지민 (Jimin) 'Set Me Free Pt.2' MV REACTION

I know that I wasn’t necessarily in the best condition to react to this since I am exhausted but I think the MV would have had the exact same effect on me regardless. The implication in the dance, the meaning, the deep and cutting vulnerability took my breath away, gave me chills and kinda rewired my brain a bit even. Because while he is singing about his own experience and life, it resonated with me really deeply and probably many of us. That’s why I said it felt like being fitted in front of a mirror almost. And while I can tell you that I enjoyed the song, I don’t know if I love it at the moment. I guess it’s going to be a multiple step experience for me; like I have to completely digest how this MV made me feel to finally be able to absorb the song if that makes sense. The instrumental was somber, sinister and so it sets the vibes pretty early on which is why I also questioning how often I will be reaching for this song tbh. The multiple layers that this MV offers is amazing and while I might not love the song at this point, I have been completely taken over by the dance and the story it tells: raising from the ashes and freeing yourself from the pit of hell, removing the shackles that kept us down to finally raise to the surface and reach freedom finally. The story was s beautifully presented and that was a piece of art in itself. But the dance wouldn’t have been complete without, the song and Jimin and vice and versa. Which is why I said this was an experience!

Jimin is simply a genius. When he says "I won't stop even if they mock me", you can see the dancers pointing at him, judging him, referring to how people perceive him and the narratives they constantly impose or project on him and him basically saying no matter what you say, I'll keep shining. "Fly away, butterfly Finally free" He is ready to fly. The butterfly lyric mirrored in this effortlessly smooth and sexy move and the fact that he is flanked by two female dancers here just accentuates his appeal. He is lifted up by the throng and here people have noted the parallels to Lie and it is calming to think that Set Me Free Pt 2 resolves and brings closure to the emotions that inspired that song. In an interview Jimin explained: "I tried to express the grand scale of the song and [the ideas of] determination, passion, and overcoming. “Set me free” means setting myself free, so I thought it was important that I be the one to set myself free - not someone else. In the end, I’m the one who has to set myself free. I would say the song has the energy of a light in the darkness. I wanted to express that kind of picture everyone has in their head - a ray of light coming into the darkness is the only thing you can see. If I had to say specific colors, I’d say black and white." Jimin is a true artist in every sense of the word. The birth of the King!

I completely LOVED this production of his song, the choreography was on point, his voice...fantastic!!! The words on his torso are a poem. It's a poem by Rainer Maria Rilke titled "I LIVE MY LIFE IN WIDENING CIRCLES" I live my life in widening circles that reach out across the world. Someone wrote in describing BTS vs kpop that they are not the same. I agree. I could not get interested in kpop before because of the suicides and the clothes the girls wear. Listened to BTS a couple of months ago and liked the dance. Listened to some songs and liked some things said. Figured out who is who and their personalities. I love Jimin’s artistry (bias) and this video. My favorite line is “ GO INSANE TO STAY SANE”. Means to be truly passionate about something in a world full of rejection, pitfalls and naysayers. Jimin’s history with BTS has been filled with haters , death treats, insecurities and self doubt. He is now letting all that go and be free of all of that nonsense. This ties in so much to other verses in the song….mock, fugg the opposition, will make the music he likes moving forward as a soloist. I think his song and dance routine is epic. So proud of Jimin.

SEE?! Even if we don't know dance or technical terms about dancing, jimin and the dance crew and the MV itself made us feel what the message is. You're right about the mirror thing, it's really like that because the lyrics before that move are "in a maze" and in Korean the maze sounds like "miro" = mirror. Also, i think Jimin is talking to himself here. Notice how there are lyrics with quotation marks. And the different type of voices with the help of autotune. He's talking to himself, saying that he must be free, and notice how the heavily auto tuned parts are the one being aggressive excessively while his normal singing voice is him being vulnerable. Jimin himself said in an interview that he wants to be free but it must be him who must free himself. So you getting the impression of being in a mirror is amazing. Jimin also hinted about mirrors during his promo for this song. The spiral can be interpreted as a metamorphosis of a butterfly and jimin dancing inside (it looks like a caterpillar) to the center as if being cocooned and then breaking out to fly away as a butterfly. Others interpret it as visual representation of Jimin spiraling until he breaks away from it. Or in a maze where the path got narrower until he breaks it and made his own escape. SEE HOW THIS MV IS SO AMAZING WITH THE DANCE, but people are so weird for saying it's too simple 😭 just because it isn't visual explosions of aesthetic and colors, it doesn't mean it's not complex.

Jimin is definitely breaking free from the confines of his own mind... his insecurities... .being okay with all sides of him... scene at the end, Jimin being lifted up looked so familiar. It's really reminiscent of John Constantine's "visit" to hell to find out if the twin sister was really there. That scene is truly epic, all those demons trying to pull him back To this day, my favorite movie that I keep watching every few years and still discovering new things. In Jimin's case, it now feels like instead of pulling him down, his demons are lifting him up. What's that saying : if you can't fight your demons, make friends with them? I think that's why he used his full voice in this song, and that's why we are all shocked, we were waiting for Jimin's sweet voice and him told us to go away with full voice and all the haters! He's a man he chooses to be, not one we decide. I'm really glad he slapped many in the face!! I love you jiminshii!!!!
