The idea of the double cross at Survivor Series 1997 came from Jim Cornette. But Corny didn't suggest it because he hated Bret. If any thing, he hated Shawn and respected Bret. Jim Cornette suggested the idea because he's fed up with everyone in Connecticut, he's gaining weight, he's depressed, he's lost his patience with the WWF Creative, and no one can figure out "what are we going to do" because Bret doesn't want to do business with Shawn because Shawn's a prick. Cornette basically, because no one can think of anything else, throws his hands up in the air tells Vince to just double cross Bret. No matter what Russo or HHH or anyone else says, the idea of the double cross of Bret Hart at Survivor Series in 1997 came from James E Cornette.

Question: Without the screw job, does WWE win the Monday Night War? No Attitude Era. No blurring of the lines. No Mr McMahon. No Austin crowning at WM14. You could argue it made both WWF and WCW must see TV for a period of time, with Shawn becoming a major heel and Bret given a chance to be the biggest WCW baby face EVER (Which was ruined by WCW). Admittedly Shawn and Bret both had injuries after but I don’t think you can say that’s connected to this match. Both are millionaires, and have a legend that will outlive them because of this match. If only we could have a moment that kickstarted the WWE at the moment....
@SirJoelsuf1

Yes it does. The top guys in WCW were in their mid-late 40s and had like 2 guys to succeed them. It may have taken WWE until 2006 or 2011 and not 2001, but WWE would have still won the Monday Night War.

How do you see Montreal creating the Attitude Era? When it really started way before the term was used you go back to at least the build to Mania 13 when everyone was all pissed off, and really you could even go to the Pillman house incident in late 96 as the first hints of what was coming. Montreal had 0 effect on Austin’s rise and crowning at WM14 if anything it would have been better if Bret stayed since the rumored original plans were for Austin to finally beat Bret and get the belt after a year and a half of losing to him. Blurring the lines was Russo’s booking style so really don’t see it having much effect there either. Mr. McMahon is probably the only thing I’d agree with but who knows if he still played up the Austin is a bad head of the company it could have ended up happening anyway.

Yes. Its often forgotten that Bret wasn't so much defecting as he was being forced out. His contracted was being renaged on at the other end and then they want him to on top of that do job out to someone who had done what Shawn had done (refusing the same, Sunny days) during USA v Canada angle. Baring this in mind makes it at least more reasonable if not outright reasonable.

Well in the documentary Bret says that Vince came back to him and told him he could afford it and wanted him to stay but that he wasn’t satisfied with his creative going forward so he chose to go to WCW. But it is always fair to consider that he wasn’t going to leave until Vince gave the initial push to do so. That said I’ve never thought his stand was reasonable. I get why he felt that way but still think he should’ve lost it. Part of doing business is doing what you’re asked even if you hate the other guy

Sure Jim came up with the idea of the finish just because he was challenged to come up with a scenario that could work, sure he can get angry at himself for it, sure he can hate on Omega, the Bucks, Joey Ryan for everything he perceived as exposing the business, but ultimate if the business IS exposed is none of their fault, not even Jim's himself. It was Vince McMahon that didn't just expose the business, he busted it wide open for everybody to see. So Jim shouldn't be that mad about, since he was getting paid by the same man while he did it.

I honestly wonder why it is that Bret does these kinda docs. This could not have happened to a worse guy. Everyone would have been pissed. But Bret held that grudge for such a long time. It took him so long to get any real closure on it. I get that he's always asked. But he doesn't need to talk about it publicly as much as he does. Your video is probably the most recent video i've seen with a ton of views and likes and you are pretty much on Bret's side. Its really rare to see that in this day and age. A lot of people side over with Vince/HHH/HBK over Bret. Honestly, I am glad you did this video. I am 95% and forever on Bret's side with this debacle.

When Bruce recounted it he says a lot of people offered it up as an option because they were so exasperated at what to do but that Vince just never said they’d be doing it. And Bruce says he doesn’t know who would’ve ever truly been the very first to offer it as an option.

Cornette has aways stated he said to double cross his ass. I believe he had the first idea as he was very adamant that it wasn't Russo. Also the way he rushed out the building puts more legitimacy into it.

The dumb thing about this is that, in hindsight of course, they should have pitched the screwjob as the angle to Bret. He still looks strong. Gets tons of babyface sympathy going in WCW, and Shawn gets massive amounts of heat leading into his angle with Austin, which in turn rockets Austin even higher. If Bret knew about it and agreed, everyone wins.

I so trust cornette more because even he isn't trying say he was a mastermind. He just says that he passed it by vince as a random thing that was said and it was actually used and he honestly was like "oh fuck this i'm out" Because he could easily say he was the mastermind that made the most famous and infamous finish in all of wrestling. I can see cornette getting frustrated, saying some random knowledge he knew and he probably forgot about it until that day and then thought "oh no he isn't going do it" and then it just gets worse and worse for him

Quint Quint yeah but it’s silly to think that they have some screw job finishes the same way as that match ended even tho Ronda is the heel and Becky was the face, it would have made more sense for Charlotte to beat Ronda in a screw job finish
@quintquint5946
@quintquint5946 5 жыл бұрын
@@Dreammaster695 You're silly. Your thinking is silly. Even with the lol. There was no screwjob finish. Ronda didn't have her shoulders down before the ref started his count. The ref made a mistake. Yes, that finish is sometimes used as a work. That's what makes it a good believable worked finish - that it can happen for real. The planned finish was for Ronda to be counted down for 3. It is silly to think Charlotte should have won with a screwjob. lol haha

Completely different. Hogan had his shoulder up at 2. Ronda had her shoulder up at 1 and down for 2 and 3.

It's unfortunate that this happened to Bret and to this day so many people bring it up to him when he's made peace with it. It's even more unfortunate on how many people try to take responsibility for this. I remember Vince Russo claiming he came up with the idea, then Kenny Bolin from OVW (then developmental territory for WWE) claiming he was the 1 who came up with the idea, Earl Hebner whether storyline or shoot saying he was glad he screwed Bret only for him to say later he believes it was a work and now Cornette claims he came up with the idea
