Jim McMahon. The last sports figure I idolized as a young man. I had heard many stories of the after-effects of his concussions etc. and I am so glad to see him healthy and still cool. Meeting Sweetness was such a joyful moment as well.

Often it is mentioned that the Bears haven't had a QB since the early days with Sid Luckman. Few people know Jim McMahon won 30 or 31 out of 33 games over a stretch with the Bears. No one, absolutely no one - not Brady, Montana, Mahomes, Manning - ever did that in theNFL. The great Steve Young has told the story of when he was at BYU and watching McMahon on the sidelines, and letting people know how much talent Jim had. Young would say that Jim would have put up awesome numbers had he gone to a west coast offense. Jim was a winner, and he was very, very good. Injuries masked his potential for greatness.

That Minnesota games is one of my favourites of all time. McMahon came in hurt and I think threw 3 TD's in 4 or 5 plays. The blitz pick-up by Payton was a thing of beauty.

HA! First game I ever watched and I have been a fan ever since. Jim was no superstar QB but he was more important to that team than he gets credit for. BTW you can find that game on KZbin, I watched it recently and it was just as great as I remembered it.

I worked at Soldier Field as a teen in the 70's and I saw Walter play. I worked for the Chicago Park district and l would sneak down to the sidelines and try to look like I belonged and it worked. Got to see NFL football and the greatest player of all time in action closer than any of the fans could ever dream. I was there when he ran for 275 yards vs the Vikings. I was lucky! Met him at three different points in my life and he was indeed the man.

Man folks, there has NEVER been and NEVER will be another athlete like Walter Payton. Nobody even scratches the surface of what he could do...and a wonderful human being at the same time who didn't need to say a single word. No gums flapping or jawing or trash talk. His presence and his actions did ALL the talking. A superhuman compared to players of today who jump around and act like they've won the Super Bowl every time they simply do their job.

No doubt Walter was the greatest football player- all around or otherwise - who ever lived - period. I will never forget the Thanksgiving Day game where the Bears quarterback threw the ball to Walter and he turned around - running backwards now - caught the ball and spun around and ran away down the sidelines for a touchdown. In every aspect, he was incomparable. The day they showed him on TV dying of cancer at 135 pounds - November 1, 1999 was the saddest day I have seen or witnessed across Chicago next to Harold’s funeral. I never was crazy about McMahon, but he was a Pro Bowler at QB and he is right about Walter.

At one point the Bears had lost their starting QB & backup QB to injuries. The (TV) game announcer reported that if Chicago's # 3- QB should get hurt the Bears would turn to Walter to take the snaps. R.I.P., Thanks Sweetness. 🏉🐻 34

Goddammit I miss Jimmy Mac! He tells it like it was! And should still be! Both Jimmy & Billy Wade wore the same number, both won a Championship followed by a drought! And kinda of had similar attitudes! Go Figure! Jimmy Mac is and always will be my Dog! Smart and could spin the ball! I miss him! My all time Jimmy Mac statement was when The Bears beat the Skins in a tight game at RFK Stadium. And Joe Theismann was asked about the lost? Because the Bears were the Dog! Joe stated the Bears played a tough game! During the game, Bears had knocked out their punters! And Theismann has to punt the ball! He said that Jim McMahon wasn't anybody that kids so look up too! The reporters all ran over to the Bears locker room to tell Jimmy! His response was "Well I got nothing to say to a guy that can only punt the football a yard" that CMTFU! Man I loved Jimmy Mac!

Walter Payton played on a horsebleep team for his first 7 seasons. The entire Bears offense was Payton left, Payton right, Payton up the middle. Still he was by fat the best RB in the NFL. Then, when the Bears finally got a couple of decent o-lineman and McMahon, Walter showed that he could pretty much do anything on a football field but was past his prime. At Jackson St. he kicked and punted. The man was and will always be the greatest all-round football player that ever lived. Had he played in a dynamic offense like SF he probably wouod have had 25K yards from scrimmage. May he RIP.

I'm glad Jim pointed out how unwatchable the NFL has become due to the moronic celebratory photo's in the endzone. Of course there are more reasons why the NFL sucks to day (Goodell, BLM slogans, anti-white rhetoric, color commentators who don't speak English, etc...) but that's a good example. God, I miss the 80's...

McMahon was never "the greatest" quarterback, mediocre at best, but that defense, Payton, the offensive line, made him look better than he was and the Bears won the Superbowl. It's more about the ingredients than how one individual plays.
