God that gives me the funniest image in my head. Now I'm just picturing Dave lecturing hos 8 year old daughter for hours and hours on all this stuff he thinks is wrestling and she just nods and agrees with him cause she wants to get back to her cartoons and by the end he's just proud of himself like "What a genius daughter I have, understanding all my wrestling genius so easily."

Dave actually explained he saw a six star match a once in a generation or decade thing. There is another from All Japan as well that was treated six star. Truth both those were far better than Omega and Okata. Not saying I didn't think the match was bad for them but the golden standard for me will forever be Hart v Austin in 97

The star system should 5 stars. If it gets 5 stars that means it’s an all time great match. If someone else has a much better match than that also becomes an all time great match. I personally never bothered with getting around to watching Ricky steamboat vs Rick flair. But stone cold vs Bret hart is my all time favourite. Does me liking one better than the other make the other worse? Or does it simply mean that I prefer chocolate with peanuts and you prefer chocolate and caramel, but are quite happy with both and I’m sure I’d enjoy Ricky vs ric.

Sort of reminds me about a place I almost worked for. They used a rating system where the employees had to all get 9/10. So I asked what the other numbers mean and I couldn't get a straight answer.. So the rating didn't mean a thing and were pointless apart from making all the employees thinking they were absolutely brilliant at their jobs.

I honestly don't really have a personal rating system. I just think I like something, it sucks, or is just okay. It's good enough for me since I'm easy to please, so most stuff is good. And I honestly can't get into much old 80s wrestling but at the same time, I hate the AEW stuff, so something in the middle is fine as long as the characters and story are interesting. There's a reason why wrestling in the attitude era had more emphasis on personalities over actual "workrate". Also I'm sure fans had "star" ratings for wrestling long before Dave

The Richter scale comparison is asinine on many levels, but I'll touch on "no upper limit" part. While the Richter scale theoretically has no upper limit, there is no fault line on Earth long enough to produce a magnitude 10.0 or higher earthquake. There is also a "practical limit" as no fault line can be greater than the circumference of the Earth (and a fault line that big is practically impossible to form in itself).
@bipolarminddroppings

Any real scientist wouldnt refer to a scale no longer used either. And while a 10 isnt possible on Earth, Neutron Stars have quakes that would be into the thousands or millions on the Richter scale.

Meltzer was good because of his historical knowledge and (generally) accurate reporting, never because of his opinions. He's swung from opinion to opinion over the years and he rarely listens to criticism. His Japan fetish in the late 90s/early 2000s, his "MMA is pro wrestling really guys honest" phase after that. Now it's the PWG/AEW/etc indie style.

The biggest stars of the past 30 years never cared for Meltzer. Hogan, Flair, Taker, Austin, Rock never praised Meltzer for how many stars he gave them, because they never cared for marks. Okada or Tanahashi in NJPW never cared for Meltzer, even tough he gave them alot of 5* matches. Only the Young Fucks, Olivier and Tony "the new Herb Abrams without cocaine and hookers " Khan care for Dave because without him they would be nothing. The Young Fucks were the opening match on NJPW and the moment they wanted to move to the heavyweight division, NJPW said no. For 3 years Oivier got the biggest pushed for a foreign in NJPW and the moment they gave him the title he decided to leave. Meltzer made Young Fucks and Olivier " famous" and they made him relevant.
