JHS Paul Gilbert PG-14 (This Thing Is A Bit Different)
So everyone seems to have a signature overdrive or distortion. Paul Gilbert is no different (well, he is different in that he's better than most). So what's different about this pedal? Well the controls for one. Let's hope it also sounds good. Spoiler alert. It sounds really different...

TC Electronic MojoMojo + JHS’s love of fuzz = the PG-14. It’s the OD/Dist/Fuzz that Paul & Scott always wanted. Or something like that. Definitely different.

I tried this pedal at a music store but had no luck making it sounding any good, then I went home and watched how Paul Gilbert was setting his and wished I had watched the video before trying it, I may have taken it home. Kudos to Paul for coming up with something different, and Kudos to you for another great video.

Got mine today after seeing PG's own review together with JS and your shredtastic review a.k.a EK's review 😄. By the way @1:11 I replaced the word "overdrive" with "overdrive" through the rest of the video, made it sound better 😂. Subscribed not only for the good demos also for the musical value of awesome shred bits which are always on fire 🔥🧯 Kiitos paljon veli 🤘

Wow,it really is a dynamic overdrive it seems nicely sensitive to pickup, pickup volume, where you are on the neck and how you pull off! I'd love to see another video after you've played with it for a few hundred hours and watched Paul's demo video all about this pedal's features. Did you notice it's self-gating? You may decide it IS your main overdrive pedal after you see Paul's demo

I think maybe this pedal is designed from a humbucker-playing guitarist's perspective. It also seems like there's lots and lots of scope for attaining a wider range of tones from this pedal than from many others of the same basic type. That may be because Paul Gilbert probably plays a lot of "clinics" and one-night-stand-type gigs where he might just show up with a guitar (if that) and be expected to plug into who-knows-what kind of amp and start rockin'. The tone stack, ability to adjust which mid frequency is getting boosted, wide range of available distortion and volume are probably solutions to the problems of a guitar hero who gets lots of invitations to do clinics, one-man-shows, video interviews, video lessons and so on. This pedal seems like it's probably a great tone-shaping tool and worth every penny. Just not to me. I already have pedals that do what this does (but a little more to my taste) and don't need to spend this much to get the tone I'm questing for. Interesting review. Keep up the good work.

In a more recent short from jhs, Josh revealed that he based the filters on Paul's hearing test. I guess to let him turn up the frequencies he has deficiency in.

I have this pedal and you don't really want to have the push knob past 10:00 or 11:00 because it then sounds too fuzzy. My settings are volume around 1:00, Mid around 5:00-4:00, Gain anywhere from 8:00-2:00, Tone anywhere from 11:00-5:00 (typically 2:00), Mid Freq anywhere from 11:00-2:00 (typically 2:00 again), and push anywhere from 8:00-11:00

When you roll the push up it starts spitting like your overdriving and slapping the piss out of a Marshall. It sounds like it’s about to blow some tubes out the back. Awesome. The harder you hit the strings the more it spits up blood onto the audience.

I love Paul Gilbert.... I know this is what he is using now and it sounds cool, but I want to have access to that tone he had back in the day. From what I understand he was one of the many guitar gods that used that 80's ADA preamp.... I just kinda wondering how and why has no one figured out how to get that into a pedal without a crazy price tag....(I do know that a pedal version was released a couple of years ago but Im not sure if it 'captured' the soul of that old unit)... Just wondered what your thoughts on this are?... Love ya too Elmo! ;) always killer vids with killer chops!

Interesting Elmo, I would say that pedal definitely sounds like a fuzz to me, not so much like an overdrive, I kept hoping you would break into Hendrix's Manic Depression. I also wonder has anyone come up with a Marty Friedman pedal yet? That would be great, love his tone with Megadeth, cheers Elmo, Bruce.

I think that it sounds pretty good. I might even get one if our Australian dollar rate doesn't make it prohibitively expensive. With our rates it probably will be too dear for my meagre budget. Sounds good though and pretty quiet sounding which I like, unless that was the noisegate doing its job.

It's meant to be a distortion/overdrive, but dare I call this pedal a fuzzstortion? It's not nearly as finicky as most fuzz pedals and can be placed anywhere on the board. It can do the Eric Johnson thing very well too.

Hey Elmo. One more thing my friend. You might have done this, but I was thinking a video of you showing how you get ready for a gig. How you warm up, what fear you take, how you eq your amp, what guitars and how many you take. What other considerations you have. Also, how to deal with stage freight for the new players, etc. Just a thought. I could listen to you all day because I trust you and I like your integrity, and I love your playing. You're a rare one in that you are honest and a great player that's not sponsored. Not that being sponsored is bad, but it does make reviews suspicious as you know. 😀😉 Thanks again, and as I said. Just a suggestion. Hope it may help sir. Be safe. Hope alm is well worth you and family and friends ny friend.

Why have I been playing for 10+ years and I think okay I'm not bad...then, I heard these types of riffs and it's not that I wouldn't be able to learn/play them with practice--it's that I really don't know where and how people learn those runs/riffs? That's where I get sort of stumped...I wouldn't even know how to find where to learn those precise types of runs.

I thought the idea in PG’s pedal was to use it to have a clean setting on a one channel amp. A bit like using a Boss EQ to clean up a one channel overdriven amp.
