I think the difference you're referring to is to do with the old PPV model. Great example: Royal Rumble entrants. Would it help the Rumble sales if they advertised x was going to return in the match? Probably not, unless you're talking about Rock, Hogan, Austin etc. Will the return on Sunday help the Monday Raw rating? Yeah because people want to see what happens next. PPV sales succeed, TV companies are kept happy. But doing this stuff out of the blue on TV is going to upset the TV companies for the reasons mentioned, they want the hype.

Put the surprise on PPV and then the word of mouth will draw people to the TV show to see the follow-up. A surprise is also fine if it's essential to the execution of the angle with the theory being that a hot angle will increase ratings in general, instead of just a one-off bump. But if the surprise itself is the peak then it pisses away a potential ratings bump.

I think if pulled off right, surprises can still be done and can still shock the hell out of people. Most recent I can think of. Was when Bubba Ray and D-Von returned on Raw. Only a small handful of people knew, it wasn't leaked, and I think they even evaded creepy Uncle Dave and his reporters going to the arena. Then when that pyro and music hit, the crowd blew the roof off the building. Pity they lost "surprise return of the year" to Sting coming out of the statue like it was chocolate.

Surprises have to have teasers to really get the most out of them in terms of drawing people in to keep viewing...Chris Jericho's light covered jacket return to WWE was the perfect example...the vignettes that preceded it were cryptic enough that it could be multiple people, but had enough hints to keep fans hooked. Best one that I saw was Ric Flair's WWF debut, just because everyone was going..."no, it can't be..." every single week until he walked out with the old NWA title belt to "Thus Spake Zarathustra" (and because if you want to sell a surprise...get a talker the quality of the late, great Bobby Heenan to do it...there aren't many of those around nowadays!) Lol...TL...DR...you have to advertise surprises ;)

When people talk about surprises in wrestling, the one I think is underrated to me is Jake Roberts debuting in WCW attacking Sting. Jim Ross sold it perfectly and it was before the days of the internet so nobody knew about it. It also was the reason Ron Simmons faced Vader and won the WCW title because he substituted for Sting.

That depends on who is the person. You advertize Sting but you don't with Christian. And AEW did the opposite. Like if AEW had Punk coming in, they would have to advertize him. WCW were really the best at it. They promoted the coming of Bret Hart but not Rick Rude. They just did it so well.

If the way someone will make you money is by being there, then advertise that they're going to be there, if the way someone is going to make you money is by doing something specific then you can surprise people by having them show up and do that thing. For the X-Pac example, X-Pac wasn't going to make money by just being on the program, he'd make Vince money by rejoining DX, so they just had him show up and join DX. The reason Sting led to a 1 show pop in the ratings that wasn't even that high is because the angle Sting is now in isn't that interesting, but Sting's name would have been money alone

Brian and everybody else who has a basic sense of aesthetics. It looks like absolute garbage. It's not even a question of whether you like or dislike tattoos in general. The design is objectively bad, the colours are objectively bad, and the placement and size are objectively ridiculous. He looks like somebody put a fuel tank for a Harley FL on a moped, then had their three-year-old paint it. Even Brandy basically said the "supportive wife (because I have to be...)" equivalent of "he looks like a complete idiot, what was he thinking" when she was first asked about it.

It will be interesting when AEWs contract comes up for renewal, but I suspect we'll see big changes well before that. I can't imagine them getting the attendances they use to before the pandemic because the TV shows are so bad that there is no incentive to see it live. I truly believe AEWs days are numbered.
