Jim may know a lot about movies, but does he have any idea of how they came to be? Find out with this week's expert, John Wynn (@funnyasiancomic).

I miss when Jack used to have his own segments like 'Comment World' or 'Now I Do Know About That' bring them back.

@@kingmarx810they stopped doing Patreon a while back. I was subscribed to it, it was worth it for $5/month imho. Wish they’d bring it back! Also, does anyone know what happened with Kelly? I never heard it addressed on the show, she just suddenly stopped being part of IDKAT.. anyone know what happened with her?

1:00:00. One of the biggest reasons for the lack of new music being widely disseminated, is the amalgamation and monopolization of the radio stations. When there were hundreds of independent local radio stations each DJ would champion there own particular favourites, often local bands with a following, or indie musicians from overseas. Rick Beato did an episode called 'How Corruption and Greed Led to the Downfall of Rock Music' I imagine the same is the case with the film industry. When accountants and lawyers are the decision-makers, creativity is the first casualty.

Revisiting this, and being Australian: the opals bit at 10:57. I remembered this episode (plus the Diamond episode where opals are also mentioned as being not a great gem). I just returned home from tutoring one of my 9-yr-old students who showed me a bag of many opals that he'd dug up on holiday. He had a massive school backpack full of opal! He asked if I wanted any and I kindly said "Oh, maybe one, thank you!" (I really didn't want want any opals but I wanted to have one just asa token to remember my student's kind nature. Also, just before Christmas of late year, this little chap was "accepting offers" on misc. bags of 20x LEGO pieces. His mum told me that just 20c or 50c would be very kind *only if I was interested* , and actually I really missed my childhood days of fooling around with LEGO. So I offered my student $2 for two bags, and I said he could choose which bags to give me (dud bags haha). Just think of that: as a 32-yr-old adult, I was willing to hand over a gold coin for cheap-ass plastic LEGO blocks and also truly was interested in them, rather than a bag full of opals!

I love the IDKAT show and the joy of discovery around a topic. John Wynn is spot on with his knowledge. I'm not one to criticize BUT (rant ensues): Yes Australia is credited with the first feature length narrative film. The Soviet Director Sergei Eisenstein is acknowledged as one of the first to produce a theory of montage/editing around 1910. Indonesia and India have way bigger output than 'Hollywood'. French and Italian film industries were devastated after WWII in a trade sanction imposed by the US. Japan cinema had a parallel movie culture that broke animation into an art form... Yeah, USA USA! Another thread of movie history is that Edison owned the patents on the East coast so the creatives took/stole the technology to the West coast and Hollywood was born. Walt Disney, a Nazi sympathizer, prospered by taking any stories he could, make undeniably great animations using under payed artists, and then locking them off from anyone else using copyright laws. Yeah, USA USA! On a happier note the Hollywood infrastructure (access to the tools of trade) allowed the greatness of many remarkable film makers to exist: Terrence Malick, Scorsese, Kathryn Bigelow, Spike Jones, Coppola, Nicholas Ray, John Waters, Tarantino, Melvin Van Peebles et al

Just have to say I was taken with a bout of depression a few weeks ago and someone said "watch some jim jefferies stand up!" It might help so I did and I lmfao especially his story about his m8 Dan and the hooker omg what a brilliant yarn, anyway laughter is often the best medicine as I totally forgot what made me down to begin with. Thanks Jim

Film is still being used; "Oppenheimer", "Poor Things", "Saltburn", "Killers of the Flower Moon", "Asteroid City" and "Maestro" are recent movies that were shot on film instead of digital.

Jim, everybody in the UK in the 70s used to chuck their dogs out in the morning and they'd all meet up with all the neighbours' dogs and roam the housing estate in packs. There was no one to pick up the shit. That changed when the council banned dogs from roaming the streets unaccompanied and dogs had to be chipped so you'd get a fine if yours was found slumming it.

Fun fact: The RKO cinema chain (that made movies like King Kong and Citizen Kane) came from the merger of the RCA, Keith-Albee, and Orpheum groups. You can still see plenty of Orpheum theaters out there today.
