Every third Sunday in June all the men who have generously taken on the role of dad in some child's life are honored with coffee mugs, neckties, and barbeque equipment. For all the men who do not have children, don't feel left out; comedian Jim Gaffigan has a message for you.

That can be a lonely thing going on in your life, but if you have good friends, supporters, as well as a great job and such, or even a wife by your side, then you'd have it all made and wouldn't feel so lonely, or even be worrying about money, either.

Please understand that there are many men who didn't choose not to be a dad, but who are childless not by choice which holds a variety of grief and trauma. Regardless of the resume, not parenting doesn't mean you are a "toddler," and there are ways to be a father figure without having children of your own. I know this was supposed to be funny, but it landed as entitled, pronatalist trash. You don't get less of a Father's Day if someone else is celebrated for being a special person in a child's life. Just be kind.

There's a dismissive undertone to this whole thing that bothers me. I am a man in my 40s, childfree by choice, and absolutely an adult. I may not have to contend with some of the problems that fathers face, but I do have worries and concerns that keep me up at night. I'm currently unemployed, and fighting to hold onto my meager housing. Of course, as a single guy with no dependents, there is limited assistance available to someone like me. There is an ongoing societal misconception that ALL childfree people are wealthy and successful, with no real responsibilities or issues. I for one am sick and tired of that narrative. I am going through a LOT right now, but no one really worries too much since, as I've been told, 'It's not like you have kids to support.' Right, I'm just trying to keep myself from becoming homeless. Thanks for your concern.

There are many men who are not fathers that would take offense. I am a childless woman and I took offense to your opinion. I love you Jim but there are many, many men out there who aren't fathers but would love to be. The childless road is a difficult road to walk because we know that we will never have a family to share holidays with. It is a heart break that never heals completely. All I am asking is that you look at it from the side of men who don't have a family but desperately want one.

I hear what you are saying, but I think the content of what he was saying was for those who actually father (the verb); the ones who do the work of a father every day. I doubt he, an actual father, would address those who fit in the biological only category. They would more likely fit in the other category of those who don't fit the day.

My Dad never made enough money as a teacher or in the Navy, or at Ft. Rucker when I lived at home. Mom didn't work. There is no ERA, so if she had worked, it would have been for minimum wage. Surrogacy. One can always find someone willing to use your insurance to give birth to a baby, and they don't get paid. Unlike men who get paid for donations of sperm. No one can pay enough for giving the life of a baby, maybe? You have options. And there is the rescue of a child through adoption. There are children who are sick, or low IQ or too old for most people to want them. Foster Care doesn't have many children who are free to be adopted, but that is an option. Big Brothers can give you exposure to children who benefit from your leadership and friendship as a father figure. And then there are Boy Scouts. If you are broke, it may not seem feasible. I wish you the best. We had foreign exchange students and went into debt $6000.00 in activities and food for 9 months. It was worth it. The program paid $50 a month for us to care for these young people and we did. They rebelled, and they had culture shock, and they hated that we didn't have children to make their lives easier. We didn't do it but once, but I am glad we did try to be parents to young people.

I'm a woman 40+ without children. It's not by choice, but I'm not going to raise children on my own on purpose. Regardless if you're a man or woman without children most are aunts or uncles to other children even if they don't have siblings. I know so many chosen families that call each other sister, brother, and uncle and aunt and grandparents. Some may not have children, but choose to have pets and in these current times it's very similar to raising a child. No you don't pay to clothe them or put them in sports or send them to college, but hi give them quality of life its expensive alone without throwing the cost of children in there. This guy doesn't get to tell other men who and who isn't able to be recognized on Father's day. Yes, let him vent away, but remember it's only his opinion.

Dad did secure his weapons, but he didn't teach me about the brakes and when I was 5 or 6 he laughed when I wiped out. I can give a list of things I am grateful for with my Dad. I may have a longer list of things he really messed up with. I shower my husband with doing things for him and giving things to him that will help him on Father's Day. Most fathers whose wives had multiple miscarriages are not going to say anything here, because it is too painful. It is like going to church and being asked to stand up and your Dad died the day before or your wife is still having a miscarriage. The baby doesn't come out like child birth with miscarriage, most of the time. It may take 6 weeks, and then sometimes there might be baby bones left inside that causes repeated miscarriages unless there is a dilation and curettage to scrape the baby bones out. I have met women who have had 12 miscarriages. Forget about looking into the Bible for help on miscarriages. Most translations never mention it, and I wonder if it is real in the 5 or 6 translations that do mention miscarriages? Jim would be hard put to choose which child he would sacrifice to death or disease. Not so many men are living below poverty after divorce, and yet women with children are in a group of 75% below poverty if they are divorced with children. Women without children number 44% of women. This means that perhaps a large number of men are also childless, or not. One woman can have children with 3 or 4 men, and whether it is by mutual consent or betrayal, There are women who die, and women who abandon their husbands who have to raise the children alone. Not so common. Many times grandparents raise children who lose one or more parent. The drudgery of raising a human being or 10 or 20 human beings has been done for quite a long time. It isn't easy. Fathers can be people who make a difference, if they choose to. We don't ever hear from Jim's kids, so we don't know if he is making a difference or just belly aching until they leave his home in disgust, or something. How could I make Father's Day funny? Too many kids? Not enough kids? No kids? Escapades kids get into? How fathers survive? IDK. If 44% of women are childless, how many men are supposedly childless? Who knows?

This piece is horrible. I've sat with women who miscarried, had IVF that didn’t work, had a tubal pregnancy. Those women had husbands. They wanted to be parents. It's not rare. "Humor" that causes pain isn’t funny. Losing a child, a pregnancy, isn’t shared widely.... it's painful and personal. Jim, now you know, do better.

Only people that have had children can compare the two ways of life (having and not having children). There is no way of knowing just how fulfilling it can be to have children, until you have them yourself. True, children are a test at times. But they sure are with it. You have to let go of selfish motivations though!
