Was stationed in Rheindahlen between 1964.. 1966.... Was the commanding officers driver. Loved it there, especially a place called "ticks" at the shopping centre where we'd spend many, many evenings enjoying good company and food! I really loved the Land rover and lots of drives everywhere into Holland sometimes on a recce.... cycling along the Rhine for 5 days. Beautiful! Wonderful memories that this video has brought back. Thankyou!

I loved JHQ, it was the best posting of my career 96-99. The Big Naafi, the Royal, the Marly, OASE, Aafes PX, the bowling alley, the Dutch PMC to name a few, quite a contrast when I went back in 2005-08. It was already dying a slow death unfortunately along with what the Army did/didn’t do to Bruggen. Happy memories thanks for posting.

Thankyou for this my husband and I spent many years in JHQ also lived at 21 flint drive too from 1997 to 2000 many happy memories, then moved back again into flint drive in 2008 until the closure as my husband was on the close down team. A huge shame to see it abandoned now and over grown. My daughter was 7 when we left and was putting together a project of her family history she loved seeing these pictures.

My wife and I drove to JHQ several times whilst I was working as an MOD civil servant in Hohne and Gutersloh, to see the quarter and shop of the NAAFI. Our last time was in 2013, when we were driving to the Ijmuden ferry in Holland, on my retirement. We came back once in 2016 but couldn't get on the camp, so visited the cemetery for the last time. Great memories

I was there 76-78 as a kid, remember the 'Big Naafi' well as the small 'Buschof Naafi' was nearest me. Use to play in Hardt Woods and parents sometimes took us to that chicken place for evening dinner, Foxbrau or whatever it was where you'd get a half chicken, loved it. The Queens Lower School was bit of a khazi never went to the new Queens but I was in the mighty Blue Pool for nearly the whole summer of '76 once I'd learnt to swim while at St. Georges School.

Wow, that was the same time I was there and I think my parents used to take us to that chicken place too - who knows, maybe I even saw you there?! Happy memories. I remember cycling down to the boating lake near the hospital and an old German guy heard us talking English so he came over and said he was very sorry about the war, apologized and gave my friend Richard Baron and me 2 Deutsch Marks each ( remember those). Some sort of low level war repairations I guess!

Thanks for sharing, i served with the R.A.O.C at 3 Base ammunition & petrolium Depot at Bracht (which is now a caravan holiday park and nature reserve) for 3 yrs in the mid 70s, i was 19 yrs old and living in Germany certainly opened my eyes and i had a ball, i used to visit Rheindahlen for shopping at the NAAFI and evenings twice a week by army bus for nights out at the Marlborough club and another club i cant remember the name of, spent a lot of memorable times there, one night on the way back to camp from the clubs we were drunkenly playing king of the back seat,one lad was a bit to enthusiastic and lept through the back window, he took the complete window with him, we tried to get the civi German driver to stop, but because we were so drunk he wouldnt stop at first as he couldnt see any broken glass where the window should have been, when we finally found the lad whose name i cant remember , he must have got up off the road and fallen over the autobahn barrier onto the grass verge and flaked out, and the funny thing is , there wasnt a mark on him at all that i remember, and yes remember all the vouchers we had to use for cigs,cofee and fuel, i had a German girlfriend from the Dresdner Bank In Breyell near Bracht were we all banked, took her shopping to the Naafi in Reindahlen and she was completely amazed at the prices, especially the Coffee as it was so expensive in the German shops.

