Love your content man ❤ Few questions/tips: Would a small side handle directly into the side of the blade roughly at half the length help when lifting it? Instead of traditional movements involving arms and wrist can stuffs like rotating the torso or a bit more extensive / precise footwork help moving that thing around?

4:24 In weightlifting, that is called "hitting a plateau" for anyone who is curious. Lots of things can be done to move past plateaus, such as taking an entire week or 2 off without any exercise other than walking, but often using different movements or weights are required; and even then, there is a limit to human capacity.

My suggestions for the second version 1) Significantly heavier pommel, just for the sake of moving the center of mass closer to the handle, it might be out of the budget, but something made out of Tugsten would be an interesting way to keep it small, but Steel might also work. 2) A taper up to 3° and a wider base, maybe up to 30cm or so, but I understand it might be a pain to create without a CNC laser cutter. 3) Perhaps a longer handle too? especially if it's combined with the heavier pommel, something up to 40cm made out of steel would be interesting to see.
@ahmedgouhar4885
@ahmedgouhar4885 6 күн бұрын
The problem with a heavier pommel is that the sword is already very heavy. Yes a pommel would help with the center of mass but you will need at least 2 or 3 kilos of pommel on a sword that's already 6 or 7 kilos. Everything else you said makes sense

@@Pepe-pq3om the problem is that while you make it somewhat easier to wield by doing that, it 1. also reduces the amount of power exerted by the blade, which is its whole selling point, and 2. when not actively swinging it your now lugging around something thats 50% heavier. I had a Samoan friend who practiced with a large, heavy Warhammer. He said there wasn't a sword that could stop the momentum of his swings, the opponent would simply take the hit and be out of the fight. He said the key is to have the heaviest weapon you can swing accurately and practice with it until you are strong enough to use it efficiently. In time you will be a force to be reconned with.

The biggest problem with blocking a giant sword is staying up once you start slowing it down a full force swing could probably lift you up just with the pure torque meaning the recovery time for its wielder is less impactful but that is only if you even make contact with their weapon and they don't just dodge

To reduce the weight, have you considered removing a few hexagonal sections from the center in a honeycomb pattern? As long as you keep far enough away from the edge (and space the honeycombs far enough apart), it should, in theory, maintain most of the core strength while taking away some of the weight (not much, but every little bit helps)
@Kargoneth
@Kargoneth 7 күн бұрын
Indeed. Perforate the center along the length of the blade. Fluting (fullers) that ran the length of the blade would also allow for the retaining of much of the lateral stiffness while reducing the mass, almost like doubly-corrugated cardboard, though once it was bent too far it might simply buckle.
@huldu
@huldu 7 күн бұрын
I was thinking the same thing but also reconsider the base of the sword since an edge at the bottom 20-30% would be pretty "useless" in the first place, perhaps making it more narrow to reduce overall weight while then flare out the size it is now toward the half and above?
@bungeetoons
@bungeetoons 6 күн бұрын
What about reducing the thickness of the guard, it's a big hemisphere right now, so most of it doesn't add to hand protection and support. Plus, any weight you remove from the blade end, you could add to the pommel, atleast until it's balanced.

Then stack all the crazy swords you've tried for comparison down to being so light/weak as to be impractical on the other end.

I'd love to see this sword with a leaf blade design. Also I think you've just given an interesting idea for a games mechanic; if you want to wield a giant sword that does massive damage, you are restricted in the type of armor you can wear, in this case, no pauldrons. Maybe this is already an existing mechanic but no game examples are coming to mind at the moment.

17:33 "I don't really have anything to go against" And then there's me just sitting here thinking that due to having a large enough sword you could throw out standard conventional wisdom and actually incorporate spins. You have a huge sword, if you spin your body to start gaining momentum on the sword again you can start off using the sword itself as a shield to cover your back before whipping it around in a full circle arc to hit your opponent again with a stronger blow. Naturally there's still the same caveat you mentioned just a bit before this about what happens if you miss, but I feel like instead of stopping it you just start redirecting it by spinning the blade. It probably works best to incorporate some halberd techniques, though obviously there's a limitation on 'pole' length.

It reveals a clear advantage of a fighter being taller, because aside from generally having more muscle they will have a much easier time not hitting the ground and can use overall more compact movements while still enjoying a reach advantage. While it's not gonna be Berserk inspired anymore you should try a similar construction sword half less width with steel edge and a guard, same length. It would be maybe 4-4.5Kg ? A Handle and Guard Plate, then an Aluminum Guard Plate and Insert that is the Core and extends up the Middle and is essentially a Sword itself, but with a slot like would be had for Joining a Corner of a Shelf instead of an Edge, then a 5160 Spring Steel Outer Piece that slides over on the sides of the Aluminum inner Piece, but has 2 Plates with Holes so the Pieces could be Bolted together. 1 could put a Spikey Cap Nut over the sticking up Shanks of those Bolts, and those could Double as like a Sword Catch.

