@@saculsheetno, he’s correct, it’s the circuit around it, and how it’s tuned to that component to achieve a specific tonal outcome. Let’s set aside the definition “better means more reliable, consumes less power, is lower cost, is easier to manufacture” and define “better means sound better”. With that, you’re now firmly in personal bias territory, your “better” likely doesn’t match mine. The parts are the parts, they’re no better or worse, quantitatively, than each other, they’re just different, they have different attributes and qualities. It’s how you wrap a circuit around them that changes things. You can create the ultimate shitty fuzz pedal with that BETTER $25 germanium transistor, I know, I have, it truly sucked ass (like all fuzz does). I can’t stand fuzz, absolutely hate it, you can put ANY germanium fuzz in front of me and I’ll say any other overdrive or distortion pedal, using silicon, is better. Then there’s the fact germanium is so god damn finicky, let’s make sure the room is exactly 71.394°F so we can get THAT SOUND. I’ve already finished playing my set, and am drinking with your girlfriend, while you’re staring at your germanium to warm up.

Weeelllllllll, in the age of industry, old things can quite often be better than new things. Cars and trucks. It's not secret that older trucks, on average, last longer than new trucks. I think it's because there's more going on in new vehicles. More to upkeep. Maintain. Tools- power drills, wrenches, toolboxes- using cheaper parts and materials to make larger quantities to sell more. Old Craftsman tools are better than new ones. That's not subjective, really. So I can understand in some scenarios where older = better. But it definitely doesn't apply everywhere. I don't know enough about/haven't played enough pedals to say one way or the other on them.

I’ve recently got my answer to the “Tone is in the fingers” question. During quarantine I’ve listened to hundreds of voice memos of myself from across the years, on electric, acoustic, single coil, humbuckers, fuzz, tubescreamers, this delay, that delay, etc. and I finally know what I sound like regardless what I play. I will say I needed to “play around” all those tones, and I’ve found some tones that help me play more “like myself” than others. It’s a weird thing: when you find your right pedals and right rig, it just sounds like you and you stop thinking about gear.

I love how Zappa told Steve Vai that tone is not in your hands - it's in your HEAD! Ofc it's lots of different elements combined + gear that make you sound a certain way, but you hear that sound that lives in your head first, and then you recreate it with whatever u have. Zappa added the missing link to the equation that makes the most sense to me.

There was a whole Guitar Player magazine article talking about how you should buy up an analog delay while you could, because when the remaining supplies ran out, your only option was going to be digital… I was like, “What the f*ck do you mean only one company in the whole world makes them?? And why the f*ck would another company not just start making more?? I don’t know how long it was before they started being made again, but I couldn’t believe they were saying, “Well, that’s that. You will benefit from 6 months of regular solid guitar practice over buying a new tube screamer. Trust me. I've seen people half my age breeze past my skill level in half the time. One of my favorite arguments is when people go "you said the line 6 POD sounds just like a tube amp and now you're saying a Helix sounds like a tube amp bleeeeh whine whine grumble grumble" The truth is that the old crappy emulations were just the best we had at the time. The ones we have now are bordering on realistic and even those will sound like crap to us in 5-10 years when we have something even more accurate in our hands. Also, comparing everything we have now to tubes is a fool's errand, instead of constantly chasing emulation we should embrace the things solid state and digital excell at.

As a fellow electronics guy, I pretty much knew the answers going in, but there is always something to learn. One thing about BBD chips though, is that they're obsolete and all that is widely available are either NOS or cheap copies. The good reissues seem to be harder to get a hold of without spending dollars to tens of dollars for a single chip. But that's also coming from a guy who hasn't yet seriously looked into acquiring them. So take that with a grain of salt.

Been a studio owner since the mid-90’s. I’ve sat thru more hours of “got to find my tone” then I care to admit. A majority of time once they find “their tone”, the part they played (in a fraction of the time it took to get the tone) wasn’t worth recording in the first place.

