Jim Reeves' No. 1 Fan | BBC Archive presents...

Maureen Marsh set the standard when it comes to super-fans. She was first bought to TV fame in a 1973 episode of Man Alive called You Made Me Love You. A devotee of Jim Reeves, she wrote poems for him, she listened to his records on repeat, and she has married a man called Jim, in honour of the singer. Reeves had died in a plane crash in 1964, but that hadn't dampened Maureen's fascination.
Fourteen years later, an episode of People took the story up again. Had the couple's proposed move to America (to be close to Reeves' grave) happened? Did Maureen's heart still melt when his records played? Or had things taken a different turn?

So unusual. I am used to seeing stuff like this involving Elvis, The Beatles, etc...but interesting it was Jim Reeves. He definitely had a wonderful wonderful voice. Interesting. I wonder if she had not stumbled onto Jim Reeves' music if she would have attached herself to someone else in the same way. Fascinating.

Via an archived 28 March 1977 Guardian article on Jim Reeves fans in the UK; She no longer goes to the United States because she now thinks that Jim is with her, in the form of a shirt he once wore and which Mrs Marsh keeps lying on the bed beside her. According to the News of the World, Mrs Marsh said: "I am certain that my little son was conceived through Jim Reeves, with my husband as the intermediary". The boy was called James Travis Reeves Marsh. 😮

This is one of the most fascinating pieces of video I have ever seen - to live with such a passion just fascinates me, and I believe those who do it have nothing to be ashamed of, but are frowned upon and kept isolated from others and are treated as aliens. Her intentions do her and others around her no harm, why not let her live her unique life? It's unfortunate that her husband never loved her, but that occurs in many marriages, she never hurt her husband and he never hurt her, they just weren't right for each other - she was in love with Jim Reeves, so what? We should accept anybody who has good intentions - we should never put people down for what or who they like - but we do - day after day - even in such a flourished era.

I feel sorry for both Jim and Maureen. Jim seems to love Maureen, but she loves only Jim Reeves. A man she can never have. She can't adjust to that reality. Jim Marsh loves a woman who will never love him back. It's very sad.

Me and my twin ardent Jim Reeves fans, and we are from Australia. If we had a chance we would have been there everyday too, but Hey is are mento in music and to us we treat him and respect him for who and what Hey is. We to play his music morning noon and night, that’s all we listen too. Gentleman. Jim Reeves has left such a hold on us, Even we can’t. Understand, we have visited his memorial eight times we we be going there again and again. His family has been very nice to us, and treat us very well when we are there,To us Carthage is our second home. Gentleman Jim Reeves has a special place in our hearts.
