Chris Rock is amazing for keeping his sanity that night. He was slapped by an ego maniac infront of the whole world but he had the strength to stand strong and continue. I was a fan of Will Smith before that and was thrilled for his Oscar but after that slap, I felt embarrassed for ever liking such a loser character. As Jim Carrey said, seeing the hollywood give him a standing ovation was absolutely sickening.

He has freedom of speech that is something Will should have just talked to him about on the commercial break it's like Will just wanted the attention that he was defending her then he realized how negative that attention was he should have been taken out for assault right away like Jim Carry said it took away everyone else's moment and he hit him over just words that were not even bad words

Hollywood is no more or less screwed up than any other group of that size & general income level. Probably less so in some ways, because they’re very conscious of their careers & how they appear in the press. Take a bunch of millionaires that don’t have a close focus on them & I can guarantee someone had slapped someone else, lol. The Majestic was very much trying too hard to be a dramatic actor, but The Truman Show was the real Jim Carrey movie because he was funny and real and you couldn't watch it and not feel for Truman and his forced life. I understand the impulse, but that doesn't make it okay to slap someone for making a joke at your (or your spouse's) expense. That's part of being a public figure. Well the Golden Globe Committee always passed him over too, despite Carrey's excellent dramatic roles (which he likely should have won multiple awards for) because he was caricatured and stereotyped as a "comedian not an actor". The dude has serious acting chops but was always denied a chance for an award because the people who run the show have incredibly superficial and biased attitudes towards the art that is acting. It's like preening judges in many sports who have zero idea about the sport itself, or what makes a good competitor, and score based on random shit (like how a female gymnast looks or incredibly specific technical form that doesn't really demonstrate the essence of gymnastics, which is nigh superhuman strength, flexibility, and coordination).

Honestly i think most people thought it was staged when it happened. I dont think it was a standing ovation because they are happy chris got assaulted. People in the crowd probably thought it was fake…it is hollywood after all

I’m also convinced people thought it was staged. To be honest, I think that’s a rational assumption to make at first, since it’s just looked too strange to be real.

Why Will Smith was not arrested for assault on the spot is AMAZING to me. We live in an upside-down INSANE world now.

Everyone thought it was part of some planned skit between them. That's why nothing was done. Chris Rock laughing it off didn't help. Had he reacted differently and used the mic to call for security then I think everyone there would have taken it seriously. It wasn't until a few days after that people started to realise it was a real assault.

Nobody was watching anyway. The slap is a symptom of hollywood being 'over'. Not the cause. I'd eat my keyboard if that wasn't scripted... by a bad hollywood writer who's watched too much Maury.
