At the latch end (under the front of the hood), tie on a piece of parachute cord on the cable end. Wrap the end in duct tape. Then, when you pull the cable out, the para cord will follow the path so the new cable gets routed same as the old. Tie the paracord on the new cable, duct tape it, and pull it through.

Quick tricks & tips... Mark the latch assembly position before disassembling. Mark the relative position of the latch to the support structure to aid in alignment during reassembly. I typically make 3 or 4 scribe lines in the vertical and horizontal planes. Note and mark any shims and their position that may be present when disassembling.

It goes through the fender well, not easy access like on this Jeep. It is a big job to replace, got to take off the front left wheel, and the inner fender plastic cover, etc.... Cant it be bypassed, to just pop the hood just from the latch on the hood? It is 14yo, nothing to steal in it, and i have an alarm on it, so if anyone knows this 'lock' isnt working, they must be desperate, to steal an Aveo engine part?!!

The fix is fairly easy though. Simply drill out the broken bolts and put new bolts, washers and nuts in the holes to remount the hood latch. You will probably have to make some final adjustments to get the hood to latch securely. Thanks for watching!

My 94 F-250 was easier than the video. Nothing to unbolt up front except the hood latch itself (2 screws). In the cab, pull out a brush plug (get a thumbnail under the cap and pull straight. Make sure it's warm. Old plastic can be brittle. The inside trim part is tucked under a dashboard piece at top and the rubber threshold strip at the bottom. Remove the front three screws on the rubber and lift. The inside trim piece can move forward at the bottom end, and you don't even need to loosen the dashboard screw. After that, it's two Phillips screws to remove the whole inside-the-cab handle assembly, and you can pull the cable all; the way out. Tie a piece of parachute cord on the front end of it, and you don't have to memorize the routing. Tie the same piece on the new cable and it gives you a way to pull it through places it would be hard to push.

Hi Jim - Used this video to change my sister's hood release cable and ran into two issues. One, now the hood will not close. Could it be that the latch is misaligned? I've lowered the hood and the latch and U seem to line up but latch will not open to accept the U . Second the soft plug insert that closes the pass through for the cable will not seed properly. I can't reach it the engine area because of ignition wires sitting on top of the access point. Any ideas?
@WrenchinUpwithJimBates8 жыл бұрын
Hi Darlean - Yes, the hood latch could be misaligned. It's a common situation and the latches are designed to be moved around a bit to get them into alignment. If the plug doesn't seat properly, and it's the right cable for the application, you could try to lubricate it with silicone spray to help wiggle it into place from the passenger side of the firewall. I hope that helps. Thanks for watching!

pulling the cable doesn't release my hood!

And...............?
@marks34788 жыл бұрын
Jim Bates, I was trying to explain that when I pulled the cable with pliers, my hood latch still wouldn't release. I ended up getting a helper pull on the cable and I tugged on the hood until it released. It was the hood latch that was sticking. I applied some lube and it works fine now.

@@marks3478 if you can get the hood up where do you put the lube, I have a 2003 Toyota Sienna

@@donna8826 , On the release mechanism under the hood. For me part of the problem is that the cable has stretched as well.

You mean you don't take the latch out and replace it with hood pins like the previous idiot that owned my car?
@WrenchinUpwithJimBates5 жыл бұрын
Hi - Thanks for watching! Um, yeah. As a side note, I've seen cars with tiny pad locks in the hood pins too.

It's a great video and I've figured what I need to do and this was a good basis to look at my replacement. Thank you Jim. I'll be sure to do a little how2 video just incase.

You are welcome! If you want, you can post your video here too when you are ready as it will probably be helpful to other folks with the Cayenne. Here's a link to a battery replacement video I did for the Cayenne that you may be interested in. kzbin.info/www/bejne/maS0enaBrpqCgLM

Ford Canada is charging me $700.00 dollars to do this on my 2013 Escape. They say its 2 hours of labour cost....
@WrenchinUpwithJimBates8 жыл бұрын
Hi Mary - Wow! Since a replacement cable with handle costs about $40.00 at the parts store, $330.00 an hour for labor does seem high indeed. But then again, I'm no expert. Just sayin............ Thanks for watching!
@marybrown95428 жыл бұрын
Hi thanks for responding so fast. I do live in Toronto , Canada and things are a little more expensive here. But I do believe the dealership is charging way to much. They say it 2 hours to fix the leaver and cable. I just call a friend's mechanic and he quoted me $160.00 for parts and labour to fix it. So I guess, I am gonna have to go with a plan and get them to lower the price.
