@@henryowens396 Helwani to this day is still probably the most well known and best MMA journalist there is as well. I guess part of that is due to how he screwed himself over by reporting Lesnar's UFC 200 appearance before the UFC would post their big announcement at the time. Dana White loves to bash Helwani and it's sort of become a thing now where he's persona non grata at UFC events.
@henryowens3962 жыл бұрын
@@presentedbyconormctappersp4565 For sure! Been loving Helwani's content as an avid MMA fan for a while. He can get a litttttleeee annoying at times, but that's expected for a journalist. I work in journalism myself where I have to conduct many interviews, and his boldness to dig for the important discussions without fear is admirable. I think the athletes often feel as if he's asking too much which is fair, but he's merely trying to get people to tell their story, and make them more relatable to the audience. A great wrestling example of this in wrestling is Triple H being as candid as he can be in his Helwani interview, being incredibly transparent about the stuff he wants to be transparent about, but also not dodging questions and instead answering them in a way that doesn't pull back the curtain too much. Tony on the opposite side, was standoffish and uncooperative, not revealing any real personality. You work with Helwani's curiosity, and he can find the side of you people will love

Reason he's so popular is that he went into business with the elite, which also meant that he got all of their stans on board, along with other indie superfans. Now, that obviously gave them a solid baseline, but as evidenced by recent events, things maybe haven't been so rosy backstage once it wasn't just the buddies of the EVPs they're bringing in. Obviously they'll paint that as the fault of the outsiders coming in, see Omega's comments from the talent meeting in August, and likely they'll return now with one of their biggest hindrances gone because he went scorched earth rather than engaging in the continuous passive aggressive comments from that camp. Loser in the end is Tony, who's now lost his biggest star because of the very same people he decided to go into business with at the start. It got him off the ground, but it'll probably keep him a distant number two as well.

i keep reiterating that Tony Khan's only positive attribute is his father's money. That's it. He comes off any media as being unprofessional, a braggart, having zero ability to answer simple questions concisely or just being able to answer questions (gee, i would've loved reading his college essays). The guy should hire a professional for dealing with all media inquiries because it's pretty clear he's way in over his head in just about everything. I don't blame Helwani's frustrating here. Tony deviated and just went in meandering circles where he's more interested in exposing the ratings or success rather than focusing on the questions. Now, imagine having this guy as your boss if he isn't a mark for you. Now, there are people who got let go (contracts expired) and probably deservedly so, but his handling of them is not much different than the way he handled Helwani's questions. It's just passive-aggressiveness. I mean, why did he even bother accepting this interview if he's unwilling to answer anything? Does he realize that it makes him look supremely bad? Everyone already has condemned Tony about his twitter usage. And all I can think of is how a spoiled rich kid who got everything he wanted was used to saying what he wanted to whomever. In this case though, he's got a big time media relations person talking to him. It just makes Tony look really dumb. And this just brings me to the thought that Tony's best role for AEW is being an angel investor with some input as far as the general direction of the company (they call these people corporate strategist). He doesn't have to get in the weeds (even though I think he'd like to in a literal sense here) and he can make suggestions if things start moving in a bad direction. But the overall thing has to be handled by better people. I've seen enough disasters when the money guy tries to do a role he's not good at. Maybe when you're starting out, being hands on is fun because it's new and you get to try different things. With AEW, it seemed more like a thought experiment that gained enough traction. But once Punk, Danielson, etc. started rolling in, they should've started taking things more seriously. Not necessarily as a competitor to the WWE but just their overall approaching where you need to step it up a notch in the maturation of a company. They've done reasonably well on the talent level in beefing up their roster while getting rid of some of the plagued ridden people that detracted. But they need more of that aspect behind the scenes as well. And having a representative become the president/figurehead seems like the next major step for them to be successful.

Honestly wish Cody would've found someone else to fund this whole thing. AEW was his creation and Tony Khan basically stole it to take all the credit (not to mention letting Omega, the Bucks and Jericho run amok) and now he's losing control because he never bothered to learn how to run a promotion. Meanwhile, Cody had his dad's teaching to rely on.

The BT Sport / ITV Gaffe might go un-noticed to all US listeners. I'll explain. Warner own BT Sport, a £20 per month subscription service in the UK who broadcast Raw & The PPVs live. AEW done their UKTV deal with ITV, a free to air terrestrial service who show Dynamite 2 days after the event in the UK on a Friday night, with Rampage broadcast on a similar basis. The fact that AEW's ratings have increased lately is because we know for 36 hours in advance if someone has done something real fucking stupid that we should tune into see. In the UK It's free, not live and competes with no other sport whatsoever in the time slot.

The more I hear Ariel Helwani, the more I believe he will be like a Bob Costas type, in the aspect of being able to discuss many different topics in an intelligent way. I know he's an MMA guy but he can speak on a wide range of sports very cogently. And, he asks tough questions and takes no shit.

As someone who lives in the UK, I can tell you that AEW doesn't even appear on ITV's premier channel, but actually ITV2 which is the channel that shows re-runs and movies. BT however is a subscription based channel and has premium level sports like football and MMA. Tony Khan is deluded if he thinks ITV2 is better than BT Sport.

Tony Khan has gotten a lot of leeway with what he says versus what he does, and he never takes responsibility for anything and deflects everything. Being liked means more to him than being respected, and he does not know the difference between the two.
