"This lyrical, introverted, and sometimes exquisite set of duets by guitarist Jim Hall and bassist Red Mitchell was originally made for John Snyder's Artist House label and later reissued on CD by MHS. Hall and Mitchell always had big ears, and although the music is at a low volume and the duo stretches out on a bit on their four originals, the Mexican folk song "Blue Dove" and "Fly Me to the Moon," there are no sleepy moments."

It took me 40 years from having this on a cassette, to now find it back on youtube. So happy

I was working for John Snyder at Artists House, and was thrilled to get to record this at Sweet Basil with the engineer Chip Stokes who had a little East Side recording studio. It was recorded completely live to 2-track, no editing, on either a Studer or Nagra open-reel machine. Sounded considerably better on the vinyl and cassette than here.. You'll note that we also captured a few electronic bursts of ugliness from Red's highly-prized, custom amp (which was prone to such things and a bit of a problem, but Red wouldn't part with it). Included with the record was also a nice little booklet we put together for the record, including a lead sheet for Jim's tune Waltz New, (counterfact on Someday My Prince Will Come, here at around 15:00), there was also a selected discography with a couple of comments from Jim, and notes on the recording equipment. Red Mitchell was on Jim's first recording as leader, a fine trio recording. Like all the greats, at 26 or so for that recording, Hall was fully formed. Red had been living in Sweden for decades before he came over to play and record this with Jim. I could go on. Been some time since I listened to this. Sure can tell it's Mitchell, particularly with his tuning (in 5ths like a 'cello, but an octave lower). Still don't know how he managed getting around on that, and stay in tune. You can hear Jim's sweet old Gibson GA-50 amp here, which other photos show, customarily, sitting on a chair behind him. I can't be sure, but I think he posed with the D'Aquisto, but played his old ES-175 with the pickup Atilla Zoller wound for him a decade or so earlier, with the Van Eps string damper always in the raised position (never ever saw him use it).

Hello. Thank you for your part in this record, it was actually the first Jim Hall record that I overplayed on youtube, in discovering him. It is my strong regret to have not seen him live in NYC, before he passed, as I was (sadly) seeing indie bands at the time. Thank you again.

Yes and at 10.15 you can hear some plates being scraped or stacked. I love it. It adds a poignancy, I find... a long-ago moment in someone's life somehow placing .. (hiccup) ... this eternal music in ... (belch) ... time..

I always considered this LP and the trio date, Jim Hall Live, to be my real education for jazz guitar . I started on these records while in high school, must have listened to them a thousand times. It would make a really good study to contrast the recordings Jim Hall made with different bass players, to see the progression from Don Thompson, Ron Carter, Steve Laspina, and Red Mitchell.

One of the albums you keep coming back to and such a hallmark album of taste , excellence and a truly wonderfully swinging soulful acoustic narrative approach . Guitar Bass duo wise doesn't get much better than this . Reds Cello tunings on double give the whole sound another pallete ... 5 stars 🌟

There's not much more to say about Jim Hall - what a great musician. While the same goes for Red Mitchell, I feel compelled to note here what an incredibly and uniquely musical bassist he is! So musical. No one else like him.

As much as I love Jim Hall, I think you need to allow there are quite a number of great guitarists of his and other eras who are worthy of mention. I don't want to compile a list but I'll mention a few: Barney Kessel, Grant Green, Joe Pass, Herb Ellis, Tal Farlow, Philip Catherine.....just open you mind and your ears, there's so much to enjoy.
