Families move out as Wildenrath closes 14.09.12

I lived at RAF Wildenrath from 1998 to 2001 and it was the happiest times of my life even though I was just a child of 7 when we moved there. There was always something happening, a sense of community that I have never found again and it was wonderful. So many great memories, glad I stumbled across this piece as it brought back so many of those treasured memories

Thanks for posting and it brought back so many memories, My father was a Master Navigator /Co Pilot with 40 years service and was flying Pembrokes and Devons with Met Comm Squadron at RAF Northolt and was posted to RAF Wildenrath in 1964 until 1966 and was posted back to Northolt, My brother and I so much enjoyed living in MQs on the camp. and visiting the Astra Cinema every week and the family Mess 'do's' As we were in our teens and girls were important in our life every weekend we drove across the Dutch border in my MG midget to Roermond in Holland and many a good time was had, So many memories even after all these years. Happy days

Touching, I wish what seems like Wildenrath's final family the best for the future. In practical terms I believe the closure of all RAFG major bases a short sighted mistake. At least one with air assets should have been kept.

RAF Police - on the main gate from 1988 to 1991 - Basically got to know everyone ! A unique and wonderful community.

Hen did 7 signal regiment move there? When i left there in 89 they were still at Herford. When i was at Wildenrath it was 21 (Air Support) signalregiment.

Around 94 they left Herford for Krefeld, not sure when they went to wildenrath

I lived there - happy days. I wonder where all the money that RAFG and he rest of BAOR no longer required went? Some wasters mad plan no doubt!

Probably to upgrading and enlarging all the uk bases/garrisons.
