I heard (from a Marvel employee at the time) that Lee was working on Punisher in the Marvel offices when he saw Barry Windsor Smith pages come through (may have been Weapon x?). And that's how he adopted a more BWS style afterwards.

While DC was still limiting the good paper at this time to direct sales only books, Marvel was using in on small number of newsstand books, including Punisher War Journal and Excalibur.
