like hitting a brick wall when it runs out of steam. Elsewhere we see the V7 II spec at 48bhp with 9.6 compression ratio, in several places online. Whereas the manual for mine states 10.4 compression but fails to give any power figures whatsoever. This may be a regional variation (to perhaps meet emission regs). And then here, they reckon the V7 II has 55bhp - bsd.uk.com/news/ecu-remap/moto-guzzi-v7-classic-ecu-remap-to-sort-out-a-wheezy-engine-starved-of-fuel-2/ It's no crotch rocket but no slouch neither, it certainly has the acceleration equal to an 1800cc Goldwing.

I don't understand why people say "it's a good beginners Bike" if you ride a motorcycle, regardless of the size of the cc it dont make you a beginner or a professional rider, if you ride the v7 slow round a hair pin bent, you might be a beginner rider, and if you go fast round a hair pin bent you might be a professional rider, it's not the bike, it's the rider .

100 HP would be ridiculous on this bike. It would not be the same bike. I would need stronger components, bigger wheels and tires, better brakes, etc to handle 100 HP and then it wouldn't be the same bike.

will M , I agree that stopping the same weight bike from the same speed is the same. The difference is that you will be accelerating to 70 quicker which might mean having to brake quicker. Also, with 100 HP there is a higher likelihood that you will be riding faster than 70. More braking doesnt help if you are exceeding the traction of the tires.

Dave would a bike that looks like this with better components be a bad thing though? I don’t think it would be. Low spec and a high spec versions would be cool in my book. Triumph does this every year and they do it extremely well. The enthusiasts could still have the option to buy the low/normal spec if they wish. Just my opinion, just spit ballin ideas/thoughts

Jool , options and choice is always a good thing. Offer a V11 that looks like the V7 with upgraded components and power. But, like I said, it would be a different bike. I originally thought going from an FZ07 to the V7 would be different but except for the wheelie capability of the FZ07 I found the bikes to be very similar. The styling, and fit and finish of the V7 blows away the FZ07.

Dave Yea it would look a lil different but as long as it wouldn’t stray too far off in looks I’m fine with it. The griso is ok, but it just doesn’t grab me as much as the V7s do visually. interesting, the only reason i never got into the FZ07/9 was exactly that - the fit and finish. I dont need a bike for commuting or any reason really. Just for fun. They’re fun bikes no doubt but always wanted something less “plasticy”? I’m not saying its bad either. Currently considering the Kawasaki Z900RS. Just a simple around town bike that wont get too boring.

At just over the magic 35kW, it requires a full "A" licence. It is not a beginner's bike. A restricted "A2" version is available, but even that is not a beginner's bike, they start at "A1" level 11kW (125cc). The 1967 Guzzi V7 was hailed as the world's first superbike, only rivalled a little later by the Norton Commando; hardly a beginner's bike then. The modern V7 is in some ways like the riding the old 750 Commando, but with brakes.

Are you serions? Do you ever see a beginer bike with 52 HP? I ride 250's...they have lots of speed and torque and easy to ride than these big bold expensive bikes that eat tires and kit chain. However, this V7 iii is a jewelry that you can't know its value. Sorry to tell you that, but your review is👎👎👎👊

Lol, lots of beginner bikes have way more than 52 HP these days. I started on a Honda Nighthawk 750 which is 64 HP, IIRC.
