I interned with WWE while Joey Styles was there. We were having water cooler talk about One Night Stand and Sandman’s entrance came up. I asked him about his uniqueness and Joey responds with “It worked because that’s who he was. He was a drunk construction worker.”

Say what you want about his in ring performance, the Sandman’s entrance is one of the best I’ve ever seen.

I think the one night stand entrance was the best version of it, it felt like a real send-off and wonderful to know that the energy had never left the fans. There's even a moment where Sandman looks surprised to know the magic was still there

Sandman's entrance though. As has been said, it was EXTREMELY OVER for the time and place. It worked because he was like Joe Everyman, half the audience looked like him and drank like him.

Sandman's entrance at ECW one night stand 2005 is easily the greatest entrance in wrestling history especially with the fans singing enter sandman that was phenomenal I'm so glad they mentioned his feud with raven in 1996 that was crazy.

Sandman has the allure of your drunk troubled Uncle walking off from a construction site into the ring with a bunch of weapons. It works in a way, its a real life gimmick it works

I'm not jazzed about his type of wrestling, but Sandman, IMO, was entertaining. He had to be yoked at one point to be a Chippendale didn't he? Unless they were really desperate 🤣🤣🤣🤣

The Sandman entrance was hilarious for tag matches, still took his usual 10 or so minutes even though most of the time the heels were beating the shit out his tag partner before the match even started(most of the time involving the Dudleys and Tommy Dreamer) 🤣

Sandman was over! Worked his ass off & "got over" by being authentic as hell. That audience really appreciated the Sandman! 🍻 🚬

A wrestler’s job is to get over. Getting over is how you get paid. It doesn’t matter if it wouldn’t get over somewhere else or some time else. The Undertaker as originally packaged wouldn’t get over today. All that matters is that it DID get over, and big, hence why we’re talking about it.

FYI: Sandman COULD work. Watch a couple of his WWE matches, he's grappling fairly decent considering he was drunk...go behinds, throws, suplexes, etc. Certainly better than Moxley. Same as New Jack - he could wrestle his ass off, but it didn't work for the gimmick.

Dude that storyline with Sandman’s family being indoctrinated by Raven was next level, so underrated for its time. I remember Rhyno like driving Sandman’s wife from the apron thru a table to the concrete…still one of the wildest things I’ve ever seen in wrestling. Sure, a lot of the promotion was over the top garbage bloodbaths but there was some amazing story angles over the years that they have a ton of time to let breathe and mature, some really compelling stuff. Growing up with ECW is still one of my fondest wrestling memories, shit was so wild. God bless ECW 🤘🏻

1 of my best memories from seein wrestling live was seeing an ECW show in Huntington WV when WWE was “bringin it back” was Sandman’s entrance through the crowd was right in arms reach of me my dad n brother! It was awesome! We got splashed with beer and my brother was chugging his cup with him! Me and my dad always heard rumors that WWE beer was fake and all but NO it’s not at all 😅 Side note while on subject of ECW guys and memories, we once bumped into the Dudleyz with Spike at a gas station leaving Charleston or Huntington WV I don’t remember which but they was lost kinda and my dad give em directions

Yeah Austin was a better worker + the blue collar working class Philly crowds found him uniquely appealing. The WWF/E crowds were too broad with different types of fans. He would've got lost in the shuffle. Plus VKM would've given him a sh!tty gimmick that probably would have buried him.

The five months of "Hardcore Hak" in WCW in 1999 were yet another reason why that company just deserved to die from a certain point onwards. As offensively bad as Death Shitzu Moxley is, Hak was ten levels below him in quality. And five levels below his less-bad Sandman stuff. I can't say "better" when there is no "good" to begin with, only varying levels of shite. Sure, his entrance in ECW was over - because that trashy edgelord-wannabe audience had a proxy in him and Metallica were becoming the biggest band in the world, while still having the approval of their original non-mainstream audience (that sweet-spot moment in time didn't last...). Ironically, half of the ECW audience probably could have had a better "match" than him.
