Here is the story: Jimi came in to the BBC studio for an interview. People had been saying that he was using the guitar as an electric noise maker, and they wanted to see if he could really play. So they set him up. They got a 12 string acoustic, and they strung it left handed, which is pretty rare. Then they set it there, knowing Jimi would pick it up, which he did. Jimi had never played a 12 string before in his life. He started doodling on it, and then he realized that they were filming him. So he stopped, and he played a song that he had written, called Hear My Train Acomin'. A lot of good players watched this, and they said... I can't do that. So it turned out that Jimi was an absolute master of the instrument. He was incredible.

Stringing up a 12-string left handed? That really doesn't work well. The nut and saddle are set up for right-handed stringing. The guitar will be out of tune and hard to play. For most of us....

I agree, the second video, where he isn't stressed out, is the one I prefer. He crushed Hound Dog. And now you know how damn good an acoustic record he could have made.

Jimi grew up the product of a poor dysfunctional family. As a child he got passed around to relatives because his parents often were drunk. And when they got drunk they fought. He would hide in a closet when this happened. Eventually his father ended up with custody of him and his brother. His other siblings went into foster care. In elementary school Jimi became obsessed with the guitar and he used to carry around a broomstick to school pretending it was his guitar. His first instrument was a one string ukulele he found while cleaning out a space with his dad for money. The person who was paying him said he could keep it. That's what he started out on learning how to play.
