Saw Jimi on my 14th birthday - June 22nd, 1969 @ "Newport Pop 69" in Granada Hills, California. On that day I became a guitarist & never held a straight job in my life! I'm 66 years old of this writing. Thanks Jimi! See you in heaven.

Electric guitar playing similar to this as a feature in popular music has been gone for at least 20 years now. Longer than that really. Rock is now a niche musical segment.

@@susanbucket3400 Yes, you are correct. But first there was Hendrix. Jimi laid the foundation for others to follow. Many did and brought us some incredible, historical guitar playing. Then there was VH less than a decade later who once again reinvented guitar as we know it. Yes, many incredibly gifted guitar players have existed since. But none have had the sheer impact of true guitar change as they did.

He said hit him up when he was in Spokane in the Fall tour of 68..couldn't get near him but..Eire Apparent, Soft Machine, Vanilla Fudge..Jimi playing Little Wing through the Eire Apparent leslie speaker!!! His stage swagger and presence was amazing. Somehow film never seems to capture..

I wasn't at Woodstock but me and a couple of stoner friends went to see some San Francisco bands at a college gymnasium and the opener was this very lean, very cool looking black man. He started playing and we just looked at one another and asked, "Who the hell is that guy? Man, he can play the guitar. He should be famous." About six months later Are You Experienced came out and Jimi Hendrix was famous.

Curious about the timeline. His first album was released in Britain in April and in the USA in August 1967. His first concerts back in the USA seem to be in June 67, Did you see him in Britain or Europe or in the USA? Do you remember which SF bands you saw?
@KD180
@KD180 3 жыл бұрын
@@389383 After reading my comment I wasn't so sure myself. So into the internet I went and sort of straightened out my brain. Hendrix played in the University of Davis gymnasium on 2/8/1968 but Are You Experienced had already been released in 1967. Sacramento was a cowtown and we typically were about 6 months to a year behind everybody and everything so it is very possible I was not aware of the album or I was just really loaded all the time. Soft Machine and The Creators played according to the promoters of the event. I remember Hendrix opening for Vanilla Fudge but that was at the Sacramento Memorial Auditorium in 9/9/1968. I am now trying to find out when Hendrix switched from being the opener to being the main event when touring with Vanilla Fudge. I read that somewhere and I want to see if my brain remembered things correctly. Even if my memories are all mixed up, Hendrix is a legend.

My brother and his mates drove down to Woodstock from Montreal. They arrived early and stayed close to the stage. His friend begged and pleaded with him to stick around until Monday to hear and see Hendrix. My brother had a hardcase boss who was always threatening to sack everyone so he wanted to leave by Sunday early afternoon. He relented--and never regretted his decision to stay. Though they had to wade through mountains of garbage, by that time the highway was open again...and he didn't get fired for missing 1 day of work.

Get DVD of this performance. There is another disk that is in black and white filmed from across the stage at another another angle. You can see the reaction of the kids on stage as he plays the "star spangled banner". The guy who shot the footage was there for the whole performance and got most of it. He showed it to Hendrix afterwards. It's a really great DVD "Hendrix at Woodstock".

The promoters had a cap of $15,000 per musician, Hendrix was payed $30,000 + $2,000 for expense's, Jimi agreed to do 2 brackets, an acoustic bracket then an electric bracket. Jimi was the highest paid musician, plus he was the last to perform because no one would follow his him, which was a shame because thousands of people had left before he came on, those dedicated to see Jimi stayed, (IMO) it was Jimi's best performance.

Its too bad others got their stuff grabbed. I know Chandler ended up ripping Jimi off, but, with all the stuff that's out there & keeps becoming "found" later on, I wish Jimi's sister would just give things a rest & let the music play.

Love called to all music is magic As we passed over the walls of Nay Hand in hand as we lived And made real the dreams of men- We came together... jimi is an american hero that was swallowed by america! All of her hope and dreams! Its all about freedom. Fly on, fly on. The jimi version of star spangled banner should have been played at this time of the year. ALL FREEDOM!
