I read a very cool story about Hendrix. Jimi was playing a club in London a day or 2 after The Beatles released Sgt Pepper's. In the audience was Paul McCartney and George Harrison. Jimi gave them the ultimate tribute. With almost no time, Jimi nailed Sgt Pepper's live for Paul and George. They couldn't believe he learn their song and played with live for them. When I was in my early teens in the mid 70 , having someone paint your favorite rock star and / or favorite album on the back of a denim jacket was considered really cool. I had Jimi Hendrix sitting on a cloud with Angel Wings playing the Harp. In my life time and naturally in my opinion , 2 guitarists changed the way guitarists looked at their instrument. Eddie Van Halen and this bad ass...Jimi Hendrix. I'm 60, and have played an album by Jimi Hendrix at least once a week since I'm 15 If not for Jimi Hendrix rock n roll would all sound like The Kinks.

I saw Jimi at Newark Symphony Hall in Newark, NJ, on April 5, 1968, the night after Martin Luther King was killed. He played a white Strat with a rosewood fretboard, a sunburst Jazzmaster, and the mid-50's black Les Paul Custom. I have photos of all three guitars.

I can' t prove anything, but I have it in good certainty that there were two identical olympic white Strats after 68 - the woodstock one, and the maui/fehmarn one. The one used at the royal albert hall may be the woodstock one. The woodstock one was used from 68 to mid 69 or so. The other one was used from 69-70 until he died. There is some evidence about it online, I'm not the only one who believes this. I've always felt that the second olympic white strat was much yellower. But I believe that the guitar displayed at the museum today is indeed the woodstock strat, it now has yellowed considerably.
@davegilbertmusic
@davegilbertmusic 5 жыл бұрын
You brought up the point that there were 2 white CBS maple cap Strats. If you look at what we commonly call the "Woodstock Strat" back at the Royal Albert Hall rehearsals in Feb '69 you can clearly see a repair job done on the back of the neck right behind the 1st fret. Throughout the 1969 US tour you can see the repair job. However, once he's at Woodstock the repair job is no longer visible which leads me to believe that it received a new neck, or is a different guitar. Also, in your part one you left out a PreCBS white Strat that he used from around Oct '67 to March or so '68. Instead of having the typical knifeswitch it had 3 mini toggles. It also had a trem unit but no whammy bar. From what I've read the pick-ups had been hot-rodded. If you look at photos from the Olympia in France mid Oct '67 you can see several photos of it. Thanks again, I enjoyed both videos!

Thanks for another great one brother. Chronologically, I thought Jimi was well past his days of smashing and/or burning Strats. Perhaps Mitch indeed said that, but in jest I'm thinking. Whatever the case, Jimi is, and always has been, my guitar hero; over 40 years now. I'm watching this as I glance over at my white/maple Strat next to one of the many Hendrix posters in my studio. Full disclosure - I'm playing an SG right now. So sue me! 😂🤣 All joking aside, on a desert island, I'm Strat guy. I might get bored and adding a whammy into my playing is fun here and there. And then there's the durability factor. 😉

So the strat on display at the museum belonged to Jimi (serial number) but there is evidence that there were two identical guitars, one for the road and one for the studio. Mitchell's story is poignant, Jimi's last performance before he died, gift honouring a newborn. As the guitar in the musuem was found "around" the time of his death at Electric Lady, it is possible that Mitchell did not actually receive the guitar until after Jimi died but the promise was made when reported, everyone heard it, was known by his entourage. Mitchell compressed the timeline for brevity. Therefore, i) Mitchell was given the "wrong" guitar (Mitchell had no reason to doubt it was "the" guitar, as if he was going to check for scratches at that time) or ii) the 2nd "scratch" strat does not exist, perhaps as the scratch was fixed by Mitchell but he later realized the alteration would lower its value, stayed mum iii) the actual strat is missing, all we have is the studio strat. Hence, more evidence to establish two strats (one for the studio and one for the road) must be found.

You really hit the nail on the head with your hypothesis - I am thinking about doing a follow up video about this as i could have gone more in depth into this - also my good friend who was working for Fender at the time of the auction says those photos of the back of the headstock do not really prove anything. Thanks!

@@TheGuitarShow Thank you, a good video provides the viewer with something to think about and this one certainly achieves that. Its like a criminal case, need to get past the "reasonable doubt", e.g., maybe Mitchell fixes the scratch. The grain on wood is like a fingerprint, Woodstock footage of Jimi playing has many close-ups of the neck, a good shot of the museum neck and the Woodstock footage neck is do-able.

