I used to own the 1960 Gibson ES-5 Switchmaster pictured at the top at 8:33, got it in 69', sold in 71' to Prune Music in the Bay area, Jimmy bought it there. I was the one who switched out the truss rod cover for a Super 400 cover and had the covers for the PAFs replated in gold when I bought it in 1969.

@@Johngonefishin Hi John, ok! I remember the first time I saw a Switchmaster, when I bought the "Coda" album back in the '80s and saw the b&w photo -- one of my favorites of them - in the gatefold collage, where Jimmy's holding it. I noticed the six knobs and size of it and wanted to know what that big Gibson was! What a great guitar to have owned. Cheers! 👍

Great video, thanks for sharing. I love the fact that he used that old Harmony Sovereign. John Paul Jones used a Harmony batwing Mandolin to go with it. Also interesting that the #3 Les Paul was a Norlin era LP. A 3rd video would be cool. My friend got to see firsthand a 2 pickup black Les Paul Custom that he used on The Page/ Coverdale album, in Vancouver. The guitar now belongs to a studio there. I guess Page had given it to somebody there (at Bruce Fairbairn's old/ now defunct studio) after they finished that record. He also acquired a goldtop during that era, with some strange tuning system on the bridge. It is in the Page Coverdale videos, as well as No Quarter. I also noticed he replaced his 3 pickup LP Custom Black Beauty, as it was used during the o2 reunion, notably on For Your Life.

I saw them play in about 74 or 75. They were awesome, obviously. The thing which strikes me most about Page's playing isn't that he's the best at anything in particular, nor that he's the smoothest or slickest. He's none of those things. But he is (and maybe these days, sadly, we have to say was) one of the most versatile all-round rock guitarists. It probably stems from his studio session work, where he would have had to turn up, blend into and enhance the music of a whole range of musicians and styles. But basically he could play lead, riffs, acoustic, folk etc equally well and, when it came to playing live he could do that in an incredibly exciting way. I'd love to see him performing again but I doubt we'll see it happen, sadly.

I love hearing about the transactions between different musicians. In your last video about Jimmy's guitars, the story about every man and his dog using Keith Richards Les Paul was fascinating. It seems like back in the 1960's a lot of musicians seemed to give guitars to each other at random. Great video Ramon. Really enjoying your channel. Thanks.

@ Who got guitar lessons from Page?
@AnthonyMonaghan
@AnthonyMonaghan 4 жыл бұрын
@ So, he didn't give anyone personal lessons, just some random crap you thought you would throw up thinking it would make you look knowledgable when in fact it just made you look like an idiot. If I knew anything about Jimmy Page? Yeah, that's a good 14 year olds opening gambit when they're on the Blackfoot. He was one of a few with an acoustic...bullshit son. Ever heard of skiffle. Back when Page was learning guitar at school it was the biggest teen phenomenon in Britain and everyone and their brother owned a guitar, hence all the British guitarists that came along a decade later. So he was a guitar God when he was at school...have you seen the clip of him playing in his skiffle band at the tender age of 13 in 1957 (the year skiffle exploded in Britain with the broadcast of the T.V. programme The Six-Five Special) on the TV programme All Your Own , he can barely play the three rudimentary chords in the song, yet he's already a guitar God giving lessons? And finally, It Might Get Loud...correct me here but was that a documentary about three pivotal, pioneering musicians talking about how they wrote their most famous songs, or was it Jimmy Page giving Jack White and The Edge a 'guitar lesson'. So tell me again, who got personal guitar lessons from Jimmy Page?

I saw Led Zeppelin - a Day On the Green - Oakland Colosseum Summer of 1977. Page used that Burgundy Les Paul while playing No Quarter. He also used both sunburst Les Pauls throughout the show, his double neck (of course) and Dan Electro. He did not use his black telecaster that day. I guess it serves as a spare just like his burgundy LP.

