Thank you for this video. From a beginners standpoint, I grew up in a big city in the west coast of the United States and never have the opportunity to go fishing. If I did it was only tie a hook to a stick and put a worm on it. Never knew how to tie a knot properly or how to properly worm a hook. I had moved to the “country” in the mid south where fishing was a big thing and lakes everywhere. This video helped me a lot to get started hooking properly and there are not enough videos on KZbin that will take the patience to show you these things. Thank you on helping me catch my first fish!

thanks mate, jig fishing and dropshotting are both great methods for the canal, as you say, it keeps you on the move which is handy in this cold weather, with a lot of canals local to you it's a perfect way to fish👍

I experimented on the canal this morning using a split shot rig. I was using tiny 1 inch curly tail grubs, but instead of having the split shot 6 - 12 inches from the hook as I normally would, I had the split shot right up against the knot on my line clip so it had a similar action to a cheburaska or flex head. It worked a treat and I caught an absolute chunk of a perch on a pumpkinseed grub. It's a rig that I'm definitely gonna use more this season

nice one peter, yes you're pretty much mimicking a cheb or flex head, what you did is a lot cheaper too, just goes to show you don't have to spend a fortune on jig heads, there's always a cheaper way👍🎣😁 did you weigh the chunk?, how big mate?.

@@MarkCarp no I don't carry scales because I'm used to catching wasps, and these quality perch don't come around that often on my local canal. I had this idea after looking at flex heads that I could recreate the same action using split shot, so I bought some custom made 2.3 gram split shot from Lure Factors and some of the tiny fly fishing type mustad snap links from Allan at AGM, and the combination of the two gives an almost identical action to the flex heads

Started back at fishing this year after a 30 year gap since my teens. Fishing mostly coarse on the canals for bream and roach and have done pretty well. now autumn is here I'm giving lure fishing a go on the canals, I'm close to the shroppie and spotted a couple of places I know on your videos. I've had a few short trips this last week, so far haven't caught anything but have felt a few bites, just not used to it yet I guess! hopefully some of the tips I've picked up watching your stuff will pay off! thanks ian, they are tough areas for sure and you won't get loads of bites, if you're feeling the odd pluck it's probably small perch, i don't know how big your lures are i drop down to 1 inch so i've a chance at hooking the little ones, if you can start catching them you can build up from there👍

@@MarkCarp I went and tried again after work yesterday and took a much lighter rod, also tried taking it slower with a 2g jig white and red 2.25 inch spikey soft lures. hooked into something decent but lost it before it got to the surface, missed another in a similar way shortly after. Just as I was losing the daylight I chucked on a tiny spinner to troll back to the car and quickly hooked into a decent sized jack , got him in to within a foot of the bank but as I turned to get my net he slipped the hook and vanished. At least now I've got the technique getting bites I can progress from there! All as a result of your guidance in your videos so thanks again!

@@up2u225 I was half expecting that mate, the fish can be very difficult to pin down and you'll find you spend long periods catching nothing until you stumble across them. Apart from that, the storms/floods have put a lot of extra water in the canal system and that's not such a good thing. Just keep chipping away at it and you'll get there👍

I was looking for this video a couple of weeks ago when i started jig fishing and needed some advice, unfortunately I did not suceed in finding it and had to learn all this on my own while spending a ton of money on different equipment :D still, very nice and informative video, other youtube channels also do similar 'introduction' videos, but they are mostly ads for different lures/rods manufacturers which is very irritating. Great info in the video, I’ve always fished with spinning lures and other baits (I mostly fish for trout) but have never tried jigs though I have always wanted to start jig fishing for crappie and perch, I picked up an assortment of grubs, tubes, shad, and crayfish imitation. I heard about a barbel, never seen or heard of carp coming from the area but I wouldn't mind betting a few are in there. thanks darren, yes it's ideal for transport on a bike, the rods are about 7 to 7.5ft but they are two piece so a setup is easily broken down, it's a good change from carp fishing too, that's generally what my lure fishing is, a break from carp, a change is as good as a rest as they say👍

take the young one somewhere you know there are lots of perch and use a small 1" lure mark, it's the best way to get him catching with lures, regular bites will stop him getting bored mate👍

not sure how bad your winters are max?, over here i only lure fish in winter, it's harder but the fish can still be caught if you fine down and concentrate on working your lures deep and slow👍

Mark Carp the winters here are pretty bad and the bass go dormant in the winter and spawn in the late spring. The sunfish also only go deep so going deep and slow could work

yeah it's going to be a while isn't it, i'm not sure what the flow is like on the stour but the dee up here is wide and steady walking pace on the lower reaches, I can get away with 5 grams for the jig head and 2-3" for the lure👍🎣

I am retired now so have plenty of time when the river calms down. I fly fish the southern chalk streams from April which is brilliant. anyway your a bloody star ive gained so much confidence watching you. perhaps you could show us how to handle pike. they scare the crap out of me. have you ever watched John Hall river keeper. he fly fishes the Test in winter for giant pike. awesome. merry xmas to you and your family

