Nope. Its a marketing strategy. His company sells experiences, not pedals. He sells overpriced itens with "mods". The buyer needs to be immersed in the context of pedal land to understand the value of his pedals. Why buy a Bonsai and not a TS? The buyer needs to be educated first. By making videos of other companies (and even endorsing their products) he can cut a slice of the pie redirecting the interest from a TS to a Bonsai.

@@vexguine You and me owning guitars, in some way is marketing for the companies making those guitars. What you wrote, isn't entirely untrue, but the videos Josh makes, first of all seem to be a celebration of guitar gear and the culture around it. Does is somehow serve as marketing for his own product? Probably yes, but this marketing he's putting out is very entertaining and informative. I don't see him implying anywhere that he's mother Theresa for making these youtube videos. @@Jedi_Mindtricked If you're talking about AdSense income, the money is insignificant compared to his pedal sales. With standard average USA CPM of $7 and KZbin's cut of 45%, best case scenario he's only making roughly $1400 of GROSS revenue from this video in 14 months since the video launched (assuming nobody on the video's 360k viewers use adblocker). That's $100 per month, MAX. JHS' estimated annual revenue is $650,000 or even more. This particular video income amounts to max. 0.21% of his company's annual revenue in best case scenario. In reality, it could be much lower. That's not counting the man-hours capital he spend shooting, editing, and actual capital he used to purchase the pedals for the video. The thing is, he's bringing invaluable information for people who don't have access to many pedals. IMHO, he deserves the money he generates from his videos. William Bodie would you care to elaborate? I’m not trying to incite or make waves, however if he is stealing schematics then I would to know which builders or pedal companies are making claims so I can go support them by purchasing their products. There is only so many ways to build a circuit and a pedal that us the consumers would be interested in. While I can sympathize with builders being passionate about their products; and why their product is better; there comes a point where marketing and consumer preference weigh more than a “stolen design” claim. While I do have my own personal opinion on Josh and JHS pedals the wealth of knowledge and pedal history (that you don’t have to pay a dime for might i add) that Josh imparts on viewers of his channel is incredible. Either way in my opinion KZbin has become like QVC for gearheads and musicians alike and the majority of these type of videos are commercials to fire up our GAS.

On one of the assignments, we were given a nameless coverless guitar pedal. Every group was given a different pedal. We had to document how electronic signals can be manipulated and modified. We had to draw a schematic, and explain how our assigned guitar pedal worked and what it did. Very good lesson. I decided I liked playing with guitar pedals much more than encryption equipment.

Hey there, Josh. I want to offer my sincere thanks for this and your whole series of videos that I am just discovering. I have been playing guitar for about 40 years, and I have always been much more of a guitar guy than an amp guy. Pedals were never something that compelled me until recently, so I've been wading into them cautiously. It seems natural to buy a used Fano guitar for $2K, but the idea of a $300 pedal freaks me out (this is probably not rational, but it is me). So just getting a guy like me into the market is a great idea. The idea of a closed market with an "I win you lose" approach is likely to fail, because the number of pedal users will be static or even shrink as old dudes age out. Take someone who has never owned a delay and get him/her to appreciate the nuances, and I imagine you will create a new customer - because who wouldn't love a pedal with a picture of an orange slice or Scooby Doo ghost. Mad props.

This year I went to record using my silverface Fender Deluxe and while getting sounds I quickly kicked the TS9 off my board in favor of the American Sound with more drive dialed in. It's an amazing pedal and it cost me $39.

Love it Josh! I have SEVERAL Joyo pedals, including the Preamp House running into the CAB BOX. The CAB BOX is simply an amazing tool! I have the Aquarius and Atmosphere, as well as the Tauren, which is a nice gainy Klon klone for me anyway, and the Taichi, which appears to be a Zen Drive type of pedal. Love that you aren't afraid to demonstrate other brands, you are truly amazing!

Hey Josh, I love your videos and love how you spread love even to brands that the snobs hate! I was curious if you would ever do an episode on Digitech, who get I think maligned despite having some incredibly innovative products (alongside some serious duds), also their whole history coming out of DOD/the whammy series.

My favorite Odd Combo : Kylie Minogue & Nick Cave - Where the Wild Roses Grow.. I had always loved Nick Cave, but with this 1996 song from the Murder Ballads album I finally enjoyed something from the singing budgie. The darkness of Nick and the glitterball of Kylie.
Neil Young's Rust Never Sleeps was one of my Dad's favorite albums when I was a kid. Primed me for a lifelong love of fuzz as well as acoustic vaguely countryish folksy guitar stuff.

Ya, I recently bought most of the "R Series" from Joyo. I have the preamp house, the cab box, the tauren, the uzi, the dark flame, the tai chi, the zip amp, the legal done and tonight also bought the narcissis chorus...lol. Love every one of them. AND YOU helped turn me onto to the Joyo line up !!! THX !!!

Hey Josh, would love too see you do a video on NUX pedals. I have the Atlantic delay and reverb, I got it simply because my echo puss doesn't have a tap tempo. One of the cheapest pedals on my board and it's super impressive, I play phsyc rock with my band but often play alot of blues and funk and wow it's versatile. It's realy something I think you would be impressed with, as a luthier I deal with the typical guitar "myths and bullshit" every day, if you put a blindfold on those people I reckon anyone could mistake it for a very high end pedal. Good video, cheers! The more affordability options for younger players the better I say.

i got i.d . has long been one of my favorite pearl jam songs.a song that inspired me as a young musician and songwriter that i had all but forgotten about. what is more inspiring to me however, is a man who owns a guitar effects pedal company who does web videos giving his competitors props for making quality products at an affordable price. at a low point in my life it is inspiring and refreshing to see that there are still good honest people out there. i tell all my buddies to buy jhs pedals not because of there quality ( which in my opinion is outstanding) but because josh is an outstanding individual who clearly shares my passion for music, so who better to give my money to than him.

I've been curious about these, I'm glad we get a chance to see how you use them.. But Josh, I'm confused about calling them budget. Except for the XVI, these are in the price realm of similar BOSS pedals, and the multi function ones are marginally cheaper than their Electroharmonix equivalents.

Once I concluded that I needed a delay with options I compiled a long list, winnowed it down to 5, and ultimately decided on the Joyo Aquarius. And I couldn't be happier. It is a mainstay on my primary 5-pedal tone plank. Almost went for their reverb, too, but landed on the Polaris instead. You didn't show the blinking edge light on the pedal. Thought it was great for about an hour, then I turned it off. Oh, and the looper is great.

I don't know how I missed this one before, but this was a great video. The 2 that stood out for me were the Aquarius and the Cab Box. I have a Joyo AC Tone, and I love it! I've used it just as a stand alone amp in a box, and it works great! Used it on my album that way, sometimes with a Digitech Mosaic into it. I was hesitant at first, but the more I find out about Joyo, the more impressed I am with them. As for odd musical combinations, I'm really digging the 2 albums that Robert Plant and Alison Krauss have done together. I like the direction Plant has been going anyway, but those two together are mind-boggling and inspiring.

I really appreciate you making this video. I just spent a LOT of money on an electric after searching for nearly three years for the perfect guitar. I'm switching from playing acoustic for 20+ years, so I'm making some major updates to my pedals. Some will still work but there's so much more that I"m going to be exploring. Having a budget brand to look to, really helps the expansion. However, I want to support JHS as well, especially after seeing you promote more affordable brands like Joyo. If there were TWO pedals from JHS that I MUST have, what would they be? Pedals that just can't compare to a more budget brand like Joyo, Donner, Azor, Flamma, etc. Thanks!
