Gimmick matches seem to replace the story lines. Spam is the name of the game. Whether it's spamming finishers, cuss words, gimmick matches, new factions, debuts, or buzz words like "dream match", "ppv quality" or "game changer". If they saved them to end a feud or for PPV/TV specials it wouldn't be so blatant tho.

The core problem is that gimmick matches should be treated as extraordinary exceptions to standard ones, and instead they're presented as run-of-the-mill. If a wrestling promotion were going for credibility, then 1 on 1 and 2 on 2 would be emphasized as the baseline standard that all contests are supposed to be. Gimmick matches would then only come about because of unique circumstances and with the idea that there's no way that the issues between these people on the roster can be resolved unless it happens in that fashion. A Texas Death Match should be something where you have public statements by Tony Khan or someone in authority saying they don't want to have it given the serious injury risk, but that the two people involved have proven incapable of adhering to the rules in a standard match, so with great reluctance the match is being sanctioned. Have a scenario where a babyface agrees to not challenge for a title for a year if he can get the heel in cage for the championship match because a major variation like that isn't freely applied. Make the gimmick something that's earned, not given away.
@bobdonda
@bobdonda 2 жыл бұрын
It boggles my mind that AEW doesn't understand this. They seem to add stipulations completely at random lately. Like one day you're going to tune in and it'll be Statlander vs Riho in an Iron Man match for no reason at all with no buildup. Or they might copy the Elimination Chamber in a match with no title on the line with a group of guys who aren't feuding with each other. It's just out of nowhere, for no reason.

@MerelyAFan, The problem with "Booker of the year" $ mark Khan's booking of the talent, is that he starts off every "feud" with gimmick matches & then by the time you got to the PPV, he'd book the talent involved in a regular match which is obviously ILLOGICAL & BACKWARDS BOOKING OF THE TALENT.

I know Jim and Brian didn’t watch it, but oddly enough, Deeb and Shida had the best gimmick match of the night. I would have rather they had an I quit match, but I was just so glad to get Deeb on tv (First tv match since March 4th and she’s their best all around women’s performer). Shida could have done better to sell the knee, but she did a good job and they tried hard to make sense of it. Far more selling in this match than most gimmick matches. I also liked that they didn’t get crazy with the props. No houses made of chairs, no stacked tables. No thumbtacks.

@@Guy4318 Agreed. Every time Deeb used a weapon, it was with a purpose: To destroy Shida’s knee to set up the submission. She took a brief period to inflict pain and rub it in, but then got back down to business. The elimination chamber could be used as good example. When it first got introduced in 2002, I could tell you the ppv, all the participants, and could almost go down to the order they got eliminated. Even in 2003 with Goldberg, or whey they brought it back for New Years Revolution 2005. Ever since 2008, when every year they needed to do both Raw and smackdown elimination chamber by the time it rolled around next year with two more it was already getting out of place. Now it’s literally the title of a pay per view and everyone knows every year we get it. Just watered it down so much

AEW need to promote matches with substance rather than just gimmick matches to get a cheap pop. CM Punk vs MJF fued was great not just because of the storytelling but also because of the matches and the fact that Punk gave his reasoning as to why he wants a dog collar match against MJF and that is to humiliate him and make sure he doesn't try to run away from him. Now if you take the Hardys vs Butcher and the Blade, why the fuck these two teams had this match? They've yet to fued and face each other in other matches yet for some reason they had a tables elimination match which was moronic because even if one guy gets eliminated he doesn't have a reason to go to the back because no DQ, so what's the point of doing an elimination match if there are no consoquences if you stay even if you're eliminated? Shit like that is one of the many things that hurt AEW. They need to include these kind of matches to make sense depending on the fued.
@Kas58223

I think the key problem is that since the Attitude Era, bookers or writers or whoever the creative staff are don't realize the concept of building to the big matches. It can be at a PPV or a TV special or just a big episode of the weekly TV like the Grand Slam shows from last year. But the whole idea of wrestling is you build up interest in a match and then you have it, preferably where you can get a big PPV buyrate or a large gate attendance. This isn't even a wrestling concept. A movie will establish characters and plot and then usually pay off the most exciting scene at the end. TV shows will build up a storyline throughout the season and have the big payoff in the season finale. This is routine storytelling. But instead it's just "let's try this" or "let's try that" in a vain hope that people will keep watching if each episode is full of wild stuff. Or it's just having no patience or attention span and thinking "it would be cool to do this" and thus doing it as soon as possible. But the concept should be having a big show in mind, thinking about what matches to put on it, and then using the weekly show to set up the circumstances where people want to see the matches booked for that big show. Everything should revolve around this goal. In AEW's case the big shows would be the PPVs, the Battle of the Belts specials (which for some dumb reason they've treated as throwaways) and some key Dynamite episodes where the spacing makes sense to not go too many months without something noteworthy happening.

the funny thing is that wwe did crazy random stuff in the 90s and a lot of the attitude era ppvs had zero build up except one or two main event matches, but the reason they had so many people watching was because the characters were strong and the wwe has always been character work over wrestling, if aew is going to continue the gimmick stuff then at least focus on the characters

As bad as WWE is these days, at least they still know to stick to the basics. Take that quick Drew/Sami feud for example. Regular match, Sami ran away. Lumberjack match, Sami got away again. Culminated in a steel cage match and the babyface went over. Simple but effective.

@ChaosSkye

Gimmick matches should be seldom and reserved only for those intense rivalries. A good normal one on one or tag team match is always better while also protecting the wrestlers from needlessly injuring themselves. Love or hate wwe's focused on more traditional matches but atleast they're doing something to avoid their stars from taking unnecessary risk and injuries.

Exactly Punk and MJF nailed this the right way. They had an amazing story, have a normal standard match, continues to further the story which leads to a logical gimmick match. Everyone else has a gimmick match just because

I definitely love gimmick matches, even some being on a regular weekly show every now and then, but overuse of them makes me hate them. Like with WWE, the current era of gimmick matches being ppv names just ruins the match type for me. Taker and triple H end of an era hell in a cell at WRESTLEMANIA: good usage. Seth vs the fiend hell in a cell at hell in a cell: so stupid and other than the whole "what does it take to beat the fiend," there was no real need of this in the feud

There's so many gimmick and 6 man matches....that I literally get stoked over a regular single fall match. 😐 Like...I have no desire or interest to see thumb tacks, ladders, tables, or cages for about a good 12 months in AEW. Nothing more than 2 man tag matches and one fall only for singles. That's it. They're exhausting it that much.

I agreed with the massive bulk of what he said here but what's wrong with a women's street fight? Just have it justified through the booking (which surely it isn't always these days) but as long as it is I see nothing wrong with it. It's not like girls don't fight in the street, you can find so many videos of that easy lol