Tried jig fishing for first time after years course and fly fishing. Failed miserably on Leeds Liverpool at Rufford. I caught 4 tree branches some leaves and a bag of water. This is before watching this tutorial, I was retrieving like a fly which from what you've described was far too quick. Will try slow and low and see how I get on Very detailed videi

yeah sam go as slow as you can on the retrieve specially at this time of year, if the water is well coloured and you've got a decent depth under your feet, say 3ft-ish, consider some dibling, it's a bit of a boring method but it might grind you a few fish out👍

thanks mate, i prefer jig fishing of the two, it's more suited to searching for the fish, i tend to drop shot an area i know they'll be present, each method has it's day. i'm currently putting together a 'location' video on how to find perch and pike on the canal, it'll be a while before it's finished but it should prove helpful👍

@@9secondlegend unlucky, it's not as easy as it looks is it mate?, the canal doesn't have massive amounts of fish and they can be very difficult to find, location is most of it but there are plenty of other variables too, choice of lure, retrieve and the conditions on the day etc. even your concentration, you start off with the best of intentions but once you've been chucking that lure around for no return your focus tends to go a little bit. you've not started on the easiest of venues, in fact you've started on one of the hardest so don't give up, just keep chipping away at it and search the canal until you find them👍

It’s very rare I go above 3g when it comes to jig head weight I can’t remember the last time I used more than 1g I’ve been smashing the canals using a Cheb rig you should try a cheb rig mark there awesome

It’s no problem mate and thanks mark I’ve even caught bream to nearly 9lb using a cheb rig but one thing I will say use the smallest weight you can get away with I find it’s easier to put more action into the lure and don’t use swivels use a shockleader knot or something like a Albright knot

what are your thoughts about protecting the hook from catching grass or wood etc. Either by sticking the hook end into the plastic (hook sharp end not exposed) or using those jigheads where hook is already protected

hi again tom, I don't like them mate, I like the hook point to be as exposed as possible, I've always found weedless type lures to have a very poor hook up rate, fortunately none of the waters I fish are weedy so I don't need to use them, they are very much a last resort for me and they should only be used literally where you couldn't retrieve a lure without getting snagged👍

yes William, you have to counter the flow so definitely heavier jig head on the river, how heavy depends on the flow and you can only really do it by trial and error on the day, my starting point would be 3 grams but i'd want some heavier, 5, 7 and 10 would be in my box for flowing water👍

Can smaller perch be avoided by using bigger size hooks? For example same weight, just bigger size hooks. Or how does the hook size correlate to catched perch size?

hi tom, you can't avoid small perch with a bigger hook, they have a large mouth and even the small ones can get a big hook in their mouth, most of the time I use anything between a size 2 or a size 4 hook and I've caught perch on lures that are as big as they are👍 for bigger perch just use bigger lures, you'll find the average stamp of perch is higher if you use 3 and 4 inch lures than if you use 1 and 2 inch lures. match the hook size to the lure size, it's the lure that matters, a big hook with a small bait will still mean small fish if that makes sense?👍

@@MarkCarp Just to be sure, you mean you are using size 2/0 or size 4/0. Or you mean actual size 2 and 4 (which are smaller than even size 1/0 ? And I assume you should weight both the jig head and plastic lure> For example if my rod is 2-12g so the maximum amount is 12 g, if plastic weights 4 grams that means max of 8g jighead (4g plastic + 8 g jighead = 12g) ? I am asking since in many videos I get confused as people often speak only about jighead weight and not about plastic lure weight that they mount on it

@@tomjens2046 actual size 2 and size 4, all my lure fishing is ultra light, I've never actually used a hook bigger than a 1/0, that's the biggest hook I have, most of the time it's 2,4 or 6 for my fishing, you need to match the size of the hook to the size of the bait. I'm going to include a link to a site I use for buying lures, take a look at the soft plastic lures they sell, they also have rigging suggestions and suggested jig sizes and weights for the lures, it should make working things out a lot easier👍 regarding the weight, I've never actually loaded a rod up to the max, the heaviest jig I use is around 5g and most of the time I use less than half that, because of this I usually talk just in jig head weights myself, angler's don't usually load ultra light rods, the idea is you use the bare minimum sized weight you need, or you buy a heavier weighted rod capable of throwing bigger lures. However, if I was going to load the rod to the max i'd err on the side of caution and include the weight of the lure, so as you say, with a 4g lure i'd only use a maximum 8g jig head on a 12g weighted rod👍 the website is agm lures, it's very useful👍 www.agmdiscountfishing.co.uk/

hi ric, thanks for the kind words, those areas are hard work mate, the basin at the bottom of the double lock is one of the best areas round there but you'll only get a few fish out of it on the right day. down your neck of the woods try swanley, coole pilate and calveley, i think they are all better than the barbridge area or anywhere north of there (i mainly fish north of there and its hard)👍 if you've just started i'd recommend you swerve the canal and do a lap of the sandhole, it has perch and LOTS of pike, you can usually get a few bites from there but use a wire trace👍

