Black Saturday is the name wrestling fans gave to July 14th 1984, the day Vince McMahon appeared on Ted Turner's TBS and taking over the Saturday 6:05 timeslot with WWF programming.
Up until Vince McMahon and the WWF appeared on the Superstation, Georgia Championship Wrestling aired on the channel every Saturday night with their wrestling show named "World Championship Wrestling" (not to be confused with the WCW promotion that would exist years later after Turner purchased Jim Crockett Promotions). Wrestling fans enjoyed Georgia Championship Wrestling's Saturday shows, they tuned into the Superstation to see Gordon Solie host their favourite weekly wrestling broadcast while, at the same time, showing a dislike for Vince McMahon's more "cartoony" form of Pro Wrestling in New York. McMahon tried to purchase the timeslot on WTBS but Turner refused to sell, and so McMahon managed to buy Georgia Championship Wrestling - leading to WWF matches taking place on the World Championship Wrestling show on the Superstation. Many within the NWA felt that this was the end of an era, and fans were livid that their wrestling was replaced by Vince McMahon's brand of "sports entertainment". If we compare it to today, it would be like Vince McMahon appearing on TNT during an AEW Dynamite broadcast and announcing that Raw and Smackdown matches would air instead of AEW matches.
This video looks at Black Saturday, how Vince McMahon bought Georgia Chmapionship Wrestling, and how McMahon would eventually sell the timeslot and move ahead with WrestleMania 1.
00:00 - Intro
01:54 - Georgia Championship Wrestling on TBS
03:25 - McMahon buys GCW
11:17 - Black Saturday
14:07 - Fan Backlash
16:04 - More wrestling promotions join the Superstation
17:47 - Vince McMahon sells the Saturday timeslot
19:25 - Ted Turner buys Jim Crockett Promotions

That puts a heart felt smile on my face, knowing Turner kept wrestling on tv just bc he loved it. That really changes my view on him from when i was a kid. I was always, AlwayS a WWF guy, but im happy now knowing what Turner did :)

Turner always appreciated what Wrestling did for his business. It's why it took him losing decision making power to make it go away. It's the only reason WCW folded. People like to say it was one reason or another that WCW went out of business, but it was only ever because of the Time Warner deal, and Turner losing power due to it. The Monday Night Wars might still be going on to this day if Turner had any say in it.

@@chrisjuckett2728 I doubt the Monday night wars would have the same fervor they had in the mid 90s because of the hit in viewership they took from Russo’s booking, however if Ted Turner still had the reigns WCW would probably still be around today

The day the industry changed forever. Fans lost the product they had loved for 12 years, the industry would undergo a transformation that would give it short term success but damage it long term and the territory system would give it begin its decline. Did people really have choice back then though? If a person back then lived in certain geographical areas and had cable television then they had choice. Otherwise, they were usually just relegated to watching whatever the local NWA territory was especially if they had no cable. I suppose that back in the 1950s to 1970s and even up till the very early 1980s that most huge wrestling fans living in most places in America outside the major media markets probably had to get information of what was happening in other territories or promotions from wrestling magazines.

@@growlusnotneeded3251 Yes. What unfolded later in terms of WWF/WWE and its eventual consolidation of the market, as pointed out in the video, changed the wrestling product we saw for good / ill and Mr. WB was brilliant in his opening in particular -- painting a picture for younger viewers to imagine would be like in today's market to turn on the TV to see a "takeover" of this kind, also aptly noting that the existence of social media would probably make it impossible to occur. That was the problem, for the most part, Vince always used his TV to sell the live event business, now Georgia wrestling did have squash matches, but in the 80s, you couldn't compare match quality between the NWA and the WWF, the matches might as well have been on different planets.

In all honesty from everything I can gather from the time period in the 80s because there were so many regional promotions under the NWA banner they were all mainly operating at a loss or close to it and most who were running them were all looking to either sell or merge with others to try and getting a larger possible audience. A few have suggested that it was Vince's fault because of the money that was spent buying back GCW that JCP was eventually sold to Turner. When if anything the business model was dead and having regional promotions no longer worked when you were trying to reach a national audience and having programming that only certain places got to see just wasn't going to cut it anymore. It also was far more expensive when certain guys were being booked in two different territories in one day because each territory knew the top guys were going to sell more tickets but the travel expenses were out weighing the turnover eventually. If anything Vince just helped speeding up the process of the NWA's business model being obsolete faster.

If anything, the NWA should have consolidated the regions in the early 80s, like a West of the Rockies, Midwest, Dixie (And Texas) and Mid-Atlantic and gave each one a feature basic cable weekly show. Georgia Championship Wrestling (later World Championship Wrestling v. 1) was the model to follow, but I dunno if you could have told anyone in 1981/82 and had them listen.

It wasn't because JCP buying the time slot that made them sell. In 85 to 87 they made money in comparison. It was Crockett's expansion in buying UWF/ mid south and running shows in the West. Missed opportunity on the part Vince McMahon. He could've had matches where WWF wrestlers could wrestle wrestlers from the South. Imagine Roadwarriors vs British Bulldogs.
@andrejg4136

Now if Vince wasn't a petty vindictive man with an axe to grind, he would have held the programming steady for a month or so, but teased some A or B-tier WWF talent coming down to assess the situation. Basically you know how everyone fantasy books the Invasion? That but in reverse with the WWF Talent being the invaders.

Nice video and addressed some of the nuances of this issue, which can be rather confusing. I lived in an area where we had access to USA and the time, but not TBS, so I only learned of this later. I always wanted TBS, as it had a lot of good programmes, including wrestling, baseball and classic shows and movies. I wouldn't get it until the mid 90's.

I loved both the NWA and the WWF back in the day. I loved the WWF because of its over-the-top characters and promos. Plus, I loved the interactions between people like Gorilla and Heenan. I loved the NWA-style because it was usually fast-paced action. I couldn't wait to see Ric Flair go against the challenger of the week. Likewise, I could barely wait until Saturday Night's Main Event to see Hogan go against whoever, especially considering Hogan hardly ever wrestled on non-PPV events.
