This is Part 1 of the 就 (jiu) series. In this video, we are going to look at a simpler framework to understand 就 (jiu) as an adverb in most occasions. The video will introduce about 11 patterns in which we use 就 as the adverb. More variations will be explored in future videos.

In the example: 他想买哪个电脑就买哪个电脑 we could almost say that "two questions make an answer". Because the question-word 哪 appears both before and after 就. Yet the sentence is a statement, not a question. I first saw this structure in the sentence: 谁有钱我就卖给谁 ("I will sell to whoever has money") It took me a long time to figure out the meaning. Partly because 谁 is the subject in the first clause, yet it is the object in the second clause. Also, "whoever" is normally rendered as 谁也. But 也 is not used in this structure.

Could you please explain the differences between 了,过,and 着。there's also some other confusing things too like the usage or 一下 or reduplication, when a verb is repeated twice with 一 in middle. Eg; 笑一笑。
@user-pm2zv9fs5r
@user-pm2zv9fs5r 3 жыл бұрын
when u have a verb repeated with a 一, it implies that the action is small. for example a little smile or chuckle. mostly it's just a feeling (which is why it's hard to grasp) but think of it as a way to really emphasize what you are saying rather than it having a specific meaning. as for ”过“ this is a verb right? but it can also be used for when a situation passes. you might know about this, but don't use this word for people (like 我过了 as a way to say you passed) unless you add on a location like you passing over a BRIDGE. as for ”了“, this is just a particle word (idk if this is the correct term) but you will commonly see it added to the end of a sentence, signifying that whatever the sentence is has happened in the past. If the sentence is long, you will have to add it at the end of a verb such as "吃了”, but it doesn't always have to follow a verb. in the situation that the word isn't following a verb, it has to be a compact sentence, so you can write your action (verb) the LOCATION and the word "了". there are exceptions, but this is what you will commonly see. ex: 我到(verb-to arrive)了餐馆(restaurant). the same sentence except with the particle at the very end of the sentence 我到餐馆了. both are fine, it's just that the first one might seem awkward in certain situations. and the same word has a double meaning and pronunciation in which "le" turns into "liao". you will commonly see this with "了解” (liao jie) which means to understand. again, this might be something you already know, but I hope this clears some things

Since 是。。。的 is also used for emphasis. Is 那个是Taylor的 the same meaning as 就?
@ChineseGrammarSimplified
@ChineseGrammarSimplified 4 жыл бұрын
No, I am actually planning to make a video about this. There are actually three layers of information involved here. 1. 是……的 is only used for emphasizing "How" "when" "where" "why" "with whom" a past event happed. ex. "Taylor 是昨天买那个电脑的"。Notice here, 是 is not the verb, the verb is 买。 If you take the 是……的 away, the sentence should still make sense. That is a simple way to determine if the sentence is actually using 是……的 pattern for emphasis. 2. Therefore, the sentence you gave is not really one with the "是……的" pattern, because 是 in your sentence was used as a verb. Your sentence is really a "Subj 是 + description 的 + Obj" sentence, but the object is omitted. 3. Notice in the first point, 是……的 is used in a very precise occasion for some specific emphasis. And it's location is different in the sentence from 就 (the arrow 就 goes before Verb)。So it is therefore different from 就.

I only want to learn Traditional Chinese Characters so I can read some basic Chinese. What do you recommend? Right now I’m studying from an App, a few books, and you! The App isn’t exactly what I want. I think the way I would learn best is by the radicals. All words that have one radical then move on to the next radical. Or learn all characters together that have the context. My book kind of does this, but it doesn’t explain the measure words. I would be grateful for any help. I was looking for a contribute area on your bar, but couldn’t find one.

The example sentences at 3:53, don't make any sense to me as a native English speaker. "As long as Taylor is happy", so if Taylor becomes unhappy, his mom won't buy one anymore? I do not understand the context for any of the example sentences.
@ChineseGrammarSimplified

Your understanding is correct. We can somehow assume that Taylor is a spoiled brat in other sample sentences. In this one, we can maybe imagine that mom is posting a condition...

Av Nkig they essentially mean the same thing in this case. But 就 here is an adv. (placed after subj.) and it can be used for other purpose. 然后 is conjunction, which can go before the subject. You can see them used in one sentence as 然后他就去吃饭了。