The "combos" isn't about killing someone with multiple blows, it's about maintaining momentum because you can't practically swing the sword without it. It also serves as crowd control/aera denial, essentially creation a "f* around and find out" field all around you. It's not that "Guts don't use it because...", IRL it's the only way to use a sword of that kind of size and weight effectively. Also Guts is a manga character, he has superhuman strenght and can use a 100kg 2m sword as if it was a normal longsword. So yeah he's going to cleave through multiple armored people easily. In real life, the 100kg sword is impossible to use, and even with moment the 6kg one isn't cutting through one armored opponent. ALL martial arts involving weapons are about "one shotting" opponents. If a 1-handed sword snipes your sword wielding hand, you're done, if you half-sword stab someone through their visor, they are dead.

Besides adding a profile taper, have you considered using a square cross-section, lattice type structure to cut weight while keeping the strenght, it could be practical and at the same time look really cool.👍

This is so awesome! It's fascinating seeing relatively small-framed people [Hale the Blacksmith - I believe who Shad is mentioning in this video] learning how to maneuver a 40lb 7ft steel dragonslayer faster and faster after just 70 days. I haven't seen the plateau, yet, that Shad mentions... As someone really interested in and following giant sword content, I think the only thing that Shad underserved was how the people who are actually practicing wielding the swords that are 20/40lbs have to completely rethink the form and technique behind it. They have to learn how to leverage with the body and do different footwork to compensate for any recovery and speed deficits. It's not a greatsword or longsword and you can't use it just like one and expect the giant sword to work the same. There's no manual or treatise for it so the learning curve and required conditioning is very great but with a lot of untapped potential. At least that's my opinion and hope! Biggest downside is you can't spar with them really to test out theories, challenges, and ways to get around them, and in that way it's impractical, I concede.

The only way to make Giant Sword vs. Longsword viable at close range, would be for the Giant Sword Fighter to take 1 hand off of the blade, and start throwing punches and kicks; using their giant sword to simply block sword swings at close range (by placing their massive weapon between them and their attacker). Also, we now need a fight scene with Giant Sword vs. Longsword.

@@yetanotherspuart3993It all depends on the weight distribution. The proportions are also what would question if it's functional, or if the sword itself isn't truly possible because of the blade being too heavy to stay sturdy/dense enough not to break itself when truly used to hit something. The handle may be able to distribute the weight right, but like Shad said, it isn't just the sword's weight that makes it seemingly impossible to use. Even Tyranth spoke about it in this video. Thinking outside the box, these videos can help fantasy writers create better books! The more knowledge we have about swords and how they work, the better! A fantasy writer can write a scene where the hero uses a longsword to fight against a villain with a giant sword. At first, the villain has an advantage. But the hero makes a smart move to knock the giant sword to the side. The hero then makes a kill by cutting the villain's neck! This is why we need more sword videos. Many of us have no idea how valuable these videos can be to people!

It would be a fun group-mind exercise to have people submit ideas for you, who have some experience in the field, to weed out the untenable ones and rate the ones that make the cut. And btw, Pretty Hate Machining (the youtube channel) made a Dragonslayer to the specs of the manga. Go watch that if you want to see exactly how impossible it would be to wield… Spoiler: it’s extremely dangerous to lift - with heavy equipment.

You should make the handle longer to gain more leverage. instead of a pommel you could put points in the handle that are weighted like big bead/ball like pommels 2 or 3 should work, this would allow for better grip control on swings and counter balance the sword especially when you give it that taper.

Using crappy swords to test pool noodles vs. tatami mats is rather smart for revealing how much good technique really matters. I have similar thoughts about other skills like driving. If you want to really improve your skills, you can't choose to drive only high agility racing machines like Porsche. You need to spend time in clapped out land yachts that are just as unruly at low speeds and simple maneuvers as the hotrods are when you're pushing them to the bleeding edge of performance.

@@robo5013 Thats why its called innovation. You don't just stop making a weapon becasue its ineffective, you work on it til it works and from what we seen from Screen Tested and Shad; There is a huge plausible outcome that would make this a viable weapon. @robo5013 6 күн бұрын
@ It's never going to become a viable weapon. Do you think swords are going to replace guns? It also can never be a viable weapon if it requires "the right type of person to wield it." A viable weapon is one that anyone can reasonably use. There was innovation in sword design from their very invention and not once were these ridiculously over sized ones even pondered because they would never be useful.

@@robo5013 They still can be made. Again innovation. One stop creating fallacies. This is about swords, not guns. Two a viable weapon doesn't mean anybody can use it. it just means there is a possiblity that it could be used. Three the Zwei and Mont are pretty big weapons themselves if you think about it. Just thinner blade profiles that have mobility and less endlag. Again if made correctly it can be a viable weapon.

I’m picturing a fighting style where simple footwork goes a long way to reduce vulnerability during windups. Back-step after each swing, to try to maintain some distance while that monster is coming back around, then step forward when attacking. Though, footwork may take a lot more practice when you’re swinging a ton of weight around.

The overhead swing isn't reasonably usefull against human enemies but I would wager that it'd be devastating against large fantasy creatures. In Tyranths video we saw how deep this thing penetrated with an overhead swing into a hardwood stump and it nearly split the thing in half. You don't need that kind of power against human enemies but if you have the chance to do that against an Ogre or a dragon while your party distracts the enemy? That is a strike that can just chop of body parts of monstrous creatures.