His "the chip isn't the circuit" thing bothers me. I mean, I think his point is that you should use what you think sounds good, which he explicitly says a number of times, and I agree with, but it feels like he's saying that you can get the same sound out of a different chip/transistor/whatever as long as you redesign the circuit properly, and that's just not the case. Each of these different components has different characteristics. For instance, silicon transistors transition from linear amplification to saturation much more quickly than germanium transistors do. Neither of those is inherently better, but they are different, and it's exceedingly difficult, if not impossible, to make one perform like the other. So if you want the sound of one of them over the other, it's unlikely that you're going to be satisfied with the other, regardless of how the circuit is modified.

Fun video! I find these types of questions can dominate my mental space when I’m jamming alone and tweaking my board, but everything goes out the window when I’m jamming with friends! It just becomes a matter of “Is it loud enough?” and “Is it sitting somewhat passably in the mix?” Going down to just 3 pedals and a tuner for jam sessions was a life saver.

"We went to the moon … but we can't make a chip for an overdrive pedal? Do you know how stupid that sounds?" Of course we *could* make it, but no electronics manufacturer *would* make it. They transitioned away from these parts because they developed better technology to do the things that they were intended to do. Guitar effects makers were using these things intentionally at the edge of their capabilities: at the places where they performed incorrectly. Companies who buy these chips in *real* bulk don't want that. They're uninterested in the edge cases. And semiconductor manufacturers have provided that. They've moved past those old crappy technologies. But it's explicitly those old crappy technologies that we like the sound of. We could recreate the manufacturing facilities that produced them, but it would cost _many_ millions of dollars to recreate those facilities, so that they could generate enough transistors to saturate the guitar pedal market? What's that going to be? Apparently there are fewer than 1.5million guitar pedals sold every year. Even if they could be sold for $10 per (while NOS germanium transistors are being sold for about $1 per), that would still probably take 10 years just to make their money back. So, yeah, it's technologically feasible; it's just not economically feasible.

Josh you could do a series on styles and what players should buy. Blues, rock, metal, punk and pop video series and the best options. That way folks can just stop worrying about all this ship lol. Like a video saying if you like 80s pop and alternative just buy a JC120 and a comp and an EQ lol and maybe an OD and then practice practice practice. I mean isnt practice practice practice what the old man is essentially saying. PEOPLE PLAY GUITAR DONT TALK PLAY LEARN SONGS GET REALLY FN TIGHT AND GO PLAY LIVE AND MAKE MONEY AND GET FANS. Now you can worry about germanium tones after you get rounds of applause lol. TAKE A PRODUCTION COURSE TOO SO YOU CAN RECORD SOMETHING THAT SOUNDS GOOD IF YOURE A DUMMY LIKE ME.

What's the deal with using guitar pedals with line level instruments like synths? How much of a difference is there between just turning down the synth's master volume versus running the signal through a reamp box first?

People that worry about all these things arent practicing enough lol. Its like the guy at GNC store trying to find magic pills to get ripped instead of just being at the gym sweating.LOL The old man at the bar is saying FN NOTHING COMES EASY SON AND YOU NEED TO PLAY P[LAY PLAY ALL DAY. PLAYING BLUES right DOESNT ALLOW YOU TO PLAY metal RIGHT. Find style if you want to be really good and just stick with it. Or be a guy like me who is a blues player who is decent but just studies music and isnt worrying about rocking the stadiums and being rich. You want to make good recording go take a production course if you arent one of those really smart guys like Josh that can figure out things on his own

IMHO most "sonic differences" between similar components can probobly be compensated for fairly easily with a slight tweak of the EQ........seriously you will see the 19 Boutique Tube Screamer shootout and some are just a tad darker sounding than the others.......turn the treble knob and they sound the same.

6:36 if you have active electronics in your guitar the buffer is is the pickup or eq (as in a bass) so you can drive 100' of cable no problem. So having all true bypass effects is not a problem with active electronics.

Mannn.......when I was 16, I had that RP100R. And like all those earlier digital pedals by Digitech, that piece of garbage broke. The foot switches broke, and then one of the adjustment knobs started glitching out and would randomly change values on presets while playing. Then I had another one that was the next model with an expression pedal. And it did the same thing. Never again, Digitech!
