If commercials from blood-sucking companies is what comforts us, then what does that say about American culture? Sadly, when you ask people to define it they'll start listing brands, products etc... Ford, Chevy, Dodge. None of these things make a culture.

Uncle Buck one of the best movies ever. I miss John Candy so much. One of the true comedians we’ve ever had. My favorite scene of that movie is when he scared the boyfriend so much he ran out of the house. The other classic scene from that movie is the giant pancake which had to be turned over with a shovel. 🥞

I turned off the TV set in 1991. The 80's were it. I jumped on to KZbin from time to time and caught wind of doing movie torrents, but I didn't miss much. In fact, the annoyance of today's ads actually pissed me off to where I had adblock and refused any commercials. I don't really recall the 90's much unless a backhanded reference was made to it.

I was 13 years old back in the year 1989. I remember all of these old T.V. commercials. The 1980s was both a good and bad time for me. As a kid who was growing up in New York City after the crack explosion, it wasn't that great of a childhood, especially in my neighborhood. But in the sense of what I liked, like certain T.V. series, animated cartoons, music, comics, video games, etc., yeah, it was a really fun time.

I was 11 in 89 and lived in the Ozarks. We were so poor that the electric wouldn't be paid half the time and I had to pack water from a spring 200 yards from the house because the well pump ran off electricity. I spent the summer of 88 bare foot because there wasn't any money for shoes. Later that year oct 89 we moved to Tulsa and my life improved. That was the first time I ever saw cable TV. Alot of people have fond memories of the 80s, I mostly remember being dirty poor and hungry.

I actually won that isle of dreams contest. Well at least I was picked as one of the diggers. I was too young so I had to have my Mom do it in my stead. She dug up the worst prize you could get which were New Kids on the Block concert tickets. There were front row center so I sold them to a girl friend of mine for a decent amount but we missed out on some cool prizes. There were 104 of us and 10 won cruises which put you in the running for big prizes like cars and the million bucks. One guy even dug up some keys that went to a beach house which they won.

Man. 1989 was a hard year for us. Mom found out dad was having an affair, lost our house, Hurricane Hugo had made land fall on us, in and out of different family homes where we were not welcome. To this day my dad is about as responsible as a four year old. He just didn't believe in paying bills but he did believe in getting women that could pay his way . I'm really thankful for my mom. It was the saddest I ever felt as a kid. Things was rough. These commercials really take me back to a time when a 6 year boy had to hold back tears and stay strong in a time of turmoil.
