Once Shawn left after WMXIV I honestly think Hunter believed he was going to be the next big star, the problem was DX became babyfaces shortly after and the best thing about the group was the New Age Outlaws. Hunter's DX feuded with The Nation led by The Rock, and despite being the heel Rock's charisma and presence always made him look like the bigger star because he was. Bottom line, Hunter could never get over the Rock. As Cornette famously quoted "Triple H was the guy that worked with the guy that drew the money."

Triple H is probably the greatest guy to work with. Not because he makes you better, but because he was always at that certain level you know? He wasn’t a megastar but he was a big star. And knew how to work. It was basically guaranteed to be a good match. Sometimes great but rarely bad or boring

It should be pretty obvious from the start: Hunter hung out with the Kliq because he knew they had pull backstage. Hunter wasn't a party person and he had been jerked around in WCW. I'm sure he learned that anyone, especially the Rock, would take his "spot". Yes, Rock probably got a foot in the door because of who his dad and grandfather were, but Rock earned his spot through hard work and charisma. Hunter got his through politicing.
@DLRX

Indeed, Hunter was just the Kliq's Designated Driver, and I believe he truly thought that after Shawn left following WMXIV that he would be the next big star after Austin, thank God The Rock was his reality check.

Take it a step further, Hunter married exactly the right person to gain power in a Family-Owned Wrestling business. If he was never Stephanie McMahon's husband he and HBK wouldn't be in charge of NXT right now, point blank period. Not to say Steph and HHH aren't truly in love, but who her daddy is certainly didn't hurt his career s'all I'm sayin'.

To know when you’re a megastar, is when you don’t need the belt to stand out. Rock and Austin didn’t need the belt while Trips kinda did. Especially if you see his reign of terror.
@Speedyreedy1218

HHH'S character lived for the title. He said it all the time. He didn't care about fans. He wanted the title and wanted to be hated. Rock and Austin's characters were "the entertainers seeking cheers."

@@Speedyreedy1218lmao ofc you say that even its not true you are a Hunter fan but nah Austin and Rock dont need the belt because they are megastars they can do everything that Vince wants them to do Triple H only got over after he won that title hes always in the midcard section love Triple H tho best heel in ring wrestler of all-time
@Speedyreedy1218
@Speedyreedy1218 10 ай бұрын
@@dxtremecaliber It is true. He was over before he had the title. He was over a little in 95, had some steam in 96 before the Curtain Call punishment (although Intenet fans on message boards ironically started supporting him because of that incident), and once DX started, it was full steam ahead. Not just saying that because I'm an HHH fan. I grew up watching it as it happened. And during the pandemic have recently binge watched WWF programming from 93-09 closely- analyzing and watching his character arc, crowd signs, and reception.

This narrative doesn't make any sense lol. Thriple H was clearly a top 3 heel in the company at that time. So Rock wasn't in his way 😂, if you understand wrestling he needed Rock, and Austin to be great, for him to reach the heights he did as a heel.
