I kind of suspected this show was going to be bad because almost the entire card were multi-man matches, which means random movefests with no flow. This felt like Punk's and Danielson's arrivals were just to lure me into watching AEW and now that it's part of my viewing habits they're resorting back to the way it was before. Well I actually forgot what day it was on Wednesday because I've had time off around Christmas and it has thrown my schedule off so I forgot to PVR it and had to watch it on the TSN app. That is telling because when a wrestling show is killing it week after week it is NOT an afterthought. I am specifically anticipating the next episode and counting down the days immediately after the previous episode ends. But all the Elite/Best Friends horseshit lately has been such a turn-off that I'm not concerned at a sub-conscious level about missing an episode. Tony Khan clearly does not consider the more realistic elements that came about after Punk arrived as an improvement, it's just something else the show has. Dumb nonsense like the Best Friends or the Dark Order will always have a place and that will always bring the show down. If Punk and Danielson left I would stop watching because clearly the show would just degrade back into what it was before.
@Jomon20062 жыл бұрын
I think Best Friends and Dark Order are fine, in much smaller doses. When you have Jay Lethal, Tony Neese, Andrade El Idolo, Lío and Dante, FTR, Team Taz, Pac, Sammy, Darby, and even the Nightmare family, you don’t need to see Best Friends, 2.0, Jurassic Express, Lucha Bros, and especially Young Bucks as much as we do. They serve a good purpose: well liked baby face faction willing to put people over, and they aren’t horrible wrestlers. This battle for Adam Cole could be intriguing if egos (aka Bucks) get out of the creative decisions. Bottom line is they need Rampage to be 2 hours, and make better use of Dark. Elevation should be the lower tier exposure show, Dark should further storylines, Dynamite and Rampage should be main storyline shows pushing towards the ppv with the occasional ppv worthy match (Danielson/Page). Bryan's first words about this show was exactly my sentiment when I got to seeing this Dynamite. They started off very strong by having a classy segment with welcoming back Jim Ross. The man truly deserved that portion and even got the verbal nod by Punk. From there it was just straight down to the bottom of the barrel. Because of what I am calling AEW's time mismanagement issues, they had to have these multi-man matches. And I say time mismanagement because Tony Khan has to cram in every single person he can to give them TV exposure because he allows these matches to linger on and on and on. Or some segments that like horrific Brandi/Lambert spot. And you would think that a lot of far more deserving people could've used that spot for an actual match rather than having a bunch of people no one wanted to watch on TV. 2.0/Garcia are probably high on Tony's list because 2.0 are goofy and are like the Bucks lite version with slightly better speaking ability. Of course, Chris has to show up so we're forced to hear that awful song of his. But it's Daily's Place so they love it. Poor Thunder Rosa. I know she'll probably be the one to beat Britt Baker because Thunder Rosa actually deserves gold at this point. But moving Jade Cargill up? Ugh. She better not win that TBS title. After the whole fiasco with Big Swole and Tony Khan, I'm almost certain it's a given. Then you'll have a worse Goldberg situation because at least with Goldberg he proved to be a draw. But that Cargill / Thunder Rosa match was painful. They stayed on the floor for no reason. It just lingered. And Cargill is bad. Now that Swole is gone, Cargill might be the worst female on their roster right now. But that bar isn't very high to begin with so whatever I guess. The Pillman segment was okay because Pillman showed some fire. But goddamn two black outs? We get to see Malakai for what half a minute? Then there was that main event. I was really looking forward to it and there were some good spots to it. But of course, the Best Dorks got offense and it was chaotic then the stupid ending where poor O'Reilly won with bad interference. Not good interference. Bad interference. Cutler comes in looking like a dork, gets pounded. So the bucks do their little sneaking in thing. Cole receives an accidental kick and things get ridiculous so that they can insert artificial tension. But O'Reilly wins for the team on his debut. But rather than making the win about him, it's about the Bucks and Cole story. No wonder people coming from WWE are fizzling. Bucks cool them off by turning them into a joke. Or the senior wrestlers get jobbed out on their entrance and no one takes them seriously anymore because it's not what people want to see. I mean we didn't have Matt Hardy's drone, or him teleporting, or Jericho with the musical nor him getting doused by Orange juice. But the way this show felt was like going back one year. Instead of demonstrating how far they've come with the addition of Punk and Danielson, it felt like all the bad habits and instincts returned. Honestly, this was one of those shows that made me want to stop watching wrestling again. Just discouraging.

Agreed with everything besides Cargill. She might be pushed too fast but she isn't pushed because of her in ring work. She looks like a star. Problem is she needs more time to actually be developed into one. Maybe it's the impatience of today and she doesn't wanna wait. She could use an NXT to hone her skill. Big Swole was bad but nothing about her even said she was a star. Even her name is more appropriate for Cargill. If they just have Cargill have 2-3 minute squash matches with occasional longer matches with Deeb, Rosa, or even a Statlander she'll be fine. You sort of have to try with someone that looks like her. I think Rosa will go after Britt eventually.

