In Utero Trivia: the vocals were recorded with a pair of RE-20’s panned left and right to capture the movement of Kurt’s head as he sang. It’s a subtle effect but works extremely well.
@untartelette75453 жыл бұрын
It was a RE-20 on the left and a 421 on the right, with a russian Lomo tube mic in the center. Albini sold the mics a couple years ago. There's a photo of the setup.

@@untartelette7545 that's so cool! I have a re20 that I love on kick and I've wanted a 421 for a while to use on various things. My understanding is that a sonic maximiser is designed to replicate the fact that the speed of sound varies slightly depending on frequency. In real life, a high frequency arrives at our ear at a slightly different time to a low frequency, when both tones are produced from the same source at the same time. So, I understand a sonic maximiser is a delay, where the delay time is varied for the various frequency ranges within a sound.

I was Staff/Adjunct faculty @ Evergreen State College in Olympia WA. I was playing in a Blues/R&B/Funk band. I thot them but rough around the edges, but cool. Olympia was a hotbed of new & alt music. Besides Nirvana, Sup-Pop records started up (Hiya Calvin) & the Riot Grrrl sound started up there; with Bikini Kill & Sleater-Kinney. Kathleen Hanna, of Bikini Kill, was one of our student employees. Many many other bands & styles came out of that area, Good times..... These days, I do a solo show and usually include an acoustic version of Nirvana's 'In Bloom'. Thanks to Sturgill Simpson for that arrangement.

But circa my freshman year of college (and a great deal of associated angst), I got it. The record just made sense, from the boredom and alienation in Serve the Servants to the wordless anguish of Milk It to the sad beauty of All Apologies. It becomes all the more haunting when listened to in light of Cobain's suicide, but even without that knowledge it's still a masterpiece of rock.