The Lake Placid Blue Strat appears to be from 1962-- and not: 1964 as stated in the video. This is evidenced by the location of the upper middle pickguard screw location (between the neck & middle pickups), the wider "double dot" spacing at the 12th fret, and by the "slab" style Rosewood fretboard.It may sound "wonky", coming from a guitar nerd / collector, but I thought I should point that out, if only for the sake of accuracy.Thanks for your attention,John

I remember seeing Zep play in 1969 or 1970 at Boston Garden. That night Jimmy mostly played the black and white DanElectro, with and without the bow. I remember being amazed at the sounds he got out of that particle board guitar. I could be wrong about the material of the guitar, but that is what the one at Sears that I used to lay was made of. It's case also housed a small amplifier, and the whole setup sold for $69.95--back in the 60's

That type of 'Phase Cancellation' occurs when the treble and neck pickup are in near perfect balance and also is a T Top (low wind) pickup trait.. Pagey had the unconventional Low Wind 7.5k in the Bridge and Overwound 8.6k PAF in the neck (Set really low to balance) That 'Hollow Chirp' is nowhere near as pronounced when the bridge pickup is hotter (Modern Les Pauls) I demo Jimmy's Live Madison Square Garden tone on my channel

Another comment...there is no acoustic 12-string on "Thank You"...it's just acoustic 6-string and the Vox Phantom Electric XII. The Eko Ranger 12 string pictured was used on the session for "La La" according to the notes in the expanded reissue boxed set of the second album. The Giannini 12-strings (there were two different 12-string models and a 6-string model owned by Page) were likely bought in 1972...the Giannini would most likely not have been used to record "Tangerine", but it could possibly have been used to record the acoustic twelve string overdubs on "Over The Hills and Far Away"...or it may have only been used on tour in 1972 and never used on a recording.

Was that 1976 or so?) during the 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's, 2000's (divorced...broke & still missing everything!) Yeah...me and my HS guitar buddy were convinced back in the day that the solo on 'Heartbreaker' was unplayable/incomprehensible to mere mortal guitarists. Cheers! (Never went/been to the old arena. Why they have to demolish it? AmTrac?)

@@boboala1 The Zeppelin concert was April 15, 1977. Interestingly, there was no encore for two reasons. One, the building's furnace was out of control that night and the band was unhappy about the uncomfortable heat. Secondly, some guy in the upper deck was throwing strings of firecrackers into the crowd. It really ticked off Robert Plant. In spite of no encore, it was a bit of history for me. Pretty cool. Following the concert, I had a new appreciation for John Paul Jones. What a genius not only on bass but keys, too. Kiel Opera House is still here under a different name, THE BEST acoustics of just about any concert venue I've experienced. Saw many of my favorites there including Jeff Beck w Jan Hammer and Little Feat (with Lowell George). Yep, Heartbreaker is a tough one. Maybe just a bit easier with all of the KZbin 'How To's'? They demolished the old arena for several reasons. It was built in 1928 and it really was dated. Originally built for a national dairy show and convention? Anyway, it earned a reputation for its terrible acoustics as a concert venue. And yes, part of the light rail system took a section of the arena's parking lots, along with some condos. Are you still playing guitar or other? Best to you.

The Les Paul became my dream guitar when I was about 13 in 1977 for two reasons - 1) Ace Frehley of KISS 2) I saw this really cool picture on a magazine cover of this guy playing a Les Paul, I had no idea who the guy was but he looked so cool in that picture. He looked like he had just struck this big chord on the guitar and had one arm behind his back. Open shirt showing his bare chest with that rock start pursed lips and holding that guitar all slung low and mean. It wasn't until 2014 That I was finally able to buy my first Gibson Les Paul, sadly due to Gibson's issues I sold the guitar. I now own several Gibson and Epiphone Les Paul and I felt I finally fulfilled my childhood desire - but then the grand finale happened! One day I was walking through a local head shop and was looking for posters for my studio I am building. Thumbing through the big wall posters that were on a cardboard back there he was! That same guy, I never forgot that pose and knew it immediately... I recognized not only the poster immediately but now I knew who it he was, down at the bottom it read - Los Angeles 1972 , Jimmy Page. It's funny that even though I have known who Jimmy Page was since about 1978 I never realized it was him in that photo that had stuck in my mind for so long. To me, my opinion you are entitled to yours, Jimmy Page is THE number 1 greatest rock guitar player EVER. When you look at and compare his catalog of music who can compare with him? With the different styles he plays so easily and has recorded no other rock guitar player comes close. The best musicians are not the ones we see on stages, anyone who knows anything about music knows that session musicians are the real deal. Those are the real "great"players and Jimmy Page was one of the most sought after session players up until he joined the Yardbirds.