I think that the woodstock strat and the white strat with the mark are both the same guitar. I looked at some minor details regarding the woodstock strat and the white strat he played in 1970. What I noted is that the the woodstock strat is missing a screw on the second hole of the pickguard on the left side from the bridge, and the neck pickup is slanted downward. You can see that those minor details are found on the woodstock strat and the pictures of Jimi playing this white strat in 1970. I just think that Jimi never cleaned his guitars and that it might just be a marking that can be rubbed off. I have also noted the same scrape marks on the body as the woodstock strat which leads me to believe they are the same guitar. However thats my observation, I could be wrong and it is fascinating that it is a mystery.

Hendrix had another black Flying V that he painted up psychedelic. The paint kind of looked similar to the sacrificed Strat at Montery. I read an article a few years back, it was located, but some idiot paited it red, over the Hendrix paint. A guitar luthier remove the paint but the original finish w Hendrix paint bled through into the wood and the luthier could then refinish it to the orignal Hendrix state. I'm sure the article is floating around online. I think might have been a Guitar Player mag I had read this.

He told me that Fender had designed it for Jimi, and then made a dozen or so more of them, of which mine was one. It was supposedly a pre-CBS vintage. Unfortunately, a year later, while I was attending a Bob Seager concert, a local drug addict broke into my house and stole that guitar, and I never saw it again. I was actually so upset, I stopped playing entirely...

Re: Woodstock strat. Note the position of the string tree in relation to the tuning keys. It is almost in line with the lowest tuning key. Very unusual. The tree is usually in line with the 2nd lowest key. (Cool vid!!)

Good eye 1:19 guitarguy382! I imagine Jimi utilized every trick in his bag to create his totally unique sound. Also, Jimi changed the G string gauge from the standard pack of strings to a lower gauge. Like two B string gauges, because he thought the G string gauge was too G Dominate. Thanks for the Jimi Video's 'Guitar Show'!

(Adding) I've never seen another strat - from any period - where the string tree was in that location. It's so close to the nut......and I think it was installed at that location at the factory. It doesn't appear to have been relocated......there's no 'prior' hole visible.

Keep in mind...Strats are bolt on necks...players regularly swapped bodies and necks....The Woodstock Strat could be the same neck but swapped out body....same color, but in better condition...just a thought.

I never thought Jimi looked or sounded comfortable with a Gibson, or hum-buckers. Jimi was a dedicated Strat man with a trem, allowed him to be versatile, creative, flamboyant. Gibsons were way too conservative for such a genius.
@johnnymindfunk
@johnnymindfunk 3 жыл бұрын
the humbuckers have a warmer tone than the Strat. good for blues. the Strat had more "bite" which is why he sounded so good while running the Uni-Vibe and the Wah through it. but i'm guessing on the Gibsons he didn't use those same effects so much and just relied on the Fuzz. i think the humbuckers have better sustain too. I use an SG and a Strat, and they are different beasts. I can hold a note for 6 days on that SG sometimes while running through a Philosopher's Tone and Boss Overdrive.

I totally agree because the Gibsons did not have have that Bite Hendrix wanted, he always wanted to go a little bit higher and make it cut through, make it scream and he just couldn't get it out of the Gibson's.

Where is the Blond Telecaster Jimi Hendrix used to record Purple Haze and Fire ? This has been proved that Hendrix used a Telecaster for recording Purple Haze and Fire. There is a book called The Grail guitar the Search for Jimi Hendrix Purple Haze Telecaster by Chris Adams. In that book its proven Jimi used a Blond Telecaster to record Purple Haze and Fire. Also the Band members and the Studio technician has. Stated that Jimi Hendrix used a Blond Telecaster for recording Purple Haze and Fire. The Telecaster was loaned to Jimi Hendrix by a friend of Noel Redding after Jimis Strat had broken down after a gig and They needed to record those 2 songs quickly. Other songs that Jimi might have used a Telecaster on are Hej Joe ( rythm part) Thats almost proven. Then there are the very long standing rumours he used a Telecaster for The Wind Cries Mary, Little Wing and Crosstown Traffic. The rumours and almost sure Hej Joe Telecaster is one thing if it is not mentioned, but Purple Haze and Fire has been proven Jimi Hendrix used a Blond Telecaster on. Many say that his 2 first albums were recorded with a Gibson SG. After all Jimi Hendrix Started playing professionally 1959 but it took untill 1966 for him to get a Stratocaster. He used lots of Fender Jazz masters, Gibson Les Paul, Gibson SG and the Flying V during his career, not to mention many more guitars not associated with Fender. Even after those first 2 albums Where Jimi used a Gibson SG to record he kept recording with other guitars like the Gibson Les Paul, The Gibson Flying V and the Fender Telecaster mentioned.

i think he was used to accessing the controls that way, and having it re-strung upside down does change the timbre of the instrument slightly. i'm guessing he was just more comfortable with the Strats that way. The SG and Flying V would nearly the same lefty/righty but it made a large difference with the Strat.
