Before the show, Brian overheard the judges saying "! We're gonna nail Jim!" Brian gave them a confused look and asked "What do you mean you're gonna nail Jim?" When Brian tried to reassure Jim. During the commercial break, producer Nigel Lythgoe took him offstage and screamed at him for trying to make Jim feel better. He said "What the f--- are you doing?!!! You didn't even once mention what Simon said!!!" Brian said "Hold on a second!!! Just to make sure I understand you!!! If these kids come back feeling like s--t, I have to make sure that they continue to feel like s--t!!!" Then Nigel got in his face, poked him in the chest, and screamed in his face "Your goddamn f---in right!!!"

I don't hate this performance actually. What irritates me is how Ryan kept bringing it up that Simon hated Jim's performance (even in the results show).

I think it's because this was season 1 and this was the very first group performing for votes... it was the very first night of voting EVER for the show. And Jim was second to perform. So I think Simon was trying to make a point and was trying to set the standard to kind coach America how to vote lol. I think if Jim had performed later that night and not second, Simon might have been a bit less harsh.
