At the latch end (under the front of the hood), tie on a piece of parachute cord on the cable end. Wrap the end in duct tape. Then, when you pull the cable out, the para cord will follow the path so the new cable gets routed same as the old. Tie the paracord on the new cable, duct tape it, and pull it through.

Quick tricks & tips... Mark the latch assembly position before disassembling. Mark the relative position of the latch to the support structure to aid in alignment during reassembly. I typically make 3 or 4 scribe lines in the vertical and horizontal planes. Note and mark any shims and their position that may be present when disassembling.

I love it how casually they acknowledge how manufacturer produced part on a $30k + car breaks while being normally exploited. If you think about it there is nothing normal about it. Just happened to me today on VW CC. I pulled and the lever snapped. Granted, I am a superman, but really?! Parts stores must be working with QC departments lol

What do you do if the cable itself pops out of the latch but it still works. The other day I pushed in my parking break and my cable popped out. The cable works and does not need to be replaced i just need to know how to put it back in the latch.

Fixed mine today. I couldn't get the hood to unlock, seemed like it was broken. I sprayed some olive oil under the hood where the latch is. I then pushed on the hood and it unlocked, then I was able to lift the hood and sprayed the area a bit more, wiped off the excess and closed the lid, it now works. So happy. My car is a 2003 Toyota Sienna. Hope this helps somebody as this is an easy fix if this works for you.

@WrenchinUpwithJimBates
@WrenchinUpwithJimBates 10 ай бұрын
Hi - Thanks for watching! The procedure in this video is for a hood that will not unlock because of a broken cable. When the hood will not lock down, the usual problem is a sized up hood latch. A liberal amount of a penetrating oil (I like PB Blaster) will usually free up the mechanism.

Can you by pass this interior hood release lever? Why is it there anyway?? Mine is now loose or slack, it is taking 4-6 pulls to get the hood to pop on my 2006 Aveo. It isn't broken off. It goes through the fender well, not easy access like on this Jeep. It is a big job to replace, got to take off the front left wheel, and the inner fender plastic cover, etc.... Cant it be bypassed, to just pop the hood just from the latch on the hood? It is 14yo, nothing to steal in it, and i have an alarm on it, so if anyone knows this 'lock' isnt working, they must be desperate, to steal an Aveo engine part?!!

Hi - broken hood release mechanism bolts on older vehicles is not uncommon in shops, even when using a liberal supply of PB Blaster or your favorite stuff for loosening rusty nuts and bolts. The fix is fairly easy though. Simply drill out the broken bolts and put new bolts, washers and nuts in the holes to remount the hood latch. You will probably have to make some final adjustments to get the hood to latch securely. Thanks for watching!

My 94 F-250 was easier than the video. Nothing to unbolt up front except the hood latch itself (2 screws). In the cab, pull out a brush plug (get a thumbnail under the cap and pull straight. Make sure it's warm. Old plastic can be brittle. The inside trim part is tucked under a dashboard piece at top and the rubber threshold strip at the bottom. Remove the front three screws on the rubber and lift. The inside trim piece can move forward at the bottom end, and you don't even need to loosen the dashboard screw. After that, it's two Phillips screws to remove the whole inside-the-cab handle assembly, and you can pull the cable all; the way out. Tie a piece of parachute cord on the front end of it, and you don't have to memorize the routing. Tie the same piece on the new cable and it gives you a way to pull it through places it would be hard to push.

Hi Jim - Used this video to change my sister's hood release cable and ran into two issues. One, now the hood will not close. Could it be that the latch is misaligned? I've lowered the hood and the latch and U seem to line up but latch will not open to accept the U . Second the soft plug insert that closes the pass through for the cable will not seed properly. I can't reach it the engine area because of ignition wires sitting on top of the access point. Any ideas?
@WrenchinUpwithJimBates
@WrenchinUpwithJimBates 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Darlean - Yes, the hood latch could be misaligned. It's a common situation and the latches are designed to be moved around a bit to get them into alignment. If the plug doesn't seat properly, and it's the right cable for the application, you could try to lubricate it with silicone spray to help wiggle it into place from the passenger side of the firewall. I hope that helps. Thanks for watching!

Hi - Thanks for watching! Have you checked a service/repair manual for your vehicle? There may be a procedure listed there.

Hi - Thanks for watching! If the cable is broken under the hood somewhere I suggest that you refer to a service/repair manual (available from the vehicle's dealership parts department, auto parts stores and some public libraries) for the repair procedure. You will probably have to take a lot of stuff apart to get to the hood latch.

Hi - Thanks for watching! Hopefully this video will provide you with enough information for you to determine whether or not you can replace a broken hood release cable in your vehicle. A service/repair manual for the vehicle, available at the dealership and auto parts stores, will be very helpful as well.

@@WrenchinUpwithJimBates It's a company vehicle that I just got assigned so I will try to do the repairing on my own without getting in trouble, I do pull cables for living so every time that I see someone pulling a cable without living a pull string behind!! In my case is just the handle that needs to be repaired, I hope. You guys made it looks very easy so I will give it a try.

Theres got to be a easier way of repairing a broken release handle than to replace the whole cable. If not I'll just keep using my pliers for the hood release 😁

Hi - Thanks for watching! The cable is being removed from the latch at 2:08. There was no metal plate on this vehicle, so I suggest that you refer to a service/repair manual for the vehicle to get that information.

Considering how long it has been since cars have been in prduction, these minor problems should not exist. The manufacturer should pay for any repairs of catches, cables and fundamental features that break due to their failure to refine and improve the standards.

Yeah, and watch the price of vehicles skyrocket AND their replacement parts due to wear and tear. "Tire shops should replace tires for free because the technology of tires has not progressed that much since tires for vehicles were invented". What a profoundly idiotic thought.

Jim Bates, I was trying to explain that when I pulled the cable with pliers, my hood latch still wouldn't release. I ended up getting a helper pull on the cable and I tugged on the hood until it released. It was the hood latch that was sticking. I applied some lube and it works fine now.

Hi thanks for responding so fast. I do live in Toronto , Canada and things are a little more expensive here. But I do believe the dealership is charging way to much. They say it 2 hours to fix the leaver and cable. I just call a friend's mechanic and he quoted me $160.00 for parts and labour to fix it. So I guess, I am gonna have to go with a plan and get them to lower the price.