Only just stumbled across this video. To the uploader, thank you for sharing. My memories - I was stationed there from May to August 1994. I HATED my time there. I was working for ARRC at the time and my living accommodation was in the NATO blocks at the back of the camp. I can't say I had a good time at the ARRC, thankfully I was sent there only to cover for another lad who was away at the time. It was seen as a 'tongue-in-cheek' punishment posting for single lads but a great posting for pads, and me thinking it was a joke about being a punishment posting realised it was true first week there. The office I was in was located at the very back of the JHQ, and the entrance to JHQ was the other end of the building. Getting from one side to the other took considerable time, not a problem being a fit young soldier, but to get from one side to the other, then walk to the cookhouse and back within an hour was challenging! The other thing was, I was accommodated in the NATO blocks, and this was administered by UKSC(Fwd), the OC being an RLC Major and some very old long list CSM. The OC was very over zealous, almost dictatorial with his leadership and this involved 'raiding' the block two or three times a month, usually between 1 and 4am in the morning looking for booze and females (or even gay males) in the single mans accommodation. I was warned not to bring even a can of booze or my girlfriend in to my room as his punishment usually was losing a stripe and a fine. Two lads I remember being demoted to Private because of this. Utter tosser. He also instigated a guard duty on the UKSC(fwd) MT park. The park was fenced off, within another compound, within the guarded garrison. Three personnel, every night, sleeping duty, within the MT office. WTF! Why? Because there was no other duties to preform at JHQ as it had a dedicated guard force, so he wanted some sort of over night duty for us to perform. There was also a NATO block duty NCO, which I could see sense in (pissed up squaddies with lit cigs, that sort of thing), but guarding an MT park within a guarded garrison? Lots of other memories, but it seemed to me that being a single male within the ARRC at that time was a pain in the anus. The only saving grace was the entertainment on camp. My social life was superb. That NAAFI complex was also one of the best shopping areas I'd ever encountered in my 14 years service (apart from American PX's, but how can you beat them?!). And lastly, to the West of the camp, was it on the boarder with Holland? I remember driving over some Sundays and into a town, in the sunshine, and to a cafe with outside seating, and I'd sit and watch life go past.
@IMAGESOFYESTERYEAR4 жыл бұрын
Yes Holland was just on the border. When I lived in Brunssum, AFCENT, I had to drive my wife to WEGBERG, where our second daughter was borne in 1973. Took about 45 mins to get there and wee just arrived in time for our daughter to be born.

I served in Germany twice 1983-1986 and 1987 -1990 in the RAF at Laarbruch and Gutersloh. After leaving the RAF I have returned with work spending about 5-6 years there and visiting friends and each time I return these days it makes me sad to see how delipidated it has all become but all of us who served in BAOR and RAFG have good memories of what we did out there, but few people know what we did and why we were there now and just how fragile the peace was of the divided West and East Germany as it was

Did two tours of three years each as a child in Rheindahlen. First time, I was at St. David's School rather than st. Andrew's. The second time, after a tour of Cyprus, I had moved up to secondary school and was actually in boarding school. The headmaster at St. David's made special arrangements for my sisters to attend St. David's depsite the fact that we were at the other end of the garrison by then. Such a shame to see what it has become.

I would like to briefly announce the latest status: JHQ: Will be completely demolished, refugees are still being housed in the western part. The rubble is to be heaped up to an artificial mountain, the Hardter forest will be about twice as big in 2050 as it is now. Elmpt / Brüggen: the northern part of the airfield will be an industrial area, the runway will be a solar energy area, the southern and western parts will be a nature reserve. The accommodations in Elmpt have been torn down and become the "Malerviertel" building area. Mönchengladbach: Ayshire Barracks South still active. The northern part is the new home of Borussia Mönchengladbach. Bracht Depot: Brachter Wald nature reserve. Kind regards from the Lower Rhine.

@@IMAGESOFYESTERYEAR Jhq: Demolition of residential buildings and power plants completed. Refugee accommodation, serves as a training ground for the police, border police have similar plans, a prison plan conflicts with a commercial area. Elmpt: You can see it well on Google. Demolition work is almost complete and an industrial park is planned; reality will probably give way to warehouses. Streets are being re-planned and the Elmpters are supposed to make suggestions for names related to the RAF in a competition. A search is still underway for the energy park on the airfield; the south will become a nature reserve. However, both areas are still fenced and guarded due to contaminated sites and construction work.

@@IMAGESOFYESTERYEAR JHQ: Parts of the residential buildings and power plants demolished. Police use it as a training area, the German border guards have similar ideas, the Gladbach authorities want to build there, and a prison is also planned. Elmpt: As you can see on Earth, large parts of the north have been demolished; a commercial area is planned, but it will probably only consist of warehouses. Up to 22,000 trucks are expected per year, which is negatively received by Elmpt residents. An investor is being sought for the energy park; the south is a nature reserve but is still fenced off.

Hi Ralph, a very nice film from the camp. We visited part of it today, the base and part of the residential area. It is sad to see how people lived here, played children, drove cars, was simply life. Now everything is abandoned and will deteriorate more and more over time. It's nice to have found your film, to see how it was back then. So you have at least some pictures of the performances ... I will visit the area a few more times, it did it to me, I fell in love with it. If you like, feel free to follow me at URBEXNER on KZbin to see how your home is doing (...).

@@johnpeacock9673 I was a raw RAF AC2 working in Station Headquarters but had to visit the "Big House" to get passports signed by Group Captain Padre. What a performance to get past the RMP's!

I was born in Westberlin 1974. I still remember that I saw an aeroplane departing from RAF Gatow when I picked up strawberries. I miss the old good times. Working with member of the Stasi isn't nice. Fucking communist. The reunion of Germany shouldn't never have happened.