Can we say that higher weight is easier in terms of feeling your lure? This I ask because I have an idea to firstly test my spinning with higher weights so that I understand how to feel the lure. And once learned, I will move to lighter jigheads. Or do you say there is no much difference in terms of how well you feel your jighead in the water (based on different weights)? Also -how much more farther can you cast 10g jig vs 5 or 3 g jig. Just ballpark figures, to get the general idea how much distance lost (whenh it needed) Latsly - how do you feel when the jig is going thise 6 inches above the water? I know you can only feel when it hits bottom

hi again tom, yes the higher the weight the easier it is to feel the lure but it also means you need to retrieve it quicker if you want to keep it off the bottom (straight retrieve), I like to go as light as possible so I can slow the retrieve down, a slow target is an easy target in my view👍 I can get a 3g jig head across my local canal which is about 8-10 metres across, 5g will go a few metres further and a 10g you should be able to get triple that distance, the rod and reel and how much line is loaded on it will affect exactly how far you can cast. lastly, you can't feel when a jig head is 6" above the bottom, you just have to give it your best guess, if you reel fast with the rod held high your lure will be up near the surface, if you keep the rod tip down and reel slow then you'll be down near the bottom, I like to drop my lure to the bottom a few times during the retrieve, just to make sure it's down in the right area👍

@@tomjens2046 I prefer braided mainline for my lure fishing tom, you want load your reel so it's 2-3mm under the lip, if you load it level you'll get a birds nest when casting so make sure it's under the lip of the spool. alternatively, if you load with mono then make sure it's level with the lip of the spool👍

Thanks Paul, have a look at the website agm lures, you can find it through Google, it gives recommended jig sizes and rigging suggestions for your lures. Regarding the rods, I like hto rockfish, sakura and savage gear, they are the rods I own but anything by shimano or daiwa will do, its the weight rating of the rod that's important and for small lures like these anything in the 0.5g to 12g range will be fine👍

Mark no problem I'm out tomorrow i usually fish for pike on a planner board love them things you just catch more and better quality pike with a planner board i use the big jon sidewinder planner board awesome way to fish for big pike best cannal pike so far 21 pound 2oz caught at Liverpool LEEDS CANAL IN haskayne just outside of maghull Liverpool I'm a scouser planner board fishing for pike i recommend the big jon sidewinder is the best it can go left and right other planner boards go only one way so you need 2 of them tye amount of pike i catch on the planner board is ridiculous mark.Derek

What would you recommend as a hook link to attach to the jig head to when there is pike about? I would use a wire trace but I’m not sure wether or not it scares the perch, any ideas?

hi predator, i use a wire trace called knot 2 kinky, it's a titanium trace wire and the thinnest i could find was 6lb breaking strain, that might seem a little light but on an ultra light rod it's more than enough. it's not ideal and the fluoro is better for perch but it's the best option i've found if there are a lot of pike around👍

hi james, i'm a big fan of white and chartreuse (it's a kind of luminous green colour and very bright) in coloured water, there's not much visibility so to make use of what little there is I use those two colours👍 in clear water I prefer something more natural so a lure with a bit of black and maybe some silver flecks to imitate a roach or some blue and/or purple flecks to imitate a gudgeon👍

Does anyone know a good micro jig fishing setup ? I’ve been told I’m looking for a medium light 7 ft pole with low casting weight paired with a 1000 size reel; is this correct ? And if so could I get any recommendations on a combo that’s good value for money? I’d like to spend max of £100 for the rod, reel, line and some jig heads; I know this isn’t a huge budget and I prob sound like a idiot but I’d love to try this type of fishing. hi keydan, yes the advice you've had is correct, have a look at the hto rockfish rods, you want the one rated 0.5g-7g for micro jigging, couple it with a 1000 size daiwa ninja reel, you should be able to find both online for less than £40 each, you can find braid cheap on ebay and try agm lures for the jig heads and lures. you could also check out the facebook fishing tackle selling groups and buy a second hand setup, it won't be new but you'll get more for your money. it will be a tight squeeze doing it for £100👍

Mark Carp Yeah I’m just excited to try jig fishing, ive been fishing on and off since I was young with my nan; but we would always float fish, ive found a bunch of cheap combos on anglingdirect, there’s a few nice ones for the £80 mark and one I was looking at like the Shakespeare agility lrf that is only 30 lol seems abit too cheap.. I’m probably going to stick to your suggestion with the rockfish and the daiwa ninja 1000 (maybe the fox rage prism), I’ve orderd a bunch of the suggested soft baits in the video ranging from 1.5”-2.5” and got some jig heads ranging 1-3G for cheap on eBay. I’m sure I’ll be catching some fish on the UK canals in no time!.. thanks for the help (look forward to more jig fishing videos!)
