All you have to do is listen to the crowd. Darby got a decent pop. Jungle Boy, a babyface, got a "STFU" chant. Sammy had the crowd confused about whether they should clap or boo. And MJF got a huge pop because the crowd knows he's the best thing going.

MJF is basically having to do in his mid to late 20s what Flair did in the 80s, when he was almost 40, with Sting. Flair helped Steve Borden get over like crazy. But Steve had to have the charisma, promos and decent in ring ability to begin with. He wasn’t a no talent, completely green hack like these guys. Darby is the best of the bunch, but it’s a good thing he’s with Sting. If they hadn’t dropped the ball with Wardlow, they would have had something there. MJF has to walk that fine line of being his character while helping to get over his opponents or no one will care. The problem is that one of the three opponents is a heel himself. They have enough quality young talent right now to seriously hurt WWE if Tony knew what to do with it. They have Sammy, Darby, Wardlow, Hobbs, Brian Pillman Jr., The Acclaimed, The Gunns (especially Austin), and even Anna Jay, Julia Hart, and Skye Blue if Tony had a decent developmental system, and any common sense about how to use them. All of those people I mentioned could be major talents with the right training and booking, but they are just wasting away and picking up bad habits in AEW. I think this segment happened because Tony is unwilling to tell 2 of the guys out there that they are not good enough and are not in a position where he can competently or confidently position them for a World title run because they are not ready. Jungle Boy and Sammy both would need to work on some mass, character, and mic skills in order to do it. Darby has a defined character, charisma and under dog appeal that could work. The first time Darby blew them away in a promo, he should have had MJF come out there another night and inform the two of them that he talked to Tony and made it clear that they aren't good enough and he is not going to wrestle them for his title, only one of them would get the shot. Then it should have been announced that Tony would be watching closely to understand who had the best record for it - and have them work through matches. Sammy is a heel, so naturally he tries to screw up both Darby and Jungle Boy -match interference, backstage attacks. Jungle Boy early loser gets taken out. Darby outwits/outdoes Sammy - then they have a 1v1 where he barely manages it but goes over and puts Sammy away. Darby gets announced for the next PPV title shot. Crowd is with Darby, Darby does basically Undertaker vs Jeff Hardy - make yourself famous! and barely gets there and misses it. MJF goes over. Darby is now more over than ever, goes onto some other main event feuds with other guys. Sammy and JB should be no where near this feud.

Darby has improved in his promos by leaps and bounds, but I feel that Jungle Boy and Sammy are still trying to figure out who they are as "gimmicks". It's weird that Jungle Boy and Sammy have been around Jericho and Christian for a time and their promos are still subpar, but Darby has gotten better while paling around with Sting, who isn't known for being a great promo...granted, Jericho wants to be a clown instead of a mentor and Jungle Boy is in that group of people who doesn't like to take advice and just wants to go out and run spots.

before seeing this segment, i saw other comments on how painful this segment was. so i went in with exceptional low expectations. but sometimes pain just is raw pain and there's nothing one can do (except maybe certain types of drugs) to mitigate a god awful segment. the real problem is that this segment droned on and it really did sound like an incoherent bitch fest. Here's the issue on why this thing went sideways: there was no issue. Or at least no mass appealing issue that the audience could get into. it was personal and petty, which made it hard to side with anyone until MJF came out just because the energy popped up slightly. but again the reason why JB and Sammy aren't really catching on the way Darby is, is because there's nothing to really latch onto when it comes to symbolism. Darby is the oddball, outcast. He isn't "cool;" he's the misfit. So JB calling Darby cool just killed Darby's gimmick. Sammy is just annoying so he can get heat easily. He's basically that "jerk meme" you'd see with the guy and his reverse floppy cap. But he doesn't consistently maintain that image. And there's plenty of people he can look towards in finding inspiration for his personality like Gino Hernandez (which is more like MJF's persona), Steve Austin in the USWA when he was with Lady Blossom or Hollywood John Tatum back in WCCW when Missy Hyatt was his valet. Until he can nail down that aspect, finding the right tone, learning how to speak in a certain manner consistently, then Sammy shouldn't be anywhere near the main event picture, pillar or not (which is stupid since there are better qualified people who should be in that spot). JB really has nothing when he's talking into the microphone. His only real attribute is his father's legacy. But since his father was a major TV celebrity back in the day, few people are going to feel sympathetic towards JB (unless they were a supermark for that show). And now that it's been publicly revealed that he was handpicked due to his California affiliation, you can't really go back. So from a symbolic figure point of view, what can he offer at this point? The only thing he could appeal to are the girls but he's shown with Anna Jay so that just kills off that image right away. Without that symbolic reference, it's tough for someone to speak from the heart and understand how to make an issue seem bigger than what it is. They need to go back to the drawing board with JB. He really shouldn't be in this conversation. Just because he went through some feud with Christian doesn't mean he's more over nor has he truly graduated where he needed. And Sammy needs to work on consistency. He's got the heat, but he has no idea how to make it work. As far as the PPV match, you know they're going to do a fatal four way. Why even have all this hoopla in bringing up all four guys unless Tony wants them in the ring together at the same time.

Smackdown did it once.... as a comedy spot, it was the segment where chistian and miz yelled 'randy Riley!!' at each other, and R-truth was there, don't remember the date off the top of my head.

Appealing to the smart fans and mentioning people's backstage politics in promos is very Russo era WCW. Look how that turned out.

Are we sure these guys are the "Pillars" of AEW? Because if these are their future generational main eventers, this company ain't gonna too much longer.

Jim's right. Mjf-Darby is the match. JB and Sammy add nothing to the match.

Jungle boy's promo reminds me of Jason Sensation's Owen Hart impersonation, "I am not nugget". That's the same tone Jungle boys promo is always in when he gets loud.

The Four Pillars of AEW Jim Cornette said it best at 7:16. & AEW fans though it would be an even steven tall & strong stack of pillars back in 2020. This was exactly how I saw even once the pandemic happened.

Jungle boy is the symptom of current wrestling "fanbase" thinking they know better than bookers and wrestling companies. There is nothing unique about the guy. If you watch him wrestle, you are pretty much watching 90% of today's wrestlers as they do the same stuff and lack the personality. Also, cracking a few jokes does not equal charisma.

The main problem with 3 out of the 4 of these pillars is that they have yet to do anything independently. Darby, Sammy, and Perry are all still linked to another talent for the most part, with Darby being the only one that is not totally overshadowed by his alignment with Sting. Aside from the pillar's gimmick, it is hard to figure out why Sammy and Jungle Boy even rank a title shot; at least Darby has some history with MJF.

I love how Jim started with Jungleboy as just some dude who hung out with a dinosaur, to "hey he could possibly have a future if played right", and now back to "good God shut the fuck up."

People still think there's going to be a 4-way between the "pillars," but hopefully Tony just have Jungle Boy cost Sammy on Dynamite and they have 2 1v1 feud. Darby v MJF and Jungle Boy v Sammy.
