How to change oil on a 2009 Toyota Sienna with a close look at the paper type filter that Toyota is using. As per gojo238, " most people recommend the KD Tools #3253 filter wrench. it's 65 mm. This tool seems to only be available online, but is readily available from Ebay for less than $10, often with free shipping."

A really big pipe wrench would likely work or you might try wrapping the filter housing in a small towel and wedging it between a door and the door jamb( if you have a helper). You might also be able to wrap the filter housing in a ratchet strap and pin it tightly in the corner of a cyclone fence or use the weight of a car's tire to pin the straps tight. Good luck and best wishes !

Nicely done video. Thanks. If you use the specialized oil filter housing tool to tighten the oil filter housing, you will be able to get that inner train plug off the oil filter housing next time without taking the whole housing off. No big deal, of course, but it's a little neater drain process.

thank you Jim. I don't think my oil change places have been changing the filter, and they want over $70. to do the job, so I'm going to try to do it myself on my wife's 09 Sienna. I always do my own oil changes on my own car, my '66 Chevy Corvair Monza.

There is one mistake, time 4:44 when you screw back the filter housing you can not use the the little cap 3/8 opening to tighten the whole thing, because you're gonna put too much pressure on the little cap unnecessarily, next time you won't be able to release the drain cap first because it is too tight and the whole filter is gonna rotate causing the oil to spill on your hand which defeats the purpose of the little cap and plastic tube theory. There is a special tool for this kind of filters

I got mine at the Toyota dealer... but you might try turning your filter first with a 3/8" socket driver and a 4" extension. If it turns, you may not even need the wrench. I'm not sure of the size the wrench. You may be able to contact the dealer and find out the size... but I think it is exclusive to Toyota and may be the only place that you can get one. Best wishes !

I have one thing to add. Just prior to re-installing the oil filter/canister, fill canister to the 3/4 (approx) amount with the new oil you will be using. Just prevents it from running dry for the first few seconds when the car is restarted.

hi Jim, good video. !!. Q: when you reassemble everything with filter housing and you tighten it on the engine, should you have used another type of tool to tighten it as apposed to using the smaller plug, to turn the whole unit?. Oil filter cap wrenches for Toyota are $10 to $25 on Amazon. Just be sure to get one made from forged aluminum and not cast aluminum. AND buy the right one. One is made for the 1.8 liter engine found in the Corolla and some other models. The larger one fits all other Toyota engines with the cartridge system.

Please don't use Supertech oil. I have done testing and its no better than recycled used name brand oil. If your car is new and in good shape use good standard oil. If it burns oil, but works great, use Pennzoil. Pennzoil burns even and you can add at a regular interval. Works great in old lawn mowers, and my old 1980's gmc truck. I use Amsoil XL in my Sienna and Ford E450 in the winter. I live near Lake Superior. I don't want to change oil in -20 below weather. Fresh Supertech oil rattles my engine to death in winter. In summer I use Valvoline, Mobile, Castrol... whatever is on sale. But not Supertech!!!

The whole oil filter cap comes off with the oil filter drainplug cause someone didn't follow torque specs on the previous oil change. Or because someone screwed it on by using a ⅜ inch ratchet or extension on the filter drainplug to tighten the filter cap assembly. Hmmm, I wonder who did that and just taught everyone watching this video to do the same thing.

You can buy the tool for removing the oil housing at Autozone and it fits perfectly even to the little fins way on top for 9.99 so don't need to go online to buy that. Also the plug and filter did not come off that easily on mine so if you have a torquing wrench or a pipe to extend your handle to get more torque, that really helps a lot too.

You are not suppose to tighten the oil filter cap assembly by using your ⅜ inch extension. That's why when you try to remove the oil filter drainplug the whole thing comes off. Duh! Tighten the oil filter cap with your oil filter cap wrench to 18 ft.lbs. Tighten the oil filter drainplug to only 10 ft.lbs. using the ⅜ inch extension.

The inner cap on the filter housing is a nuisance. It is intended to be tightened to 9.5 ft-lbs, with the outer housing tightened to 19 ft-lbs. So, theoretically, a force of between 9.5 and 19 ft-lbs should loosen it independently. In reality, however, the entire assembly comes off. The only point I can see in the inner cap is to limit spillage; its easier IMO to just wear gloves, anticipate the spillage, and remove the main cap, and forget the nuisance inner cap.
