My all time favorite Hendrix tune. This one shows his lyrical side more than his musical side. Yeah, it has some great guitar riffs but the lyrics paint a beautiful and touching picture. His voice is so under appreciated. Thank you for reacting to this song, it made my day so much brighter!

I have always loved SRV's homage to Jimi. Whether it's this one or "Voo-Doo Child" among others they are authentic to the spirit of the original and you can't really ask more than that of any Jimi cover. If you want to know just how much of an influence Jimi really was on SRV, just look at where the "whammy bar" is attached to SRV's guitar. It's at the TOP of the bridge plate, not at the bottom where it would normally be for a right handed player. If however you're a "lefty" in the years before left handed guitars were a thing so you just take a right handed Stratocaster and flip it over to play lefty the whammy bar is now a the top of the bridge plate. Which is where Jimi had it. There is no realy advantage to one side of the bridge plate or the other. It's merely a matter of personal preferemce, nothing more. All that to say that you really should investigate the music of Jimi Hendrix to compare the originals to their respective covers. You'll see what I mean about the whammy bar, too. His influence on the role of the electric guitar in modern music is unmatched. There is not a guitarist of the last 50 years that is not influenced by Jim Hendrix. It's like i hear/see people talking about the late Neil Peart. If Jimi isn't your favourite guitarist he's your favourite guitarist's favourite guitarist. Although in Jimi's case it probaly goes back an additional generation or so. As I have probably mentioned before I consider Jimi Hendrix to be the second most important American musician who has ever lived, behind only Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong. Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Robert Johnson fill out my personal "top 5" American musicians. Jimi is in good company indeed. At least in my book.

Not only did Jimi master the electric guitar and create a brand new style of playing the instrument at a young age, he wrote these incredible songs! I saw him twice in 1968, and it was an "experience" I will never forget .... For me, he remains the greatest electric guitarist/performer in the history of popular music ....

Also, his lyrics were very insightful! "and the smell of a world that's burned" and "maybe it's just a change of climate" from "Up From The Skies." Also "If I don't see you no more in this world, meet you in the next one and don't be late" from "Voodoo Chile."

It wasn’t Jimi’s decision to have the song short. That was his manager Chas Chandler. Awful idea. The song could go as long as 8 minutes.

Jimi always said he learned more guitar when he played in Nashville for a year after he left the Army, and it really shows because this is major pentatonic music and it's country to the marrow. Jimi's ballad style playing here ranks his rock playing, IMHO. RIP Jimi Hendrix, a son of Seattle.

You're right that Jimi's voice gets overshadowed by the guitar playing. As was mentioned, so do his beautiful lyrics. The guitar riffs might seem rather simple in this song, until you try to play them. I've been playing guitar for 50+ years and to this day I can play the notes, but I've never really been able to play the music. The influence that Jimi had on how we think of the role of guitar within the context of a band or a combo is literally unmatched by any other American musician. Electric or acoustic, Jimi expanded the boundaries of the role of the guitar in modern music more than anyone before or since.

must say you have the right version. so many have cover version its Stevy Ray Von . some can come close too Jimi s sound but never do it 100 percent . i feel Jimi was the best that ever did it . just think he was only around for few years so sad that he died so young . if he was still here he would still be blowing it away . and his style was so un othadox he just did what ever he wanted with guitar he was way ahead of the times

Song about his guardian-angel, his muse, his inspiration. Yes, you picked up the unique melody, Recording engineer said, "Jimi always kept an eye out for odd instruments that would be lying about the studio" and found the glockenspiel in Studio A. Jimi could play any instrument, and added the glockenspiel to the track.

Utterly beautiful Hendrix song - To me most of his softer songs ( Little Wing, Angel, Castles Made Of Sand) are about his mother. Apparently she was a very heavy drinker and was always out partying. She died very young because of the drink and he never really knew her as she kept leaving him with relatives. You can tell he really missed his moms love through his lyrics. Such a sad start in life, but his music expressed it all.

Awesome! Jimi Hendrix is the goat! "Little Wing" is a beautiful song, but it's way too short! The Hendrix estate is also notorious for blocking his music on KZbin, so I hope your review stays up. And that's a double shame because it cuts off sharing his music with so many young people today, songs like "Little Wing", "Castles Made of Sand", "The Wind Cries Mary", "Foxy Lady", "Hey Joe", "If Six Was Nine", "Love or Confusion", "3rd Stone from the Sun", "Purple Haze" -- second rate covers abound on KZbin, but the genuine articles have largely been lost in the digital wilderness.

This is one of Jimi's greatest songs...and, seeing a guitar behind you, look up the chord sequence. It's not too hard to play using any format, electric or acoustic, but the sequence is, shall we say, unusual. It comes out as bluesy, but I don't know of any other song that uses ANYTHING similar. I see you do SRV's version later; his version is taken from the Hendrix In The West live version by Jimi (you should listen to that one too), and expanded. Anyways, ENJOY, and keep great music alive!

Jimi Hendrix is considered the greatest guitarist in rock ‘n roll history. Most people go with Purple Haze, Voodoo Child or Foxey Lady as some of his best work. My personal favourite song is Little Wing because of how touching it is. But if there’s one thing that pisses me off about this song, it’s that it is way too short. You can blame Chas Chandler for that. Makes me want to smack him. This song should be no less than 5 minutes long. Side note: that chime is a glockenspiel and if I’m not mistaken it was Jimi that was playing.

Jimi was very insecure about his voice and his singing, so it seems like he was always holding something back..... I have heard him *growl* a bit, almost accidentally when pushing his voice, in a couple of live performances, and I wish he would've pushed a himself a little harder more often.
