About 2 months ago I commented on one of your older videos and you replied pretty instantlynable to answer my questions. Today I tied my first flies following your rabbit zonker crayfish tutorial and I just wanted to take a second to say thanks for everything you do for beginners such as myself who want to try a different type of fishing than with spinning and casting gear. My first two flies are ugly little things but this is only the beginning and I'm excited to follow along and grow over time. Thanks my friend

Thank you for the nice comment! Yeah your first few flies will always be a little funky looking, that’s ok! Go fish with them, I bet you might get a fish! Welcome to the world of tying friend, you will enjoy it. Just keep practicing and you will get the hang of it and be able to tie super nice looking flies soon.

Kind of cool to discover such an enthusiastic fly fishing community in Central and South Texas. Cool tying video, gonna try this pattern and see if I can fool some bass and redhorse in the rivers around Austin.

Yeah it’s amazing how fly fishing has even come here huh? Let me know how this fly works for ya. It’s a good pattern from a inventive tier who is very popular around these parts.

This fly was suggested by about 50 of my subs though long before I went to the shop. Haha! But yeah I got the materials from there that I needed for sure! Awesome shop, lots of selection. Actually one of the nicest I’ve ever been to.

@@McFlyAngler it's a staple fly down here for sure. I just saw the silli leg package and said hey that logo looks familiar

Ha right!? Yeah this one and the llano bug we’re by far the most suggested after my move to Texas. All my subs from this area were like dude, tie the Rio getter! Lol! Granted I think I did it a little different than the originator, but it works... As for the shop, yeah man, the materials were mostly purchased there, well the ones I didn’t have.

Nice fly Shawn and it looks like about a 6 or 7 minute tie too. Keep up the good work.
@McFlyAngler5 жыл бұрын
Yeah it’s quick for sure. Honestly I can bust these out maybe quicker than that even. Matt Bennett was the creator of the fly and, I’m sure some of the reason for the success of this fly is how simple and easy it is to tie.

I've been trying to peg what this imitates..some kind of craw-fish?
@KillerFuzzOutdoors5 жыл бұрын
Dragonfly nymphs and aquatic insects, also I think minnow as well as just an agitator.
@McFlyAngler5 жыл бұрын
I agree with killer fuzz. For sure a dragonfly nymph. Look them up Jason, they are big and juicy, perfect snack for fish. However not everything that fish bite has to perfectly mimic their forage. Not too many fish are eating bright chartreuse and hot pink colored fish.. haha! But for some reason it generates strikes. Many times it’s the action of how something moves, and this moves perfectly for small panfish type fish. Darting and then a drop, seems to make the panfish go crazy!

Oh for sure. So the originator of this fly said he ties this larger very often. And that it seems to do very well larger. Now, I am not sure if he has gone all the way up to a 1/0, but maybe...

I didn't see your reply until after I made mine. Totally agree though, I was thinking more like a 6 or 8.
@McFlyAngler5 жыл бұрын
Yes Chris, I think a size 8 is exactly what he tied this in on his video, also he used a streamer hook. Go check his video out, it’s linked in the description section. You can see what he used for it. A size 6 I’m sure would be perfect, especially for bass and carp! :).

I'll give it a try, this creek I have has tons of them all adult size but never got them to bite anything I highly doubt they would go for this but will give it a shot. Only see them peck the snails off the rocks
@McFlyAngler5 жыл бұрын
Wellll, I’ve seen it work on them, just maybe not at your creek. Who knows. I did find out from Matt Bennett that they tend to bite things off the bottom, and will play with it more or less, so you gotta keep the legs short, and the tail short also.
@johnnylightning14915 жыл бұрын
Not to be a smart alec but why don't you tie a fly that looks like a snail? There's a few patterns out there if you search for them. I found 2 in about 30 seconds.
@McFlyAngler5 жыл бұрын
No that’s not being a smart Alec at all. Good suggestion! Yeah man, tie a snail! They can easily be done with foam.

Rios where I am are weird...sometimes you have to drop it near them and be patient as hell...other times you drop it near them and as soon as it hits the water they smash it.

@@McFlyAngler Ordered yesterday so might be a little while before I get it. I got the ibt with a 5/6 armor black with alpha fly line. No 5 wt so I got 6 wt and some flys. I'll tell you when I get it how I like it. The bluegill will eat micro floting crankbaits just sitting still so should be easy to catch them on dry flys. Had a swarm at flying ants fall on the pond I fish about 1,000 to 10,000 (migrating maybe?) it was the fist time I saw that happen. The pond lit up with topwater like it was white bass on a school of shad. Also I watched a vid of your top 3 versital trout flys, and I got all of them by just randomly picking them because they looked like they would work. So thanks for starting my fly fishing adventures, and tight lines! -Mavrik (ps. I'm on mobile sorry about the speratic sentences)
@McFlyAngler5 жыл бұрын
I’m glad to help! So a 6wt might be a little heavy for bluegill. I mean it will work, but you might not feel them fighting much. But it is perfect for bass and what not. Good luck and let me know what more I can help with.

Is this not a sparsely tied back stabber.
@McFlyAnglerАй бұрын
No, I’d say it’s quite different. In fact the back stabber is closer to a crazy Charlie than this rio getter is to a back stabber in my opinion. But either way, there really is nothing new under the sun. Many flies resemble each other, different names for each come out to define the specific difference of either material used, colors, sparse or densely tied, etc.
