Fact: most people go around feeling like they need a big forgiving hug. Sometimes daily. Sometimes hourly. (Even this atheist understands that much.) Maybe we just need more forgiving hugs.

lol I get why you mentioned being an atheist. The world hasn't reached a point yet where people of different backgrounds are really expected to get along, as ridiculous as that sounds to most people. It's the same reason every time a black guy does something nice for a white guy, or vice versa, it gets shared on facebook with a title like "love not hate" or something lol. I appreciate that people are trying to set an example.

The praying hands emoji indicates "Namaste" which means I salute the god within you. Here in Asia it's used to show that you apologize for a faux pas, or to greet others politely or to show that you appreciate a kindness. We don't use it to mean I'm praying for you.

I love this dude and I know how supportive a church family can be. Mine has come together for me and my family throughout my entire life. I was diagnosed with stage 3 brain cancer about three years ago. Needless to say my family and I were having a tough go of it. Those folks provided emotional support for us all the way through my surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy. I consider myself really blessed to have such a wonderful group of people thinking about and praying for me. ps- I survived. Medical University of South Carolina brain surgeons removed a tumor the size of a deck of playing cards from the left frontal lobe of my brain. Yaayyyy modern medical science! I was in and out of the hospital in less than 24 hours with no side effects. MUSC was on point with this one. Radiation therapy wasn't that bad. Chemo was horrible. God is good. I am thankful.

Elektric Skeptic Johaniskraut Bernstein Or'Cheard I would agree but challenge your statement by saying that the majority of faith-based individuals are not motivated by anger, fear, and hate, but the ones who are tend to garner far more attention. Pay attention to the ones you meet that have faith apart from political and national affiliation. They will probably surprise you in how authentic and sincere they are in the love and compassion they demonstrate. Jesus instructed his disciples to beware the leaven of the Pharisees (empty religious devotion) and of Herod (political gain). Unfortunately so few believers have the understanding and wherewithal to obey.

I think what he's trying to say is that he loves some aspects of religion, like the sense of family, but he doesnt truly believe everything about it. I'm in the same type of relationship he is but I dont pretend to believe. My thought process is all the good things that you like about your religion can be achieved without the supernatural stuff. You just have to be a better person not for a god, but for you and your fellow humans.

Agreed. If people get that from their church, that's great. But it's not because of the church, it's because of the people that go there. You also don't need a church to find friends, community, and a supportive environment. I have that with my neighbors. And yes, believe it or not, I live in America. How sad is it that people feel they can't get that from their neighbors in America so they need to look for it in church?

Agree as well. Just look at the bible. It's basically a guide book on how to be a good human, a decent member of society. It's a book of stories, allegories, and metaphors trying to teach you lessons on life. People get into trouble when they take these stories as the literal truth as if it actually happened that way with all the magic and such. If people want to waste their time with religion, aka mythology, and pour their hard earned money into the pockets of the clergy, go right ahead. I on the other hand can be a good human on my own. It isn't difficult.

The "prayer hands" emoji was originally meant to represent two hands placed firmly together, meaning "please" or "thank you" in Japanese culture. So, I would interpret "See you at dinner 🙏" as the sender being super grateful that the recipient is coming, not a prayer. (... Do other people think I'm praying to them when I use it as intended?)

2:03 People do that constantly! Especially if your name has more than 2 syllables! People will ignore the name you told them and declare "well I'll just call you...". Or the "polite" ones will ask "do you have a nick name I can call you?" My answer to both options is always "No".

Erica has a lot of syllables but I've always been called Erica because what do you shorten that down to? Air? As a matter of fact, I was that kid in school with a name you couldn't shorten so I never had a nickname of any kind and it always bothered me. So when I had a kid, I gave her a name that she doesn't even realize is her name because I've never called her that, I call her by her nickname and don't even introduce her by her real name. So I guess weird things have differently weird effects on people.
