Occasionally spraying the latch release mechanism with penetrating oil such as WD-40 can eliminate many problems like that. It's also a good idea for door locks, the ignition lock, door hinges, the trunk locking mechanism and any other mechanism on you car that can wear or get rusty. Five or ten minutes every six months lubricating all your car's mechanisms can save you a lot of trouble down the road.

2 tips to make this repair alittle easier. 1) Attach the new cable to the old one before pulling the old one out, works like fish tape. 2) (Optional) Buy a cable lube injector. Most mechanics (especially those at dealerships) do not do repairs, they replace assemblies. Magic words: serviced as a unit.
@bartscanland94155 жыл бұрын
@Thomas Headley dealerships don't want cars just hanging around and they don't want them coming back due to a "bad" repair. If the part is replaced, both the customer and the dealer have the peace of mind that the problem is "solved". Plus the customer is in and out in a reasonable amount of time, increasing customer satisfaction. Which would be more profitable, one car that takes 3 hours to repair with $30 in parts or 3 cars that take an hour to replace $100 assemblies?
@simoncossettini96805 жыл бұрын
Good one Scotty. I had similar problem on 2001 a4 the interior plastic handle was broken . The reason they break and cables break is sometimes because the latch in front gets corroded and stiff due to weather, snow salt etc... so easy maintenance is to clean and apply grease to moving latch parts making sure the thing moves easily and force wd40 or spray lube into the cable shield using the tiny tube on spray tip and tape it to cable / shield joint. Then pull the cable back and forth until it loosen up. After that the thing moved so well it was possible to open the hood easily even though half the plastic handle had been broken.

Only good Chevy out there is a 2003 Chevy Trail Blazer. I had one and it went 319,000 Miles.

If you have this problem on a 2004 Lincoln LS I just completely dissembled the housing and took out four bolts and got the hood open
@SupportThe0ppositeNPC5 жыл бұрын
Its better if you cant open the hood because than you wont have to check anything in there. Boom

Don't forget to mark the location of the latch so it closes properly. It can be too high or too low, or L&R. I used to adjust these at GM for good fit.

I replaced the cable on my '85 S-10 and I am a 75+ year old woman. It was an easy fix.

IKR!.... i thought he was going to explain that these cables are often really greasy. the frayed metal theory made no sense to me.

I did this just yesterday with my Volvo 850. Before I pulled out the old cable (my cable was broken right near the pull handle) I attached the new cable with electrical tape like Scotty did and pulled it back through to the engine compartment. It saved SO much time because there is literally no room under there to get your hands in there. I was done with my new cable install in 1 hour.

Love the reality un like other help videos where everything goes according to the tutorial. I've had this happened to my dad's car. So pretty helpful. Thanks

Very pragmatic video: showing the easiest way first to diagnose which is causing the problem before moving to other steps.

Great information Scotty- one time my emergency brake went out and I replaced the whole mechanism with brake cable . Whew...
@Inkling7775 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I had a similar problem because stupidly I'd let the hood slam down when the radiator cap was resting close to the hood lock, jamming the lock shut. With the front grill off, I loosened the latch enough to free the hood so I could get at that radiator cap.

Pro tip for you. Tie a piece of mason’s line to the cable when you pull it out and you can simply tie it to the new one and pull it back through. Works great on motorcycles when you can’t get your hand in there where it goes

If this happens to you, before trying anything, ask another person to pull the little lever/handle inside the car while you pull the hood up. It happened to me today, something was stuck and the hood didn't unlock, it just needed an little assistance. They I sprayed lub all over the latch and it's working fine.

You gave me an idea for 2 other repairs and maybe another project. Thank you! My hood release cable currently is fine.

this was great !! i can get my hood up;but the latch won't grab it to keep it closed~ so i'll be watching this a few times~ hope my cable is not broke, just stuck somewhere. maybe i can release it somehow. in any case this video was great, and easy to understand. thanks for doing it

Hi Scotty, the next time you do a front hood cable release repair get a piece of #12 THHN electrical wire that is about 3 feet longer then the latch release cable. When you get to the point where you are going to pull the broken cable out of the front sheet metal securely tape one end of the #12 wire to the end of the cable before you pull the broken cable out. Then gently pull the cable through from the passenger compartment you will draw the wire through the same path (routing if you prefer) that the cable is suppose to follow. Be careful not to allow the tape bundle to get hung up an any sharp edges. Then untape the #12 wire from the broken cable and retape the end of the #12 wire to the new cable. After you have the new cable securely taped to the new cable gently pull the new cable back through the same path that the original cable was routed through. Be careful not to allow the tape bundle to get hung up on any sharp edges. This is similar to how electricians pull wire through conduit. You may even be able to use an electrician's fish tape if you can find a small one. This should be a lot easier then trying to find the correct path with a wire rod from the passenger compartment.

Another lil trick! I recently replaced that cable on my daughters car. Tie like kite string to it while it's under the hood pull it out and tie the string to the new cable to pull it back in. I sprayed the latch with Blaster Silicone

In the first year the plastic pull tab on the interior side of the hood cable broke off in my Ridgeline. I used a gas size hose clamp and a piece of parachute cord to clamp a pull loop on the end. Works fine.

I am facing this exact job on my son's 2007 Focus. Thanks for this great video.
@bobmcl24065 жыл бұрын
Did the job, and it went well. Thanks to Scotty, but also thanks to the comments posted here. I used the tip of tying a feed wire to the old cable before I pulled it through the firewall. Made it much easier to get the new cable back through the other direction.
@topherd10115 жыл бұрын
Either way will work but I generally tape an end of the new cable to the old cable and pull it through when removing the old one. Thanks Scotty!

Great video Scotty. Reminds me of those older VW's when the accelerator cable would let go. Weird feeling to lose your gas pedal in traffic.😲😎

My brother had a old lady where the throttle linkage stuck with a 70's Buick in the 80s at his first mechanical gig at a Texaco station. That was a site to see. Hopped the corner and went through the garage door into the car bay.
