I'd be surprised if they much post-production mixing/editing at all. I agree that they always sound excellent. But sometimes the best mixes are the ones that are just kept simple. Good sounding guitar into a good sound amp into a good sounding mic, and well-placed mics on the drum set.

In Utero Trivia: the vocals were recorded with a pair of RE-20’s panned left and right to capture the movement of Kurt’s head as he sang. It’s a subtle effect but works extremely well.

@@untartelette7545 that's so cool! I have a re20 that I love on kick and I've wanted a 421 for a while to use on various things. I'll have to try a setup like that with my re20, another dynamic on the other side, and maybe my wa47 or k67x in the middle. I have a Cole's 4038 I could throw in the setup too. Sounds like a fun experiment 😊

Conspiracy theory α: Land Devices is a side project by someone that works for JHS, and Josh is cool with it. Conspiracy theory Ώ: Four of the Land Devices original eight are one person, whom fluxed into four counterparts due to a temporary interdimensional rift, later to be lost to time while being chased by the United States Government outside of Area S4, and last heard on a call from a pay phone to the Coast to Coast radio show (On September 11, 1997).

My understanding is that a sonic maximiser is designed to replicate the fact that the speed of sound varies slightly depending on frequency. In real life, a high frequency arrives at our ear at a slightly different time to a low frequency, when both tones are produced from the same source at the same time. So, I understand a sonic maximiser is a delay, where the delay time is varied for the various frequency ranges within a sound.

I like the aesthetic of Land Devices for sure and if there is humor behind that, all the better. The "First Quality" and the mixer are definitely something pedal aficionados could use. As for Nirvana, I saw them a couple of times before they became famous up in Washington state at a party and a bar. They were something to see for sure, they played very loud and aggressively but you could tell there was more going on than just volume.

It's funny that even with the voice on the "call" distorted, it's pretty damn easy to identify Nick as the one who recorded it through his speech mannerisms... Furthermore, the chosen record for record time "In Utero" is a pretty damn clever tip, as utero means womb, and so it can be understood as "In the Womb", as if Land Devices were being gestaded within JHS. In utero is the album that connected with me. Pennyroyal tea jumped out as at me like a single person having a conversation with themselves, except during the response section you realize it's not a self conversation but one with many people. Plus I love Kurt's guitar sound on this one. It's almost like it's semi buried, tucked in with a blanket for the night under the stars of his voice and Dave's drums. Chris's bass just stays mellow throughout like the stuffed animal next to him, soft, simple and consistent.

Ohhhh..... love the parallel effect mixing. Gotta try that out. As to Nirvana - I'm fortunate enuf to have seen them, in their fist shows outside of their hometown. I was Staff/Adjunct faculty @ Evergreen State College in Olympia WA. I was playing in a Blues/R&B/Funk band. I thot them but rough around the edges, but cool. Olympia was a hotbed of new & alt music. Besides Nirvana, Sup-Pop records started up (Hiya Calvin) & the Riot Grrrl sound started up there; with Bikini Kill & Sleater-Kinney. Kathleen Hanna, of Bikini Kill, was one of our student employees. Many many other bands & styles came out of that area, Good times..... These days, I do a solo show and usually include an acoustic version of Nirvana's 'In Bloom'. Thanks to Sturgill Simpson for that arrangement.

In Utero was my first Nirvana album! I'd heard people talk about them since middle school, and I'd heard all of the radio songs, but in 2006 the guitarist in my band told me I needed to hear In Utero. Incesticide is my favorite album, but I think my favorite Nirvana song is "Milk It," from In Utero.

I think In utereo might be my favorite nirvana record because it was such a diversion from what people we’re probably expecting after the commercial success of Nevermind. The intensity is palpable all the way through.

Hope you do a video on Farm Pedals one day. Been on the fence about getting the Black Flag for a while now - not enough demos out there!

In Utero is definitely their best album. It shows a huge evolution in his lyrics.

In Utero might legit be my favorite album of all time. For a couple years, I didn't like it very much in comparison to Nevermind, because it was so harsh and jarring much of the time. But circa my freshman year of college (and a great deal of associated angst), I got it. The record just made sense, from the boredom and alienation in Serve the Servants to the wordless anguish of Milk It to the sad beauty of All Apologies. It becomes all the more haunting when listened to in light of Cobain's suicide, but even without that knowledge it's still a masterpiece of rock.

In Utero is probably my favorite Nirvana record, but then it’s the record that got my first band started. I don’t remember much, but I know it we put this on in school and some of us kind of said in unison, we should do this. So I may be a little biased, but I LOVE all their records.
