Yup thinking about it right now ! I am a fly fisher and have been for a good few years but local waters to Warrington are all about 45mins drive and either stocking is light or they have been pricked a few times and it seems to be getting harder to have a few pulls than it used to be . I used go spinning for pike 30 years ago but things appear to have moved on and with canals being local ( LYMM ) perhaps I think it may be worth the investment to supplement my fix 👍😂🎣 . hi mustafa, the short answer is no, it's a specialist rig for predators like pike and perch. I know carp will chase fry now and again but it's not really a very good method for catching them. hi Ronnie, the hook i'm using in this video is a size 6, for dropshot with small lures of 2" or less a 6 or an 8 is perfect mate👍 I personally wouldn't use a 5 turn water knot, in this dropshot video you've commented on i'm using a grinner knot on either side of the spinshot hook, if you don't have a spinshot just use a palomar knot instead, these are both tied with fluorocarbon and the fluoro is attached to the braid with a 'shock leader knot'. All the knots are on this channel mate, just bring up a list of all the videos and have a look for them👍

Do you have to use fluro on the bottom swivel ?
@MarkCarp5 жыл бұрын
you don't need to use the rig with fluoro at all Stephen, before fluoro came along it was mono like maxima or even a wire uptrace if you were dropshotting for pike. having used it both ways there's no way i'm going back to mono, the fluoro wins hands down, it gets you a lot more bites, you can use mono below the swivel if you want but I wouldn't expect to get as many bites as a full fluoro rig👍🎣
@stephenstocks10745 жыл бұрын
Mark Carp thank you for you time in answering my question it’s just I have trouble with the dropshot weight snapping the bottom line when moving it about
@MarkCarp5 жыл бұрын
I know exactly what you mean Stephen, I've had the same problem myself, that's why I switched to the spinshot hook in the video because it's easier to change out without changing the whole rig. i'd still stick to fluoro though, if necessary you could use a higher breaking strain for the bottom section, the advantages of a line that's pretty much invisible to fish far outweigh having to do a re-tie now and again. it is a bit on the brittle side though, I just try and take care when moving the weight and try to get a few sessions out of it👍 the other thing you can do is tie up a few rigs ready and keep them in a wallet ready to use, that should help minimise the time it takes to change.

@mraoe5 жыл бұрын
Hello, do you find pike a problem when dropshotting, or is the fluorocarbon fine?
@MarkCarp5 жыл бұрын
hi mate, I filmed this video on a stretch of canal not known for pike so I was happy with fluorocarbon but pike can be a problem, if your water has a lot of them i'd recommend using an up-trace, that's the section of line between the drop shot hook and your braided main line, just replace that section with a wire trace to be on the safe side👍
@mraoe5 жыл бұрын
@@MarkCarp Thanks for the rapid response, this is all new to me as i usually just coarse fish. Not too sure about the pike but i heard there's zander present but i'd imagine i could get away with fluoro for them.
@MarkCarp5 жыл бұрын
I've no zander in my neck of the woods, they simply haven't spread far enough north yet so I've no experience of fishing for them but yes, I reckon i'd be happy with fluorocarbon for them, I know a few lure anglers who catch them regularly and they use fluoro👍
@RustyShackleford664 жыл бұрын
I've heard people say that when you catch perch on the canal, you should keep them at the side in your landing net until you've milked the area dry, so the others don't get spooked. Do you find this to be the case?
@MarkCarp4 жыл бұрын
yes that's true mate, i have another video on this channel called jig fishing for beginners and i do exactly that. perch are a shoal fish and if you're staying in the same area definitely put them in a landing net or keep net in the edge. its the same for all shoaling fish, bream, chub, roach etc, you'll catch more if you retain them in a keepnet👍
@user-we9uy1nw6w4 жыл бұрын
I've heard that's extremely damaging to the fish because they can have trouble finding their shoal again
@MarkCarp4 жыл бұрын
@@user-we9uy1nw6w you are catching and releasing them from/in the same area mate, that's why you hold them in the first place, because you'll be putting them straight back into the remaining shoal and spooking them, whoever told you that, you should stop listening to them😉

@@MarkCarp shoals move, perch especially! I’d rather catch a couple less perch than run the risk damaging the shoal it self.
@MarkCarp4 жыл бұрын
@@user-we9uy1nw6w that's entirely up to you mate, i'm not sure about 'perch especially', shoals do move now and again but in my experience they stay in the same place more often than not. i find the same shoals in the same swims every year, year after year as do my lure fishing mates, finding those swims is a major part of our tactics👍

@MarkCarp5 жыл бұрын
hi dan, yes you can do dropshotting any time you want, in fact it's more a summer thing, because its warmer and the fish are more willing to chase a lure, you catch a lot more in summer than in winter, on average i'd say 3 to 4 times more fish in summer than in winter. @MarkCarp6 жыл бұрын
not much in the way of similarity between a zig and the drop shot paul, apart from the fact that you fish your baits off the bottom, drop shot is quite unique, it allows you an awful lot of control when it comes to how close to the bottom you work the lure, you set the distance from the weight to the lure so you can keep it in a tight range, its a great rig for fishing round structures because you can slow your retrieve right down and literally leave the lure in the same place and just twitch it👍

I see a fair amount of anglers concerned about fish taking and not knowing they've gotten a bite with perch. The perch around my parts must be different because they snatch and run with it and immediately set themselves on the drop shot rig and you know they've taken the bait immediately. They also have a habit of taking the moment you hit the water or not at all.
@MarkCarp5 жыл бұрын
I've had it all mate, taking on the drop, following a lure in and snatching it at the last second, on some days they've been so finicky you have to leave the lure static to get a bite and on others they'll be super aggressive and hit everything. one thing I've noticed if they are under pressure and have been fished for regularly, I seem to get a few bites very early in the session then it dies pretty quickly and it's time to move on. if I suspect a bite but i'm not sure I usually leave the lure static for 10 seconds or so before restarting the retrieve, sometimes they'll take it static, others they'll hit it when it starts moving again and sometimes they just won't entertain it👍😁
