First time hearing Mr. Driftwood...I really enjoyed his voice and songwriting. And that Tenn. stud sounds like a pretty rare horse! I'm guessing he's talking about a champagne Tenn. Walker with green eyes that somehow stayed until adulthood (they usually turn amber). I'll have to check out more of his discography.

I got to know him and his wife very well. They were very nice to me when I was in my teens, even inviting me to stop by and visit them at their home if i could catch them there.

JImmie was a major collector and composer of American historical ballads and folk songs. The tune featured here would be one of his best known compositions and Eddy Arnold brought it to national prominence with his hit version #5 in '59. The 50's and 60's seems to have been fruitful decades for historical ballads within country when one considers the output of legendary artists like Johnny Horton and Marty Robbins. Another excellent review/rating, Don, and keep that country rockin'.

Great discovery Don. This song has been covered many times. My first listen was a cover by Hank Williams Jr. After hearing that version, I searched and heard this version. Loved all of them, wonderful writing. Thanks again Don for sharing your journey with us. Peace.

Thanks for giving a local hero some exposure. Besides teaching high school history for years, he was instrumental in founding the Ozark Folk Center and the first National River (the Buffalo in Arkansas). The strange guitar in the pictures was made by his grandfather from an ox yoke, fence rail and his grandmother’s bed’s headboard. If one of his songs has a date in it, it was probably written to help get the students pay attention to the history lessons.

@T Smith Thanks for the info on Jimmie. One other sidetone is that I was looking through all my laptops and backup drives to find the pix of me in front of Reynolds Stadium at U of A, and I couldn't find them---arghhh!! I'll find them eventually, but that was a bummer!! I wanted to put a couple of the pix in the video I did of Jimmie's since I know the Arkies would love it. When I find them I'll put them in a video or two. WPS!!

I first heard of Jimmy Driftwood about 20 years ago when I was listening to a public radio show every Sunday. He also wrote The Battle of New Orleans. I have a long version of that I recorded off the radio where he tells the story of the battle and the song. I enjoyed this.

The actual ending of this song referred to a BABY playing on the cabin floor, and a "LITTLE HORSE COLT playing 'round the door". So everybody was happy!! Love this song, gonna look for Doc Watson's version & give it a listen too. Thanks!

@Kelly Hudson Thanks, Kelly!! I'm hunkered down in my place just getting work done--nothing is open, no sports on TV, so what else is there to do?!! Making good progressive's on things, which is good for me, so when things open up again I'll be able to enjoy it more since I'm hoping to be ahead of the game. I hope you're well too, and that life is gonna begin to open up for everyone so we can live again. :-)

RockN2Country Good to hear you are staying put. We are hunkered down, too. Taking 2000 ui Vitamin D3 every day, and regularly opening windows to change the air. Soon it will be warm enough to drag out the front porch chairs, so we can enjoy sunshine and fresh ocean air. Lots of reading in the meantime.

Don I’m glad you like it he wrote another pertaining to this song called Big Hoss one part referring to the Tennessee Stud was that Big Hoss was the 99 th son good song also. I think he had a lot of good songs but then he had some that wasn’t that good but that is every musician and everybody has an opinion doesn’t make it good or bad just that person’s opinion. Well glad you like it and you should listen to some more of his songs if you get the chance 👍on the video and your comment

@TotteryFlyer 29 One of the good things about the internet is that the old-time songs are finding ways to get back into the culture. We'll see where things go with traditional country, but even the younger folks are checking it out and some of them are sticking with it. Time will tell. I hope you're doing well with the lockdowns, and that we all get back to some normalcy soon!

As someone else mentioned, he wrote the Johnny Horton hit "The Battle of New Orleans" as well as "Country Music Has Gone To Town," recorded by Johnny & Jack. I think I prefer Johnny Cash's cover version of this song but this longer version is very interesting as well.

@Hunter Youngblood Billy is awesome, but after I did a song of his--pretty sure it was "Little Maggie"--a while back, I received a notice that his people had contacted YoUTube about it. KZbin is notoriously vague when it comes to informing us about how things work behind the scenes, but the one part of the notice they sent me was that if Billy's people ask KZbin to take the video down, I would receive a copyright strike, which is really bad for us KZbinrs. So I took it down myself to avoid the strike, and am now staying away from Billy's songs. If things loosen up down the road I'd love to react to more of his songs. --Don

@@RockN2Country That sucks, i want to write my own music later on down the road. When i do I'll copywright the songs so movies and games can't use them without crediting me or paying a royalty fee, but if its a youtuber reacting to my song that'd be fine. If anything i could get more fans from it, so thats something i never understood. But, i still think its worth checking out in your own time.