@Ze TheGame did you misunderstand what I put? I said Jade is a star but could have used more time developing. Which is true for a lot of the people they have on roster. The original comment did what Jim and others do and that's pretend you can't look at Jade and tell she has star quality which usually boils down to them personally liking someone better. Also mentioned she should have quick matches most of the time mostly so she can dominant. I'm not one of these smarks that will bash Jade and pretend I wanna see Deeb vs Ruby Soho in a 30 min match. If anything I acknowledged her being green while immediately explaining exactly why it didn't matter. Not even sure what you disagreed with. Seemed to just wanna rant on AEW's lack of stars I guess?

@Ze TheGame 100%. The AEW women's roster is awful. Baker, Rosa, Deeb, and maybe Soho know how to work. The rest are awful. People can what they want about WWE (and they have) but their women are top notch because they run EVERYONE through the PC before they go to NXT. They don't want people being sloppy in NXT. Glad Nia Jax is gone, because she was the only sloppy person on the main roster. Everyone else looks like they know what they're doing and care about people's safety.

yeah except the heel doesn't roll back out they just get in and the ref CONTINUES the count, not start a 2nd count. So if the heel rolls in at 7 and goes to a "neutral corner" cuz he doesn't care how he wins, the ref acknowledges he's in and goes 8 as loudly and slowly as possible.

The Rosa / Cargill match was the only one I saw some of. They did the over the top crossbody catch spot beautifully (Cargill caught Rosa cleanly and hit a nice backbreaker) but they were on the outside so long I tapped out. Take it in the ring, and it’s probably a good match.

As a former wrestling fan, it's pretty sad what wrestling has become. This is just another reminder of why I stopped watching wrestling years ago. I miss wrestling in the 90's when wrestling was good was worth watching every week. I grew up watching The Rock, Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Undertaker, Bret Hitman Hart, Shawn Michaels etc. You couldn't pay me to watch wrestling today sorry, but they ran fans like me off years ago. I really enjoy listening to this podcast every day.
@davyjones20322 жыл бұрын
One thing you and others forget is I'm pretty sure you were also a kid back then. Wrestling had so many stars back then and in Ruthless Aggression plus even TNA was decent. But I'm sure growing up has a lot to do with it. All my friends used to watch wrestling. They will acknowledge the good times like you but they also realize it's much easier to digest pro wrestling when you're like 8-16 years old without a computer in your literal hand or lots of other entertaining things to watch. I think that's what AEW and their biggest cheerleaders don't realize. Casual fans don't stop watching because of poor booking or "reigns of terror". They simply grow out of it.

Amen Rashad. I was a fan in the 80's territory days. I remember Jim starting in Memphis on Saturday tv and hated that wimp so bad. He was a great heel manager. Love his podcast but wrestling today is AWFUL. We knew it was a work back then and do now, but the art of kayfabe is gone and it is a shame.

On the count out matter, without tryng to justify aew way to (not) count it, for what I was able to understand from wwe shows and videogames, it doesn't get stopped when one enters the ring, but it gets restarted when he(or in this case she) exits the ring because now you have to count both, and one has just exited.

The Dan Lambert stable feels like they are keeping them in a holding pattern and are waiting to pull the trigger on something with them. The problem is that they waited too long and it become stale. It was a terrible show, the worst they had all year. Multiple tag team matches with run ins, the burial of the undisputed era and Thunder Rosa losing. With Brandi the only way to save her is to play a delusional baby face with her husband. That segment was so stagey, badly scripted and horribly acted. If that was on WWE people would of have lost their minds. Not that they are doing any better right now as it’s just a clown show over there as well.

Let me say this. The match featured 2 hot and at minimum 4 attractive women. Two of them with nice asses. The other two big fake boobs. If you're going to watch a match with women like that. Actually critiquing the wrestling is laughable and at least make it your secondary point. I can watch Anna Jay and Tay once a show. Just keep it to like 2 minutes tho lol. As far as the match it was better than most spot fest matches which low bar of course. Tay getting hit in back of the head but bleeding in front was stupid as well as catching her smiling for a moment next to Penelope outside the ring.

Stopping the count on both people is another WWE thing. Specifically, WWE restarts if a wrestler rolls in, but then rolls back out. They keep going if one rolls in and stays in. It's one of those things other wrestling enterprises didn't do, as late as October 2021 I've seen independent shows who still don't do count outs that way, but here we are. Elements of WWE style are seeping into the wider wrestling business by osmosis. I guess the reasoning is to prevent the wrestler who gets back in first from waiting to the count of eight and then jumping out last second to ensure his opponent does not get back in the ring, but that's no more of a loophole than rolling back in for a second just to keep fighting outside. I don't think there's a superior way to handle count outs. Just acknowledge a cheap win if it happens and do something about it later. Title already don't change hands that way, so fans are already conditioned not to take count outs that seriously.
@mechtronikz22892 жыл бұрын
I never thought about it until now but in my opinion, and others may and most likely will disagree. But in my opinion, the only good match for the Undisputed Era in all of AEW is MJF and FTR. The Best friends is a no, The Dark Order is a no, 2.0 is a no, The Hardy Party is a no, Jurassic Express is a no, the Lucha Brothers are a no, and Santana and Ortiz hardly ever wrestle. The stark contrast between styles makes it hard to picture any of those matches looking good.
