Jill’s Story: Accelerated Nursing School as a Mom

If you’ve ever wondered if it’s possible to go back to accelerated nursing school as a mom, Jill is proof positive that it is.
While she began her career in human resources more than a decade ago, she says she “always felt something was missing.”
“I always had a real true love for the medical field, and that had always been in the back of my mind,” she says. “I always thought if I could do my life over again, I would just do something in the medical field. It finally hit me, why do you have to do your life over again? Why can’t you just do something different now?”
So the mom of two began her search of Florida nursing programs, ultimately deciding to enroll in Utica College’s Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN) program.
What ultimately led her to that choice?
Flexibility
“Given that I have two kids, I wanted something that had an online portion,” she says. “Utica definitely fit that for me.”
Utica ABSN’s online learning platform gives students some latitude over where and when they choose to complete the nursing theory portion of their coursework. Students then apply knowledge gained in this portion of the program to the hands-on labs at our ABSN program site and clinical rotations.
Speed.
Jill didn’t want to spend more time going to nursing school as a mom than necessary. Utica’s 16-month ABSN program was a perfect fit for her in that regard.
While she admits some semesters were harder than others due to the accelerated nature of the program, she found staying organized, and on top of her studies helped her stay successful in nursing school.
“It’s definitely something you can manage with having a family and life outside of school,” she says.