One correction...that blue Strat is not a 64. The neck is slab board and it has a spaghetti logo. 60-62 iirc. The pick guard has the pre mid 1963 screw placement on the top between the neck and middle pickups. And of course the obvious brass tip on the trem arm gives it away as a much later replacement.

Regarding the Gibson J200. Jimmy has said he borrowed this guitar not from Big Jim Sullivan but producer Mickie Most. Jeff Beck also used this J200 to record some of the acoustic tracks on the "Truth" album and the sleeve notes confirm this.

@The Guitar Show. Jimmy Page has One Wine Red 1969 or 1970 Les Paul Deluxe with a one piece mahogany neck, which he had to buy to replace the 1960 Les Paul Custom that was stolen in NYC a day before they were to play Madison Square Garden, at the end of their 1970 US Tour

@@TheGuitarShow You're so welcome. Although I've heard Page had a 2nd Red Les Paul with a B-Bender, when Led Zeppelin performed 2007 (I think) concert, Page used that 69-70 Les Paul because I could see the ''Pancake'' body during Kashmir. (And No B-Bender On It), which I'll add this about this LP, #1 it was originally a Goldtop & 2, the source I got a lot of JP's gear info from, claimed Page only used the Red LP briefly in 1970. Funny thing is, when His original #3 was supposedly stolen in New York City the day before the 2 Madison Square Garden Concerts, it was the end of the tour. So if it was in fact a Goldtop & also briefly used during the 1970 US Tour, I would have to say that the Les Paul stolen took place at the beginning of the US Tour, which would have given enough time to have it repainted. Other that that, Then this replacement #3 Les Paul was used briefly during the 70 tour with it's Goldtop Finish.... **Hope I haven't made things too confusing here..**, Dan

The red Les Paul that Page used for "Kashmir" at the 2007 O2 show does have a B-bender. It's the same red B-bender LP used in the "Unledded" performance of "Thank You", what he used with The Black Crowes, etc.

At 04:24 you speak of Jimmy's #3, a '69 deluxe, which has humbuckers but came stock with mini humbuckers. The next supposed deluxe also has full sized bobbins, so he must have routed the tops of both guitars, neither mods were mentioned.

Larry Love: #1Les Paul 1969-Mid 72: 2 X PAFs They had White Bobbins , Neck was Covered and was Hotter than the bridge by quite a bit. Bridge Pickup had White coils exposed.... Bridge Pickup started failing on the New Zealand/ Australia Tour 1972 and was repaired by Merv Carghill in Melbourne . The Bridge PAF was finally replaced with a T Top (7.6k) so again the bridge pickup was way lower powered than the neck... The Guitar now remained UNCHANGED throughout Zeppelin ( no switching, no Out of Phase).. 30 yrs later a Duncan went in...Push Pull switch... This was the guitar Edwin Wilson saw....At this point , it was quite different from the Zeppelin instrument... My Source?..CLIVE COULSON. . Clive ( A New Zealanders) was a customer of my shop .He was Jimmy's Guitar Tech/Road Crew in the Early 70s..I was a Gibson Custom Shop dealer in New Zealand.

The '64 Lake Placid Blue Strat seems to have a slab form rosewood neck...which would put it (the neck) from late '59 to mid '62. In late '62 Fender changed the rosewood caps to a veneer, curved variety instead of the flat laminated slabs. Do you notice this too, about Jimmy's Strat? What about the Olympic White Stratocaster he recorded Ten Years Gone with? Are you aware of this?

In a pretty recent interview (available here on youtube) he's stated that he had the Harmony Sovereign from the beginning, and used it as his basic writing tool - including the stuff he wrote whilst in the Yarbirds. He said that he used it as the basic writing tool for the first four Led Zep albums, and got the Martin around the time of the 4th album, which he then used in the fifth album. It's straight from the horse's mouth.

However, I think you could have skipped the remedial YB breakup/LZ formation stuff in favor of more guitar info? ;) Like the LP Custom that got stolen (the one you can see briefly in that early RAH concert), the other 50's 'burst Strat (maple neck, used on 'Dancing Days'), and the Danelectro. Btw, isn't it the blue Strat on 'For Your Life' and 'In The Evening'? Seems worthy of a mention! Oh, and the brown B-bender Tele is _all over_ In Through the Out Door, and was pretty much his main guitar in The Firm--I mean, we all know it, but still deserves pointing out in a vid such as this. Great info on the acoustic guitars in any case!
