The highest level of judo is to internalize the fundamental principles of "maximum efficiency" and "mutual welfare and benefit" in all aspects of one's daily life; physical, mental and spiritual.

Before judo came into my life in my mid-20s, I was just partying, not really doing anything with my life and after I found the love of my life, started a family, started a career in EMS as a firefighter Paramedic working towards becoming a flight medic then PA. NONE of it would have been possible if I didn't get on the mat that first time.

As I was taught by the U.S.J.A. (United States Judo Association): Dr. Jigoro Kano emphasized: Maximum Efficiency with Minimum Effort. And, Mutual Benefit welfare and Welfare. Those are what Kodokan Judo are all about!! Self defense is secondary, but very important.

This is so important to highlight! One of the most unique things about judo is that its founder so strongly envisioned a martial art that was not only for fighting or sport but for education and service to society. Not every martial art can say that. American Kenpo, BJJ, boxing, etc ... all great martial arts/sports, but can't claim that their founders explicitly planned for the style to integrate into educational systems. Toyama Sensei, considered the father of Shudokan style Karate, was also like this, both a martial artist and an educator. Kano Sensei had such an innovative social vision, to pacify old killing techniques for a modern age, to create both a sport and a means of education, and even to introduce the dogi, where all who train together are essentially of equal status in the dojo, differentiated only by belt rank, irrespective of their usual differences in social class in anywhere else in society. Rich and poor could be more equal in a sense when in the dojo. Forgive me if I'm simplifying the real history. I am only pointing out that this is a major weakness of most martial arts today ... not studying education and pedagogy itself, or considering the social meaning of the martial arts. The Jesuits have long had a great educational philosophy, seeing that their goal was to educate students in virtue and excellence in their areas of study, but more importantly to form the "whole person" and to "educate the soul," so as to produce men and women who would be "for others" in service to society. The gifts and talents of students were meant to be used for the common good, not just individual gain. Likewise Paulo Freire's Critical Pedagogy would challenge educators to see themselves as co-learners along with students, posing questions more than storing "data" into students, and helping students to integrate their learning into a conscientization of their larger social context. Among martial arts styles, Kano is one of the few who seemed to explicitly talk about the higher purpose of his art being for service to society, not just the individual gain of winning competitions. Many elite athletes suffer so much depression after retirement because their whole life's energies had been aimed at their own accomplishments for so long, and they came to identify their whole sense of "self" with the sport itself, and suffering always comes from seeing something as your "self" that is not really your "self." If instead one has a greater sense of purpose in life, to serve others, to serve society in whatever way they can, then they have an Ikigai, a reason to get out of bed every morning, for their whole life a guiding sense of purpose and resolve.

A Sensei can (and should) use the terms of biology, physics, geometry and psychology while teaching Judo. Therefore teaching those sciences themselves while teaching technique. Martial arts are also martial sciences.

the main thing is it brings people together, especially men. it encourages male competitiveness and getting young men into the experience of losing and all the emotions that go with it. supposable younger people today can't cope with stress or losing because they've been sheltered from it.

While it may seem that the highest level of Judo is through competition, it's worth noting that Kano himself was not an international level competitor. This is important when considering what good things Judoka can contribute to society. Certainly, the use of a young, competitive Judo player who is a medical practitioner is one example, I would also place emphasis on those who don't apply themselves through sport competition exclusively and yet still make a great impact socially. Kano wanted his students to compete as a progressive tool, but hardly as an end unto itself. Rather, the overarching atmosphere of Judo has historically been coupled with academics.

I just want to say, that Medicine is not as selfless as you seem to think it is. I remember when I first started studying medicine, not all, but many were in it for the financial gain, for the social prestige gain (since many people seem to think they are saints), but let me tell you something, they are just as sinful, if not more so, than us. (especially because of all the egos!) So maybe, they do need to do some judo/ jiu jitsu to get radically humbled!

I've trained Daito Ryu and it's very effective, efficient and useful in unarmed self defense and weapon retention. Both Daito Ryu and Judo would serve police officers very well. Officer Berney Lao used Daito Ryu for many years as a police officer in California.

@@adobo1976 Judo is divided into 4: entertainment (sport); physical education (healthy development of the body); a tool for intellectual and moral development and also a martial art. @adobo19767 ай бұрын
@@ricardokerscher Nope, My kids study Judo because It's a sport derived from a Martial Art. I study Nagai Ryu Ju Jitsu which is the martial art that Kano derived the sport of Judo from. Originally Kano called his school the Kano School of Ju Jitsu and only later changed it to the Kano school of Judo after he developed the sport of Judo and wanted to distinguish it from Ju Jitsu. Judo will always be a subset of Ju Jitsu and therefore the highest level of it wil will be Ju Jitsu. Keep playing your game. Do you think Kano Stopped studying Ju Jitsu after he created Judo? My school's Ju Jitsu comes directly from him as do most modern schools.
@ricardokerscher7 ай бұрын
@@adobo1976 My game? What kind of drugs do you use? What I reported above comes from the work of Jigoro Kano, they are not my thoughts. Jigoro Kano NEVER developed Judo as a sport, this happened without his knowledge, especially after his death. You are completely wrong, Judo is MUCH more than jūjutsu... jūjutsu is just a part of Judo, that is, Judo as a martial art, jūjutsu is JUST a martial art, Judo is much more as I reported above. "Nagai Ryu Ju Jitsu"? Kano derived Judo from TenjinShin'yō ryū and Kitō ryū and NEVER called Judo the "Kano School of Ju Jitsu". Kano distinguished Judo (since its creation in 1882) from the ancient schools of jūjutsu because it is a tool of physical education and moral and intellectual development (in addition to an improved martial art of the ancient schools), and not as a sport. Kano felt that Judo competitions (as a sport) distorted the martial nature of Judo. It is clear that Kano never stopped studying jūjutsu as he was always a part of Judo. Before talking about a topic, I recommend that you study it.
