Juan Gabriel was a MONSTER. During his prime he was doing shows that lasted 4-6 hours consistently. He chose passionate singing over technique a lot, because most of his songs came from an emotional place in him. He wrote over 1000 songs, and helped so many other artists’ career take off by writing specifically for them. He’s without a doubt the greatest music artist in the whole spanish speaking world. He’s a legend, and has SOO many other good songs. I recommend “amor eterno” which is a song he wrote for his mother when she passed away in a traffic accident. Thanks for giving Juan Gabriel a shot !

Yes! I wanna nerd out for a moment so I'm going to hijack this comment since its at the top: This specific concert was performed in 1990 at a theatre called Bellas Artes in Mexico. Before his performance, things like operas and plays were held there and many people were opposed to the idea of having Juan Gabriel hold a concert there; people thought it was innapropriate and that the location was too prestigious for something like a concert. The people responsble for giving Juan the green light were harassed and sent thousands of letters insulting them, Juan Gabriel faced a bunch of backlash and homophobic insults too. SO the people that gave permission for the concert to happen, reassured the snotty community that all the revenue would go to the symphony but they werent going to cancel it, this was in hopes of getting them to calm down. Funnily enough, the controversy only added to the expectations for the concert, not only did they sell all the tickets, the tickets were being re-sold for 100s of millions of pesos. Even the president of Mexico attended (amongst other high profile people). In the end, we were left with a historical and iconic concert that will outlive generations to come. Juan Gabriel said: "Tonight I am happy and I would like to express my wish: that all popular artists have the opportunity to come here because this place was built with money from the people. And let popular composers be given a place here because in their time Bach, Beethoven and Mozart were also popular and had difficulties. Not that I'm comparing myself to them. I've been told by some that this is their place and not mine. I want to confide in you my greatest wish: that there are opportunities for all unknown people who are out there, and that they do well, much better than me who had no education, and who was alone out there looking for a way to unfold and improve myself too." In one night, he helped build a bridge amongst various social classes within the nation. The first ever concert held in Palacio de las Bellas Artes (the one in the video you're watching) lasted 4 days, each had 3 hours. There were a bunch of standing ovations, some of which lasted up to 15 minutes. Juan Gabriel took 24 kids that were educated in a hostel he founded to the concert too. He returned 2 more times in his lifetime. In total, 7 concerts have been held in this location.

i love that you mentioned the fact that his voice sounds a little raspy at some point, and it's because he sang live the entire concert and when he was singing this particular song, he already performed like 10 or more songs prior. He NEVER EVER used autotune or playback or any of those things other artists use when they sing and dance at the same time. and what makes juan gabriel fantastic and THE GOAT is the fact that he used to sing and dance LIVE for 2 or 3 hours straight! (He once broke a record here in mexico because he performed almost 7 HOURS STRAIGHT!) that's why he always started the show with a beautiful voice and by the end, he was almost voiceless.
