This video discusses the life of Jigor Kano, from beginning to end, but not as a martial artist but as an educator and his contribution to the internationalization of sports in Japan and education in general.

Kano kept Jujitsu alive in my opinion because by the time he was around Yawara (Jujitsu) was not viewed very positively in the public. By him turning it into a form of physical education, character development as well as an art that has valid self defense applications which are centered around throwing, pinning, chokes and locks to large joints (elbow, shoulder, knee etc) he was able to change the public’s perspective on what was once a very brutal battlefield art (which he did preserve aspects of in some katas at the Dan levels). It’s a fairly safe assumption to say that without Judo, Jiujitsu might have almost completely disappeared other than in very small groups of practitioners. What I see happening more and more now in days are practitioners of Judo and Aikido wanting to find a legitimate teacher of Jujitsu or Diato Ryu so they can have more well rounded skills but more importantly they can understand where the technical aspects of their arts came from. Knowing the mother art will make you better.

I have an idea for a piece(we all really LOVE your content pls keep doing it) Did you know Mitsuyo Maeda's "Judo" academy in belem brazil is STILL in operation and is run by his descendants and student's lineage from 1900s to today, yet the Gracies never mention that and the Gracies also talk like Maeda taught them then dissapeared when in fact his Judo club never stop and his techniques are still being taught in Brazil today. lol www.bjjheroes.com/bjj-news/seeds-of-mitsuyo-maeda

I've practiced judo just about a year at childhood, something that I now regret. By the other hand I'm happy to have my 9year old daughter training judô, and she is loving It, especially ne waza! We were Lucky to have found a dojo ran by two Senseis who teach the philosophical values of judô! And what great Man Kano was!

I have been training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for the last four and a half years, six years total studying and training but I took a year and a half off due to Covid-19 when everything got shut down. I am now starting to get into Judo because I feel the more and more I train BJJ, the more I realize that I never want to ever fight someone on the ground and in the streets outside of the mats. I would much rather throw or trip them and them end the altercation ASAP as grappling in itself does require quite a bit of effort, especially if they are much bigger and stronger than I am ( I am only 5'5, 135lbs., small framed and strong but very thin). I find Jigoro Kano's history both fascinating and inspiring!

Kano and many other judo practitioners were in opposition to Japan's involvement in WWII as members of the axis. The circumstances of his death are questioned by some because of that.

At 8:20, Kanou was the principal of Tokyo Koutou Shihan Gakkou (Tokyo High Class Teachers School which later became Tokyo University of Education (1949-1978) , and then integrated with University of Tsukuba)) from 1893 to 1918, which was Japan's first national vocational college for producing elementary school teachers and middle school teachers. His position was equivalent to today's president of University of Tsukuba. In those days, the distribution of education programs (elementary school, middle school, high school, university) was 6-5-3-3, in this order, which differs from today's 6-3-3-4. Takushoku University Preparatory Division that Kimura attended was the high school program (3 years) connected to the degree programs of Takushoku University. Kanou entered Tokyo Kaisei School (the government-designated supreme elite high school), which was one of the predecessors of Tokyo Imperial University. At Tokyo Kaisei School, all the instructors were foreigners. Upon entrance to the school, students learn English, German, and French in the language program (3 to 4 years) to prepare them for specialization programs: Law, Chemistry, an Engineering were taught in English, Mining was taught in German, and General Art was taught in French. In 1877 Apr, Tokyo Kaisei School was integrated with Tokyo Medical School to form Tokyo Imperial University (the first university in Japan having the same structure as universities in Europe and US) comprised of Colleges of Law, Science, Humanities, and Medicine. At Tokyo Imperial University, he learned politics, economics, philosophy, ethics, and aesthetics from Ernest Fenollosa. He was a graduate of the supreme elite university where the language of instruction was English. This explains his proficiency in English. Ōno Shōhei entered Tenri University, which is famous for sports, but is academically a D-rank university. His major was budo. He earned a master's degree in budo for studies of Oo-sotogari in 2019 Mar. Unlike Kanou who received the entire university education in English, Ōno never took a course taught in English. This explains why he can't handle an interview in English.

I put it to you that jigoro Kano is the most influential person ever in the martial arts before him they didn't have a belt system he also influenced karate which is why we have geese and belts today although I have to say belt system the martial arts could have done without it too many people are just chasing belts regardless of the discipline and they spend less time on understanding and getting f****** good at the discipline

I wonder if Kano was influenced by the sokol movement? The philosophical goals of Judo are similar in intent and spirit. Judo definitely impacted the west early on.
