I have many thoughts seeing this. My first is that Jill ALWAYS bombed summer and fall international comps (see 87 olympical festival, 88 skate canada, the disastrous 89 skate america ). She always skated better at Nationals and Worlds when she was training hard to peak. Having said that, it was a pipe dream to try and come back after injury after the US swept the world medals without her. Figures were gone and she had 3 different triples, none reliable under pressure. I never saw or read about her sectionals/regionals programs, but she clearly made the right call retiring.

The first song is "Once Upon A Time" by Yanni. It's a shame her competitive career virtually ended here. I always thought she had great style (posture and stroking technique) with great spins and charisma.

That's tough to watch. There was definitely a changing of the guard in the 1990-91 season.

@nondescriptnyc yeah, the slow section is the mermaid and the first song was on a different one of his CDs, but the peice she used was written by him especially for her.

its was an original composition by Yanni that her wrote for her.

I don't know if she could have competed against the triple jumpers in Albertville anyway... but it's a shame her injuries got the best of her. I hope she's doing better.
@barkingtree8816 жыл бұрын
Well maybe... she did have a triple flip, and if she could have done that in the short and long program then she'd be in it. The ladies fell all over the place in Albertville.
@MissFit2916 жыл бұрын
Oh, the days when all you heard in the rink was Yanni.... The program is lacking in many aspects - musically and choreographically. I think it was a huge step back from her previous 3 LPs. But as 1991 Worlds showed, you have to have 5 different triples. She knew she was done. At least she could blame it on the ankle injury.
@hairbrush8116 жыл бұрын
I agree. Had she skated a clean short program in Albertville she could have been 3rd in the short behind Kristi and Nancy. Then in the long she could have been 3rd behind Kristi and Midori, and easily over Nancy's bad performance. The bronze medal in Albertville definitely could have been hers had she stayed healthy.

I just love watching this video. Not because I love to watch her skate but to see her scores..her true scores without the pointless compulsories..it just shows how badly she sucks and how lucky she was when she won those national titles and world title...

She just needed to add a triple loop and Lutz jumps and be more confident with her jumps.

She wouldn’t even had medaled at Nationals in 1991. Losing figures really weeded out a bunch of skaters didn’t it.

I miss FIGURES. They were about edge control, precision and nerves under pressure. They also made for great Free skating. Amateur Skating used to be a 3 part event. Nowadays.. it's just a jumping bean Competition.

There’s no way in hell that she’d make the 1992 Olympics. She doesn’t have the triple Lutz double toe that most skaters had and she always choked under pressure.

She was a lovely skater of course she didnt always skate well she ABSOLUTLEY would have made the team for sure EVEN with the inconsistensies sorry!
@CarloChapelle3 ай бұрын
@@grantnoroyan4083 For the 1992? Sorry but she won’t make the team. Nancy, Tonya & Kristi all had the complete package of athleticism and artistry that Jill didn’t. Jill wasn’t even consistent with her Triple Flip in 1991 (post surgery). There’s no way that she’d master the triple Lutz / double toe to be even competitive in the shorts. And she knew it. Thus, the early retirement.

@@CarloChapelle LOL with all due respect how long have you been involved in skating???? diane deleau was 2nd to dorothy hamill in 1976 after successfully landing a triple toe loop CLEAN!!!! she was 2nd dorothy was 1st with no triples!!!!! one jump does not make a difference sorry and she had a triple flip solid and a salchow toe loop and loop in practice so sorry do not agree
@CarloChapelle3 ай бұрын
@@grantnoroyan4083 It’s not how long but common sense. Do you think it’s just the shorts that she’s going to have trouble with? She can’t even do a clean free skate. And her strongest element (school figures) was abolished. You’re a fan and is having wishful thinking. Even if she were to qualify the Olympics body for the US wouldn’t pick her. She buckles under pressure and that’s a fact. In Calgary, when school figures was still part of the competition she couldn’t take advantage of it. In all probability she won’t be able to handle the new generation of Americans in the 1992 Nationals. And she’s wise to know that. In fact she was quoted as saying that she was willing to compete if the technical rules would be changed like limiting the number of triple jumps (or something to that effect). Right there, by wishing that the rules be altered to accommodate her technical limitations, you know she doesn’t have it in her to up the ante. Lastly, judging has become more biased against skaters with low technical content by 1991 forward. Prime example was Laetitia Hubert of France. She did a mistake free short program and was more graceful than Surya and Midori. But she still didn’t score ahead of those two because she had a lower technical difficulty compared to those two. That’s just facts. That’s why Jill didn’t even pursue it. She knew she was done.

@@CarloChapelle LOL common sense is a spectrum you said she wouldnt have made an olympic team in 92 i say she would have!!!! the question was never presented was she good enough or consistent enough etc it was SHE NEVER WOULD HAVE MADE AN OLYMPIC TEAM IN 92 and i disagree if you want to know the main reason behind her deciding to retire it was 2 things MAINLY her coach carlo fassi had moved and she felt lost and the other reason was that she felt us figure skating was pushing yamaguchi and she felt left behind that NEVER meant she wasnt good enough that NEVER meant she wouldnt have made it ..........the timing was off with her main coach leaving the country etc so not attacking you however before people start BASHING a talented skater they need to know the TRUE story behind the issues! main point you are wrong and misled take care!
