Jigged Guides Choice Hares Ear - Great Swinging Fly - McFly Angler Nymph Fly Tying Tutorials

Guides choice hares ears are in my opinion one of the best summer months swinging flies. It mimics a caddis emerging perfectly, Its got just the right amount of flash to get the fish's attention, the movement with the soft hackle legs is amazing, and I jig it so it won't get caught on the bottom while starting my swing. I like fishing these in riffles, casting down stream about 60 degrees and letting it swing down. If no bites, take a step down and repeat. This will allow you to cover lots of water and catch more fish especially in the summer.
In the spring, summer and fall, caddis hatches start popping off. Caddis provide a little more food for trout in one bite than just midges. Many caddis can get large, some are smaller though. But all of the caddis species will start swimming and floating upward towards the surface to be able to emerge into their final winged form. This process happens very quickly, and therefor the swinging motion of the fly will entice a trout to strike.
These are fairly easy to tie, and you can probably tie around 10-15 per hour and fill a box in just a couple hours. Tie them in different color shades as well. Ive been known to use olive dubbing for the body, and also orange. Also you can use a hot spot or no hot spot. Up to you. Enjoy, and I hope this helps you all catch more fish!

Nice one. I’d use it as a bottom bouncer on a tight line as a single fly with no trailer. This fly would be great in the fast current streams I fish in the Sierras where you may only get a two foot drift and need to get the fly down to the fish and I hate using split shot. That’s exactly how I fish it also! I swing it through riffles. Cast 60degrees down stream, then swing it till tight. Wait a sec, then take a step down stream and repeat. Good searching pattern and technique

@@McFlyAngler the ironic thing is i drive a 2000 suburban all blacked out and we call it .....the flying dutchman! Lol im looking for a variation of a craft fur minnow for trout fishing western and central pa. Years ago i was at a sports expo and a guy was tying these up and ofcourse i only bought one. 🙄 it turned out tobe the biggest rip lipping maching in my box. I dont tie and ive asked guys to make me some but theyve never duplicated it just right. It is similar to your squishy minnow but only like 1 1/4" long on maybe a size 8 streamer hook. Id love to get it copied and some variations in other colors and sized.
